I played that guitar before Busey bought it from Sotheby’s for $230,000 while I curated the Hard Rock Cafe collection. When I played Not Fade Away on it everyone nearby got goosebumps. It gave me the chills! I’ve played a lot of famous guitars and this one had more mojo than all the others put together.

And over and over and over. In the early 90s when this aired, 1978 was 6,000 years before time. Nobody knew about the Buddy Holly movie, and fewer people gave a shit about it, but Gary was nominated and he milked the shit out of it till he's on Arsenio unable to remember the lyrics to a basic song. Coke, coke, coke, motorcycle accident, etc. Point Break is awesome and Jake was in the sequel to Groundhog Day, S.F.W..

As an audio guy, I have to say that this was fantastically mic'd! Clear conversational voice, but that hambone sound and the guitar too? Whoever was working the sound production on Arsenio was a master of the craft. Just a fantastic interview. 2 cool dudes kicking it.

Did you see how many great performances on there he had? Some of the best in the 80s my hero Stevie Ray Vaughan was on there and tore it up, he was always loud so much bet they had a hard time with him, but sounds crazy good

If I remember correctly, Gary got in a motorcycle accident and hit his head pretty hard at some point early on. One of my favorite actors/human being. Seriously, if I had to pick a person to represent humanity to some alien delegation... I would quite possibly pick Busey.

I was in grade school when I saw him in The Buddy Holly Story. That was 45 years ago but I still vividly recall the roller rink scene and Ollie Vie. They say he insisted on doing the music live, and it's very clear from what we see here, that he had the chops to do it.

For all the people worried about the broken string: Strings are replaced FREQUENTLY on a guitar. The older they are the worse they sound. So no big deal breaking one. I guarantee those are not the strings that were on the guitar when Holly was plunkin' on it.

At first I didn't think that Gary Busey was the best choice to play Buddy, but after seeing him in the movie I couldn't see anyone doing him better. A truly great performance. I had the same opinion when I saw Kurt Russell playing Elvis in John Carpenter's biopic, "Elvis." But I learned that if you're a good actor you can play anyone.

My friend told me about Gary and Rick Danko coming over to party with him at his apartment in North Beach, S.F. a few times. I was living in Wash. State those years he had celebrities around. He was also Janis Joplin's road manager before I knew him. He was in her book. He said the guys would play music and get high together. RIP to my friend Kenneth.

And over and over and over. In the early 90s when this aired, 1978 was 6,000 years before time. Nobody knew about the Buddy Holly movie, and fewer people gave a shit about it, but Gary was nominated and he milked the shit out of it till he's on Arsenio unable to remember the lyrics to a basic song. Coke, coke, coke, motorcycle accident, etc. Point Break is awesome and Jake was in the sequel to Groundhog Day, S.F.W..
I met him at a NYE party once and not only was he the nicest celeb i've ever met, there were about 25 people at the party and he remember every single person's name the whole night.

I saw a compilation of his sharing on tiktoc...lol...no way I'm going near tt..but...it was all inspiring AF motivational and heartwarming..he's mad as but in a good way😍
Gary's talented as hell. Hats off. He can play that guitar and sing really well.
As an audio guy, I have to say that this was fantastically mic'd! Clear conversational voice, but that hambone sound and the guitar too? Whoever was working the sound production on Arsenio was a master of the craft. Just a fantastic interview. 2 cool dudes kicking it.

Did you see how many great performances on there he had? Some of the best in the 80s my hero Stevie Ray Vaughan was on there and tore it up, he was always loud so much bet they had a hard time with him, but sounds crazy good

I hear you but his performance in that movie sits him firmly in Buddys legacy, especially as there's such little footage of Holly, awards fade and crumble but his place is assured forever, time will honour Busey far more than any panel of Hollyweirdos

I so appreciate how he simply, humbly (?) and honestly admits he was wrong. Plus what a performer !!

Gary busey played a great buddy Holly, always watch out for when the buddy Holly story comes on, could watch and re-watch it over and over... Keep performing.
Gary Busey was nominated and up against Sir Lawrence Olivier, Jon Voight, Warren Beatty, and Robert de Niro for the Oscar for Best Male Actor in a lead role for the Buddy Holly Story. What a wonderful honour. What a great actor.

If I remember correctly, Gary got in a motorcycle accident and hit his head pretty hard at some point early on. One of my favorite actors/human being. Seriously, if I had to pick a person to represent humanity to some alien delegation... I would quite possibly pick Busey.

Busey was still mangling the lyrics after the film's completion.
He absolutely crushed that role. I think it's one of the best rock n roll docu/dramas ever made. It was authentic, Busey freakin channeled Holly. This and Big Wednesday are 2 of my favorites. RLTW 3/75

Busey was a true multi talented guy who got busted up in that accident and was never the same both physically and mentally....
You can never look away while Busey is on stage. Whatever happens, it’ll be entertaining. It’s really cool to see the genuine love he has for Holly.

I was in grade school when I saw him in The Buddy Holly Story. That was 45 years ago but I still vividly recall the roller rink scene and Ollie Vie. They say he insisted on doing the music live, and it's very clear from what we see here, that he had the chops to do it.

For all the people worried about the broken string: Strings are replaced FREQUENTLY on a guitar. The older they are the worse they sound. So no big deal breaking one. I guarantee those are not the strings that were on the guitar when Holly was plunkin' on it.

At first I didn't think that Gary Busey was the best choice to play Buddy, but after seeing him in the movie I couldn't see anyone doing him better. A truly great performance. I had the same opinion when I saw Kurt Russell playing Elvis in John Carpenter's biopic, "Elvis." But I learned that if you're a good actor you can play anyone.
Mr busey is an underrated performer this guy has more talent than half of Hollywood

My friend told me about Gary and Rick Danko coming over to party with him at his apartment in North Beach, S.F. a few times. I was living in Wash. State those years he had celebrities around. He was also Janis Joplin's road manager before I knew him. He was in her book. He said the guys would play music and get high together. RIP to my friend Kenneth.
