Gary Lewis & The Playboys Albums Episode 2- A Session with Gary Lewis & The Playboys (1965)

Музыка

Count me in through thick and thin or count me out!
Wasn't sure my raspy, sick person voice would hold up for this one but I think it turned out ok!
Today we look at the 2nd LP from Gary Lewis & The Playboys- released in August 1965, "A Session with..."
A couple originals (including a major hit and a much-remembered B-side) and a collection of interesting covers (that try their best to mimic the originals), this 2nd LP doesn't break too much new ground but remains an interesting listen. Not to mention, it became the highest charting "new" studio album of their whole career.
What do you think of this one? Should we count you in or are you saving your heart for a later album in their catalog?

"Family Jewels" was a Jerry Lewis comedy film and about eight minutes into the film, Jerry Lewis (as the chauffeur) sits down to listen to a phonograph record. It's his son's band's (Gary Lewis & The Playboys) biggest hit, "This Diamond Ring." But Gary and the band do not appear in the movie. However, they may have planned on including them originally. Hope you include in the future, "Do The Flake" I got my record from Kelloggs. Here's a good video includes the musicians contract. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pGGWvNORZqa-kag.html

Very cool video! I don't think Doin' the Flake ever appeared on one of their studio albums (nor did their early instrumentals or I Don't Wanna Say Goodnight.) so I'll have to mention that in the next episode. Thanks for the heads-up about "The Family Jewels" as well. You've been a huge help as I work on this series!

How did he get to record a song that had already been released? (This Diamond Ring) someone must have believed in it because it wasn't a big hit by Sammy Ambrose. Which songs on his LPs contained ONLY the original Playboys?

I can't say for certain. There is quite a bit of debate about who played on what and the whole album seems to be a mix of Playboys and sessions musicians that varies song by song. The amount of Playboy personnel turnover in 1965 doesn't help matters either. I know Gary Lewis recorded his version after Ambrose did but I think they released around the same time. The two recordings are quite a bit different, and it seems people preferred Lewis' upbeat one to Ambrose's melancholy one.
