Part 1: • Gary Payton on His Dad...

In the latest clip, Gary Payton acknowledged his legacy as one of the NBA's greatest trash talkers but gave the crown to Hall of Famer Larry Bird. Payton stated that Bird could take trash talk further by telling opposing players what he was going to do on the court and actually deliver on the promise. The legendary point guard claimed Bird is underrated as the three-time league MVP is rarely mentioned in G.O.A.T. conversations. To hear Payton speak on Bird's rivalry with Magic Johnson, check out the above clip.

Fouling was less penalized; so of course players like Bill Laimbeer and Kevin Mchale strived off fouling and very aggressive defense. Uncontested 3 pointers and unguarded far midranges were very common in the 80’s and early 90’s. Teams shot better in that era than they do now because of these defensive blind spots. There’s gives and takes with every era.

Anybody who watched Bird in the 80s knows how good he was..but he is mostly considered a small forward. Most in this current era and many overall would put LeBron and Durant ahead of him at small forward which is why he gets overshadowed sometimes. No different than Oscar Robertson being left out of discussions of all time great shooting guards because of Jordan and Kobe.

People call it trash talking, and maybe it is, but if you tell the opposing team and players what the play is and what you are going to do even before the play starts and then go out and do exactly what you said you would do, has is that trash talking. Bird was so confident in his game that his talking was a way of challenging opponents to try and stop so he could prove how great he was. which he did time after time. Bird was the ultimate competitor. There are more clips of Bird diving for a ball then all of the best players playing today put together. Even in his next to last season with his back in horrible shape, he dove after ball, during the playoffs, smashing his face into the floor. Of course in Bird style, even though he went to the locker room to be checked out, he came back out to help the Celtics win.

Ardonis Williams:. I felt similarly about Bird. I had to get over my own hate of the Celtics, and all the white announcers slurping up Bird. I knew how great Bird was but I could not admit that to myself until a regular season game against the Lakers. The Lakers had the lead with a few seconds left and I was screaming at the tv for the Lakers not to let Bird receive the inbound pass. That right there tells you how much respect I had for Bird. On the inbound play I saw that they were putting Worthy on Bird and I said great. Worthy was quick and it should be hard for Bird to get a shot off on Worthy. My nightmare happened Bird got the inbound pass and I said stop him. You already know the outcome. Bird hit the shot and the Celtics won. I was beside myself angry with Worthy for not stopping Bird. I was so angry I was talking to myself about how Worthy let Bird get that inbound pass and hit that shot. And then it hit me that Worthy wouldn't want Bird to make that shot against him. He did all he could to stop Bird but to no avail. It was at that point where I finally admitted to myself how great a player Bird was. I already knew this but I finally admitted it to myself.

It wasn’t that Jordan had a bad team, it was that he wasn’t a good team player, and that hurt him against Bird who was the ULTIMATE TEAM PLAYER AS WELL AS THE MOST WELL ROUNDED INDIVIDUAL PLAYER OF THAT ERA (I believe ALL eras).
