Garmin Zumo XT Motorcycle GPS In Detail

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Garmin Zumo XT is a GPS or SatNav designed specifically for motorcycles. In this video I'll go over the physical details of the unit up close--the mount, the cord, the memory card slot, etc. And, I'll go through the menu system on screen to show some of the commonly used features and controls. I like to be able to see gear up close and personal before I buy it, so hopefully this will help out others looking to do the same thing. I'll have additional video showing how to install the Zumo on your bike.

Good explanations into the menus. GPS units are still relavent, when we are out in the boonies with no cell-towers around. I like how this unit integrates with my android-phone and Cardo. They seem to play nicely.

Yeah, I have been in a few places in the US where cell service does not exist, even in New Jersey. Out west I've ridden stretches for countless miles where there is no service, but the GPS does just fine.

The unit comes with small screws and a screwdriver. One of these is used to secure the charging cable in the mount.

I appreciate this clear and concise review. I’ve been using my phone with gps apps for creating, following and sharing tracks but my new phone’s camera doesn’t like motorcycle vibration so I can no longer mount it. The only thing I need to figure out before I purchase this is if there is a lockable mount so no one walks off with it. I don’t want to remove it every time I leave the bike.

Touratech makes a lockable mount, but it is quite expensive. Another option might be simply a cover to put over the unit to hide it and make stealing it take a little bit longer.

@@tinderboxarts I found that locking mount after I commented here. It is quite spendy. Lucky for me it’s out of stock 😂

Very good and there is so much more to learn. I’m trying to learn each of the navigation programs that comes with it and decide which is applicable to my style of riding. I ride an adventure motorcycle 50/50 road and forest service type dirt roads. I need some detail both ways.

Nav Sat if you are in the UK??? I think you mean Sat Nav which is short for Satellite navigation but we also call them GPS

Did I reverse that? Both terms do exist, actually, though the slang term is sat-nav. The Navy had a NAVSAT years ago, and it is referenced that way in other places: ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract/document/5005295

Thanks for the info. Im definitely considering this unit for my trip to the dragon in the spring. Was gonna just use my phone, but being in the mountians I kinda want something that wont lose a signal in case y downloaded maps on my phone cant handle a detour or something..I also plan on taking a map, but we'll see. Curious about your install vid when its loaded as well

Yes, many people use their phones, but you are right about signal strength. A GPS is more reliable in that regard. And, this unit is built for the weather and to be bumped around. The install video is coming, but I've had some delays. Soon!

John, I was concerned about the mount too, but I have had my Zumo XT for over 18 mos and used it for over 15K miles and no issues with mount coming loose or accidentally unlocking it.

Do you have any tips on optimizing adventurous routing om the garmin? Even on the most extreme settings the roads are still mostly boring N roads, I had a tomtom rider 550 before. The garmin zumo xt doesn't even come close to choosing its own interesting road over the tomtom. I am disappointed.

I haven't had a chance to play with that yet, although I have a cross country trip this year that I'm planning. However, I suspect part of the answer may be WHERE you are riding. In other words, the map data may be more accurate or thorough in some areas of the country over others, which may influence the adventurous routing feature. I also wonder, though I have not yet tried, if making other selections such as "avoid highways" will influence the adventurous routing feature. It's winter in my area and I'm not doing much riding right now, but hopefully in the spring I can do some experimenting with this unit.

There's really no comparison between those two units for motorcycles. The Zumo XT is designed for bikes and has features tailored to riders. There is also a new version of the XT just out with an even bigger screen.

If you are running a programmed route, then you can. Here's how: Viewing Turns and Directions While navigating a route, you can view upcoming turns, lane changes, or other directions for your route. From the map, select an option: To view upcoming turns and directions as you navigate, select Menu > Turns. The map tool displays the next several turns or directions beside the map. The list updates automatically as you navigate the route. To view the complete list of turns and directions for the entire route, select the text bar at the top of the map. Select a turn or direction (optional). Detailed information appears. An image of the junction may appear for junctions on major roadways, if available.

You can play music from files on the Zumo itself or from bluetooth audio on your phone. I suppose any bluetooth device that looks like a phone would also work, but I haven't played around with that.
