    To your point at the end of the video, Ian Hislop isn't a BBC employee so he can't 'quit the BBC'. There is also a very big difference between the BBC showing the game and him being on a completely different TV with nothing to do with football that happens to be on the same channel and Gary Neville being directly paid by the Qatari government to commentate on the match.

  • @NewsWagg

    @NewsWagg

    He can quit the show, that is being shown on the BBC. If the game is shown on the BBC then those on the BBC are making money from it. In the same way if a country hung people and a TV station showed the films, they are still profiting off the hangings This is the point, it is a case of I am old right jack, but your in the wrong. I am correct in what I do, but others are not. Everyone is a hypocrite. I am not as I hate football.

    @NewsWagg the BBC doesn't make directly via broadcasting and nor do they make a profit. They are a public service broadcaster funded by a TV licence. Ian Hislop is paid by this licence fee, and HIGNFY is also funded by this licence. Being paid by the BBC to host a completely unrelated programme to the WC is not in any way comparable to being paid vast sums of money directly by the Qatari government. It's bad faith arguing to attempt to draw an equivalence between the two when none exists.

  • @bletheringfool

    @@NewsWagg the point of HIGNFY being made by and independent production company is to have editorial independence from the broadcaster. Yeah it is a grey area for sure but Hislop didn't take cash directly from them (Qatar) so that, I guess is what his argument would be.

    @@PlatformNo14 during the apartheid, when the US came out in condemnation towards the South African government, many African American employees of various federal agencies quit in a move praised by various civil right organisations. The mini exodus of African American employees of the federal government was down to the fact that the US had condemned South Africa but had yet to take any economic action against them and continued doing business with them as if it was still the 50s. Now if these African American employees could see the principle in not working for an organisation that still did business with supposed evil, even if they did not receive any actual profit from south Africa as individual employees, then so could Ian Hislop. And therefore, no, It isn't a bad faith argument to expect such principled behaviour from Ian Hislop, especially when he expects principled behaviour from everyone around him. So get off your high horse.

    I disagree with you there. It's hypocritical for Neville to complain about a country while still making money from them. It's not hypocrtical for Hislop to complain about Qatar while making no money from them. The BBC makes its money from license fees, not viewing figures, and they won't make any money from Qater. I turned it down for ethical reasons, the head-hunting agency explained but you're not doing anything religious, you are just looking after their infrastructure and rolling out new software. Me, the more I learned just how filthy rich they are when they are meant to be a religion makes me angrier and I will not assist them, I am sorry. Now the thing is, I'm no one special, they got someone else to take the roll. Many nations with awful human rights records have hosted the world cup - Russia 2018? The colonising nations of the West really don't have much authority to boycott other nations for not enjoying the bourgeois liberalism our ill-gotten wealth has afforded us. The Qatari Kafala (worker sponsorship) system has its roots in the movement of workers between colonies by the British Empire. Islamic nations were some of the world's most tolerant of LGBTQ rights prior to european colonization. Islamic homophobia has its roots in anti-colonial struggles which pushed Islam to become more fundamentalist and reject liberal values which were imposed upon them externally. The same thing has happened in Christian African nations. The unique response to Qatar's hosting of the World Cup stinks of racism as this the most peripheral nation to ever host it.

    I mean regardless of gay rights, i think if a country has its laws and beliefs, than you have to respect them. They have a modesty policy regardless of whether youre gay or straight. Straight people have to abide by them also. Its not about you being gay, its about you flaunting your rights around, their own citizens dont have them rights. If you dont agree with their policies and laws thats fine. Protest it all you want in your country where you have them rights. But dont moan about 'not being able to go there' because they wont accept you for who they are. They have a zero tolerance to sexual behaviour regardless. And protesting your sexual identity is going against that. Thats it unfortunatly. Personally im straight and im ok woth gay people when they act like normal citizens. But people being openly sexual in public makes me uncomfortable, and being straight im not comfortable watching gay activity, kissing is one thing, but the media have taken it wayyy to far and are making everything more and more explicit and i think explicit straight scenes in films are awkward. But they can turn me on at times, gay scenes are in everything i watch now and there was never that much straight sex, or to them extremes in movies. Now its in every movoe and is irritating me. I dont have a problem with gay people at all, i have a problem with those who push it on me as their identity and make it as known as possible. I dont always make my sexuality apparent in my actions. I live my life and theres much more to it then my identity, and its uncomfortable when people whatever their sexuality push it on me constantly. Thats it, its not really about sexuality, its abkut respecting other peoples beliefs and personal lives, and forcing your way of life on others is not respectful, the same we us pushing ours on yours isnt. Live your life and dont worry about what others do and think. If you was straight youd hate qatar because youd want to be able to hold your wifes hand, we dont protest it though.

    “I think is a country has its laws and beliefs you have to respect them”. If they are actively discriminating against you and murdering you because of what you are, why would you? You also go on a lot about it being do with with doing stuff in public when that doesn’t really have any correlation. The law about public affection and being homosexual are two separate things. Even if you’re engaging in homosexual activity in private it’s illegal and punishable by death. Which again, why would you be okay with or respect that? “I’m okay with gay people as long as they act like normal citizens” Them being gay has nothing to do with how they act as a person, being gay isn’t a personality type. Unless you’re saying them engaging in gay activity isn’t “normal” in which case that’s just flat out homophobic. No one needs to know you get turned on by sex scenes in movies. Don’t know why you’ve mentioned that, that’s just a weird thing to publicly say and has literally zero correlation to the topic which is about Qatar. “Gay scenes are in everything I watch now”. If that’s the case then that’s solely your own fault as you’re specifically choosing to watch things with them in. Gay scenes aren’t in every tv show/movie/series and if you think they are then you’re just simply wrong. “There was never this much straight sex in movies”. Again just not true, there is absolutely no way there’s more gay sex scenes in media than straight sex scenes, there just isn’t. “That’s it, it’s about respecting other people’s beliefs and personal lives”. Unless your personal life involves being gay in which case we’ll imprison you and sentence you to death. How respectful ay? “Forcing your way of life on others is not respectful”. Just like how they’re forcing their way of life on gay people? “If you was straight you’d hate Qatar because you’d want to hold your wife’s hand, we don’t protest it though”. Don’t know what rock you’re living under because there were protests about it during the build up to the World Cup, so much so that the police were told to be more relaxed about public displays of affection during the duration of the tournament.

    It seems that Ian and the rest are very concerned about gay rights when there is a host on the show who is getting paid by a government that has anti gay laws and culture, but I don't hear about any of them doing anything outside of this to support that agenda, did I miss something.

    Let's be honest here folks. Gary Neville is one of the top pundits/commentators in the game right now. Millions of people (myself included) have been tuning into the Qatar World Cup and we want the best commentators/pundits available. Fairly simple. If Gary doesn't go, then it's someone worse and he's also been quite vocal about how corrupt Qatar has been.

    Take that logic further. Who are we to tell other people how to behave in their own land? With that in mind, is it right for a theocratic dictatorship to criminalise and demonise people for being gay? If you think the answer to that is no, should we then not stand in support of gay people in Qatar and speak out for the Qatar government to end their discrimination?
