Garth Brooks performs the Grammy Award Winning “Midnight Train to Georgia,” as a tribute to 2022 Honoree Gladys Knight, who first recorded and released the song in 1973.
The Kennedy Center Honors is an annual honor given to those in the performing arts for their lifetime of contributions to American culture.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is proud to celebrate the 45th Honorees for lifetime artistic achievements: acclaimed actor and filmmaker George Clooney; contemporary Christian and pop singer-songwriter Amy Grant; legendary singer of soul, Gospel, R&B, and pop Gladys Knight; Cuban-born American composer, conductor, and educator Tania León; and iconic Irish rock band U2, comprised of band members Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr.
The event took place Sunday, December 4th, 2022, in the Kennedy Center Opera House, was televised Wednesday, December 28th at 8/7c on CBS, and is streaming on Paramount.

He's always been country, rock, and RnB -- and never afraid to mix them.
Kudos to the bass player for bringing a LOT of the original wonderful countermelody played by Bob Babbitt. And for the arranger and production crew that kept it nicely on top of the mix where it belongs. It really is one of the things that makes this song great.
Two things: (1) Gotta hand it to Garth, the man is just awesome. That’s the way you honor someone for their art and (2) the REACH of SOUL MUSIC.

The song was initially written for country genre and called Midnight Plane to Houston. But then the label thought Cissy Houston would do great, changed the title and also get Gladys to do her own rendition

I think it's good to have singers from different genres to do a tribute or just simply cover a classic from another genre. The history has proved it is totally wrong to stay "original" and it is good to bring a bunch of audience in one genre to appreciate another genre. Though of course it sounds pretty different for a country artist to do an R&B classic, the difference makes the world. Beyoncé's Irreplaceable was adapted from a country record, and Linda Ronstadt's You're No Good was an R&B song by Dee Dee Warwick. They sound great.
