Gary Cooper - The Virginian

Ойын-сауық

Scene from Victor Fleming's The Virginian (1929), starring Gary Cooper as The Virginian and Walter Huston as Trampas. Based on Owen Wister's novel and play, this is Gary Cooper's first all-talkie film and a hugely influential Western which put in place the themes, characters, plot and visuals that Westerns would follow for the next 40 years. This scene also contains the famous exchange between The Virginian and Trampas:
Trampas: ...You long-legged son of a...

The Virginian: If you wanna call me that... smile.
Trampas: With a gun against my belly I... I always smile.

It's pretty cool seeing Gary Cooper as a young man. Most of his iconic films like 'Sergeant York' and 'High Noon' came later in his career, so I'm used to seeing a much more aged version of him.

One of the most famous lines in cinema history -- "You wanna call me that, smile!" ... The first of 2 times in Coop's film career, he spoke in a Southern drawl. Randolph Scott was hired specifically as dialogue coach for Cooper's Southern accent. Scott was Virginian by birth though raised in North Carolina.

It was good for the very first movie to have sound outside a stage, and the Sierra Railway had the honor of putting their engine #3 in that movie.

Randolph Scott was hired to help with his Southern accent. I have this movie and love watching it. Coop was a great actor I enjoy all his movies ( Yep). Nothing on TV anymore, if it wasn't for Grit I would be completely out of luck.

This movie could be colorized it is owned by universal pictures either that or it's in the library of Congress but this Western deserves to be colorized because it is special is the true beginning of the West and western movies in the sound ERA this was a big hit movie in the sound, I have a tendency to show the Joel McCrea version in color made in 1946 it is a very bland version of The Virginian which is more Superior the 1929 version the 1946 version has a fine cast the 1929 version has an excellent cast also it is Walter Houston's villain and Gary Cooper's hero that make the difference Mary Brian is innocence all over it should be colorized so there can be shown like the second version which is not as good as the original this movie is the beginning of the sound Western hopefully someone will find a way to colorize it and maybe a station like GRIT will give it a network premiere in color they have a tendency to get too close to the modern era of westerns I prefer the westerns from the 30s 40s 50s and 60s I believe this is movie is of historical significance and many don't get to see it maybe will colorize it and show it a fan of the 1929 Virginian! It did influence high noon!

@92af, a great actor? Nooooo, he wasn't. You should show some respect, mate. Coop was just THE actor! Perhaps the best male actor ever, believe you me... Cheers!

thestick52 No less than John Barrymore and Akim Tamiroff were HUGELY impresses with Coop's naturalistic style of acting. Tamiroff was a doubter until he saw the rushes and the way that Cooper dominated every scene he was in. Likewise director Sam Wood was initially unimpressed with Cooper on the set and while filming until he saw the rushes and the nuances of Cooper's facial expressions. Cooper himself thought he, like in his Lou Gehrig role in THE PRIDE OF THE YANKEES, was just "the luckiest man on the face of the earth" to even be in motion pictures, let alone one of the most popular leading men in all cinema.

Current news for someone who don't think he is Charles Laughton, John Barrymore senior said he was a natural you don't have to be Lawrence Olivier to give a fine performance Gary Cooper did this many times and a lot more than sir Laurence Olivier

That was probably way too much leg the girl was showing ( for 1929 standards). Glad to see that this filmed survived, a lot of films from that era are gone.

KRK, actually the film industry didn't adopted the Code until 1933 and even films released in '34 had glaring vestiges of the pre-Code era; so the long and short of it is, actually scenes such as at the beginning of this video that have caught your rapt attention (and MINE! ;-) ) were quite common in early talkies.
