I don’t know why I bother with anyone else's tutorials! Stephen shows what is important and what you can fudge! It will all work and look beautiful.

Thanks for this great tutorial! The explicit directions about which strands are easiest to pick up - and the advice that it doesn’t matter which strands you use on the cast-on edge - are especially helpful.

Loved this tutorial! I appreciate how it shows you not only how to pick up stitches, but how to actually apply this technique in order to create the garter tab. I'm a first time shawl knitter so the "pick up 3 stitches from side edge, pick up 3 sts from cast on edge" had me scratching my head and frogging a billion times. But this tutorial makes it super clear. Thank you! PS. I'm not knitting a Westknits shawl, but once I have my shawl knitting-chops down, I'm sure I will! 🙂

I love to watch male knitters and crocheters. My Dad could do both. He taught me more than my mother did!!!❤❤❤

Uhm ... Mary Cassett, Camille Claudel, Berthe Morisot, & don't forget Sofonisba Anguissola, Artemisia Gentileschi ... a small handful of "greatest hits". Also, numerous historical tapestries & fiberworks were constructed entirely by unknown female artisans. History is often written by whoever is in power but, artistic endeavour has a particular staying power. Art bides it's time until rediscovery.

Thank you for simplifying this method. I have watched numerous videos and have gotten an in-person demo at a yarn shop but always felt insecure about the garter tab cast on. After watching this, it became crystal clear and almost obvious. You cut right to the heart of the matter and for that I thank you. I am now free to start on one of your shawls. 😉🧶

So glad it helped! I use these stitch and row counts often. Some of my shawls have 5 or 7 stitches, but the concept of where you pick up is the same.

I'm just starting the Bella Botanical shawl in KP Shadow lace yarn- that with size 3 metal needles and arthritic hands doesn't make for alot of fun when the yarn keeps wanting to fly off the needles 🙄, but I'm so glad I found your video as this is the cast on their calling for, it gets confusing when they want you to knit the sides! Thank you, you do beautiful work and I'm going to subscribe- greetings from NYC!! 🤗💐💜🌹💚 I must say when I just clicked on your channel profile and saw your name, I said- "wait a minute- that's the guy who has all those insane shawls all over Ravelry!!- I'm definitely subscribing!! 😆😆😆

Love it. I was knitting a shawl that didn’t use a garter tab start. It had this funky “V”. And I frogged it and went to you garter tab from your slumber shawl and changed it up. The garter tab can’t be beat. Ur the best West! Thanks for the quick tutorial.
