At least Leo was nominated many times before the Academy finally caved in and let him win for a mediocre job. Oldman wasn't even nominated for a number of brilliant performances for 25 years. He had to take this once-in-a-lifetime risky role and show off his superhuman shape-shifting ability to get his hands on an Oscar, which he won very deservedly. And I'm not talking about the makeup when I say he's a shape-shifter. A true chameleon.

I disagree with one thing you said here. I actually think DiCaprio's win came on time. The Revenant was a great movie, and his performance was so riveting. Yes, a case could've been made for The Wolf of Wall Street, but McConaughey was too good in Dallas Buyers Club.

All I can say is...IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!!!!!!!!!! Gary Oldman is one of the actors who truly disappears inside of a role. I always thought that Redford always played Redford, Newman always played Newman, Hanks has always played Hanks, etc. But Gary Oldman's talent, I felt, had remained unrecognized...until now. Well deserved.

Honestly Oldman should have won before now.... he was great and it was deserved but this wasn't his best performance. Timothee was outstanding and fully deserved his nomination... but I kind of knew he wasn't going to win when you're nominated in the same league as some of those other names. He will unfortunately have to pay his dues first, that seems to be how these things go. I am certain he'll win one some day though.

Note he made great efforts to find alternative sources in the Commonwealth. The Bengal famine was as much a product of WW2 as was the Holocaust. Gary Oldman is easily one of the most talented actors of all time and was certainly long overdue for an Oscar. He has always possessed the courage and determination to fully commit himself to his roles until the man and the character are wholly indistinguishable. With fearless portrayals as varied as Sid Vicious, Prince Dracula, Lee Harvey Oswald, Drexl Spivey, Ludwig van Beethoven, Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg, Mason Verger, Sirius Black, and Jim Gordon, his range appears to be endless. I can think of no other actor from the last thirty years whom I admire more or who is as deserving of praise and reward for being a bona fide master of his craft. Congratulations, Mr. Oldman. You are an inspiration and we love you.

When Gary Oldman portrays a character on film, Gary Oldman is not there - he vanishes and the character is brought to full and vivid life. He is quite simply one of the greatest actors ever.

Finely, justice for Gary Oldman.

Great to finally see him win, but when you look at his body of work, and realize he's only been nominated twice (late) in his entire career is a ridiculous, he's without question one of the most talented actors ever.

I just love that although the society is divided these days we are all in agreement that Gary Oldman is just incredible and we’re collectively happy for him. Well done Gary, you have won the Oscar but also people’s hearts ❤

I will never forget his performance in darkest hour till my last breath. This kind of artists are made once in a blue moon and they never leaves the universe, they continue to be there. Gar Oldman has always been my favorite actor and he is simply greatest of all.

An absolute class act. He should've won a long time ago. One of the all time greats.

No comments on politics, social issues or attempting to push his opinions...nothing. Just his love for film and gratitude for receiving an Oscar. The epitome of class.

The Enygma I don't think anyone who wants to play on that movie. Depending on the story, the plot. Maybe a married couple in crisis...the woman cheats, the man stays at home to raise the children..on his own, trying to make the kids happy and to prevent them from finding out the truth. The man should win the best actor nomination so the host can mention the movie title. Maybe Brad Pitt should be the lead role.

It was so great to see the ultra talented Gary Oldman finally win this well-deserved Best Actor Oscar for his work in "The Darkest Hour." (2017). Such a talented and articulate man.

When someone gets a standing ovation know they are long overdue and respected. Gary Oldman is one of my favourite actors. Bram Stockers Dracula.. Leon... Immortal Beloved... Fifth Element... Tinker Tailor Soldier... Darkest Hour... Any so so many other amazing performances.

Amazing he is such a humble good hearted human yet can play these remarkable larger than life figures and evil villains. He’s such a phenomenal actor.

It was the only win of the night which I cheerished for. Gotta love that guy.

It's interesting that both Oldman and Deakins, who worked together on "Sid and Nancy" very early in their career, won their long-overdue Oscar together after 32 years

I heard him say in an interview that his mother always hoped and said that he would win an Oscar. She held on until he won it and died shortly after.

He should have several of these by now. Such an artist.

I've seen this so many times and it never gets old.

I know it sounds cliche but I think people forget that just being nominated for an Oscar IS an honor in itself. It's not always about who wins.... everyone who was nominated is being recognized for turning in a fantastic performance. Particularly for someone as young as Timothee Chalamet, that is such a huge deal.

This movie and his performance is so damn good. The conversation with people on the subway always makes me cry.

This is how special "The Darkest Hour" It wasnt acting. Gary Oldman was Winston Churchill. If there is anyone who hasnt seen it. You should!!! A magical performance!!

I am shocked that this was just his second nomination, his curriculum is amazing. He should have won many years ago but I'm happy he finally got it, most deserved!

I'm so glad one of the greatest actors of all time finally got his due recognition. Granted, he may have given better performances in other films, but I can't deny that this was a deserving performance in its own right.

So damn well deserved he kills every role he has played.

He is in a tier of actors who never needed awards to show his qualities. The award changes nothing for me. One of my all time favourite actors.

Come on. Oldman should have won an Oscar for every performance he's ever done. From Sid and Nancy to True Romance to Dracula and Romeo is Bleeding( to name a few). He's a true Master of the Art.

The first movie I remember seeing Gary Oldman in was Immortal Beloved, another wonderful example of this brilliant actor’s work.

He should won a Oscar for every performance. He’s phenomenal actor

Living legend. His acting is beyond awe.

His speech is as good as Winston! He finally won this prize after having "Full of blood, toil, tears, and sweat"! This is the finest hour for him, not darket hour. Congratulations, Mr. Oldman!!

and of course I have to add this comment, my favourite actor of all time Daniel Day Lewis is announced his retirement it means he's never been act again and this is his last Oscar ceremony I just want to say thank you thank you thank you for the all great movies and all my deepest respect and love thank you legend!

Cham irving in the 20-30’s kids used to be nominated for best actor but they don’t do that anymore

How can you not love this sweet talented man. It took long enough for him to win however it’s well deserved

this is one of the many oscar moments that had me in tears. gary is one of my favorite actors of all time and getting to see this happen was just amazing. 100% deserved, crossing my fingers gary gets nominated once again for mank!!
