I was there that day sitting in turn one. I'll always remember the screams of the fans there when his helmut went flying through the air. Incredible that he wasn't killed.

He didn't have the strap tight on the helmet. It does look gruesome though.....

One of the most violent flips I've ever seen in sprint car racing. Now I know why the drivers say it's not the flips that get you, but that sudden stop towards the end of it. That was brutal.

I was in the infield and watched this flip. When I saw the helmet come off I thought it was the end of Gary Gray. I had my 11 car there with Bill Burks driving. We missed the feature, but we did get a bunch of free fuel.

Haha! Wow, that is a nice catch. Would've figured it was a piece of the car bouncing down the track, but it sure looks like a little creature running for his life.

That mouse lived in a hole at the inside of turn2 Eldora for 3 months in 1981. After this incident the hole was filled in and we lost touch with the mouse.

@charlesintestine You release hands from the wheel to prevent hand and wrist/forearm breakage......in a sprint car (and during this period too) the drivers have arms restraints that help keep the arms from flying outside of the car during a flip due to G forces or if the driver becomes unconscious..........they don't always work perfectly but before using them arms were crushed in accidents like this....

lol rrrrrrrrround and rrrrrrrrround! Wow, hard bastard the driver is, suprised he didn't get a fatal baseular neck injury, must have been a hard contact for a full face to come off near vertically! Says to me how much force was exerted after he had his face crunched off the dash before being thrown back into his seat.
