In grateful memory to Gary Brooker (1945 - 2022)

12 Nov. 1980

Originally released on Procol’s third album with the same mame (1969).
Eberhard Schoener (who had toured with Procol Harum, his Munich Chamber Opera Orchestra and the Toelzer Boys Choir in Germany, Austria and Switzerland 1972) invited Gary for his first CLASSICAL ROCK NIGHT in Munich. The mammooth concert was transmitted on TV in 16 countries, full length, six hours. Other guests were Mike Batt, Esther Ofarim, Andy Mackay, Mel Collins, Jon Anderson, Darryl Way.
There has never been a retransmission of this event and private VHS recorders at that time were rare! So this may be the only surviving tape
of that very night !!
(thank you Fritz for providing this ultra rare material)

2024: Fifty-five years later, from the original release and forty-for from this concert. This song still holds up! I don't know the inspiration, but I always thought of the Mutiny On The Bounty. The "your witness my old man" makes me think of the trial afterwards. Regardless, it is one of my favorite songs and brings back many memories! Thanks to my sisters for this! ❤👍❤👍🔥🔥

Followed Procol from age of 11yrs when their other masterpiece ‘A whiter shade of pale’ was no 1 for 6 weeks in UK. PH became a backbone in my life as an abused child/teen. Gary especially was friendly backstage, and was happy to sign pics or scraps of paper. And talk to fans, amazing musician. As was BJ Wilson their very gifted drummer/percussionist. Salty Dog is my fav album but theyve written so many great songs.

This is magnificent . Procol Harum is the most underrated rock group in the history of rock.possibly because it did not appeal to the masses

Thank you for this material! PROCOL HARUM were often called a "one-hit-Wonder". Did nobody realize they weren't trying to be "middle of the road"? Their music is far too complex and too different to be listened to while doing anything else. Songs like "Lilly the Pink" were hits - for Gary's songs you had to dive a lot deeper under the surface. Van Gogh was a true originator in paining, despite he sold little. Only long after his death, his paintings found recognition - only to stand in dark treasure rooms now. Art and money; passion and success... So I ask: are sales numbers and the Charts the most relevant valuations for good music? Gary's songs will remain a lot longer among the people who appreciate them, than so many "one-week-hits". R.I.P. Gary and B.J. - and thx for all those songs!

This is really awesome. If it's possible, can you show more songs from the Edmonton concert, from 1992? May BJ Wilson and Gary Brooker rest in peace. Cheers! ✌️
