Part 3: • Gary Payton on Being F...
Part 1: • Gary Payton on His Dad...
--------
In this clip, Gary Payton detailed his high school playing career coming out of Oakland as a virtually unknown prospect before making a name for himself during his junior and senior years. Gary recounted the decision to decommit from Big East basketball powerhouse (at the time), St. John's, in favor of going to Oregon St. who boasted a less storied basketball tradition. He also revealed that while excelling on the court at Oregon St. he had hopes of entering the NBA Draft during his sophomore or junior year but was barred from making the jump to the league until he graduated based on orders from his father.

Yeah man I first heard that long song last year driving in atlanta with my headphones on looking for basketball courts to play on. I’m from buffalo ny and that makes me want some good sunlight no snow and just ride clean. He talked about gary payton good times with many ladies. Dicegame on the pool table too short said. shot out to Vlad for this interview. Learned alot about Gary Payton. Mad respect. Vlad don't interrupt legends. you can tell who Vlad considers legends.
I enjoyed watching Stockton and Payton battle one another in games, Gary gave the ultimate respect to John by saying John was the only point guard he feared, they both have so much respect for each other, they were a couple of the toughest pound for pound players in the league.

Every time he talks I think of KG imitating him 🤣 🗣 “FO UP TWIST!”
No place like the bay area I was born and raised there. Traveled the country and realized the game is thick in the bay and light years ahead
My dad was at skyline then and said the same thing. Scouts were scared to go to games, GP wasn't getting recruited. Crazy
I remember GP played my high school in SF in 1986 and he had this dry ass Jheri Curl and a flat ass shot that had no rotation......GP and Foster were getting a lot of hype in the Bay Area from Skyline.... His boy Greg Foster killed us for like 30-35. Gary got like 15 or so...GP didn't talk all that much during the game......BTW, the guy in question is Boo Harvey that St Johns took over GP....! Big mistake Louie C!!.....When I saw GP at OSU, I knew he was going to turn it out. He just had that "it" factor, but I never expected him to be 2nd pick and HOFer.....Props to him and his great career.

As an Old School New Yorker, I never knew that Lou Carnesecca & the Redman was in the running back then for Gary. I would have fit in great & have great chemistry with that team they had back then, all though Mark Jackson was at the point. NYC would have really embraced G.P. and his style of Basketball.
For St. Johns in the 80's to come west looking for a player. You have to be one exceptional player.
