    Nice one, bud! I bought my V3 dual a month ago, thankfully these were the 'revised' model door, updated firmware. Worked great, usual bedding in, offset, etc.. all good.. That is until i replaced the batteries. Like you, rabbit hole ensued. Power spikes and drop outs all the time. Infrequent and sporadic drop outs between different platforms. Loads of support tickets. Really, checked batteries, ensured the doors weren't too tight. Still dropped out. Removal of all wifi and BT interferance (as much as I could) - no joy. Started to really dig into the forums from past V3 - surely, it's not the same problem?!! Battery doors are the updated version, firmware updated... Let's check the LR44 batteries - little black spot on them!! Oil applied as per advice. No issues since. I wonder, and these are ebay batteries (albeit duracell), that inferior batteries are susceptible to fretting. A few of the folk in Garmin forums have really geeked out, measuring current etc and identified the CR1/3N as being a compatible and superior battery. 1- one singular battery that's not shaking around encouraging fretting and 2 - Lithium. I don't claim to know a thing about this, but the issue regarding fretting as been resolved. Word to the wise, even the updated pedals are prone to drop outs without the precautions. Finally, thanks for the comparison. I tried in vain to compare the Neo with V3 and even used Ray's analysis - nope, couldn't get it right. But more recently, i'm seeing almost like for like on Neo - Trainerroad and Garmin on Bolt or zwift. Your tests have validated it, mate. A huge thank you bud! Next step is to get Zwift to offer power meter calibration/off set, in session. I've put a Zwift feature request on the forum - please all, vote for it :)

    Wish I had the same luck after the battery door upgrade, dropouts etc for two new sets of LR44s after an initial perfect period (~50hrs post door upgrade). So, I took online advice and placed a sliver of cork under the positive contact and oiled each battery face on fitting. I also had to replace the fragile yellow o-ring as it broke in the process. As Shane says "Happy Dayz" now. I only have the 3S, and when working are a good tool, however I've never had a cycling accessory cause me so much angst and frustration. I can only imagine how life has been for many a dual Vector 3 customer. Garmin needs to lift its game, really the marketing guys had this out too soon before I'm sure the engineers were ready!

    This video has great timing. I sent my original Vector 3 Pedals back to Garmin a month ago because there was separation at the spindle, along with power spikes and drop outs, even with new battery doors and all bulletins applied. They sent me a new pair and it was fine for about 30 hours ... then same thing AGAIN. Power spikes and dropouts are back on this new pair. Sounds like I really need to apply baby oil to batteries, use cork, or something else to make a $1,000 product work. Damn.

    Hi Shane. Love your videos! They've helped me make some great purchasing decisions! Do you think the "stiffness" (ie the pedals don't spin freely) in the Vector 3 adversely impacts/degrades pedaling power output? Seems to me it's a point of unwanted friction - or is a part of how the power meter is supposed to work? Thank you.

  • @gplama

    @gplama

    4 жыл бұрын

    Garmin have been quoted (somewhere, I can't recall where) that it costs a watt or so on each pedal.... so yeah, it's friction that costs energy. It's due to their waterproofing. They might free up a little more after a few 1000km

    Thanks Shane. I've watched this a few times. But having broken my pedal second pod on my original Vectors I think I'm going to replace with either these or the Assioma Uno. (fortunately after extensive use of the Wattbike I am lucky enough to have 50-50 power even when fatigued) These get such a bad rep - but you and Ray seem happy now after the false start. And in the UK they are £389 v £449 for the Assioma's. So I guess I'd love your view on the two and whether I'm mad to have ordered a pair of the V3 based on the pricing and the fact they seem to have sorted the issues. Thanks in advance.

    Shane Miller - GPLama so the conclusion for all your tests is after a hard effort the Vector might need recalibration? what about the power differences in ERG mode when the cadence varies? do you still seeing this issue?

  • @benclark2322
    @benclark23225 жыл бұрын

    Have you heard of other units reporting this bedding in process? The beauty of your process is that you're seeing the issue live and can re-zero where I suspect average Joe wouldn't have such a regime and would most likely bed in and account for it in pre ride calibration regime. I'll be interested to see if after a period of use whether the seperation reoccurs if if it's now been addressed.

  • @gplama

    @gplama

    5 жыл бұрын

    In theory all systems will have a small amount of bedding in. Spiders/Chainrings. Pedals/bearings/tightness. The average Joe is up shit creek to be honest. They have to trust in what they're seeing. I'd never rely on a power meter that hasn't been tested against a known/good source.

    I've had two pairs of Garmin Vector 3 (left and right power meters). I've tried all the service bulletins, including adding baby oil to the battery contacts every time I change them ... I can't make this up. Garmin has warranty replaced the battery doors, and again, the entire pedal set with the newer version. Still, the power drop outs/disconnects continue. It seems this is a design defect where the batteries still jiggle inside the pedal and causes power disconnects, especially from the right-to-left pedal Bluetooth bridge. You can solve this by permanently disabling the right pedal and use the left one on ANT+ only, but then you just paid $999 for a very heavy paperweight. Garmin refused to give me a refund, even after the second pair of warranty pedals kept disconnecting. I got the Assiomas and they are not only cheaper, but they are lighter, made better, look good, spin far more smoothly (the Garmin Vector 3 pedals spin like there is glue inside), and basically just work. Shane's videos are on point.

    Shane, I’m getting around a +3 or 4 PCO reading on the left side and -5 or -6 on the right side. Before I embark on trying to fix my dynamics, did you test multiple pairs of these petals to check for consistent readings across the pairs?

  • @gplama

    @gplama

    4 жыл бұрын

    I can't justify purchasing multiple pairs. One thing to be aware of (having thought more about this recently) is that perfect symmetry might not be optimal. A professional bike fitter should be able to get you in an optimal position - where a non zero PCO might be best.

    Had you removed and remounted the pedals between test 1 and 2 to cause the offset? Or did you go from test 1 to 2 without removing pedals and they weirdly needed calibrating again? I find my P1 pedals can sometimes be 200w off (reading 10w when cruising around 200w) when I transfer them from bike to bike, where i'll ride for 10 minutes and then zero them and all is then (presumably) happy days.

    I gave up on my Vector 3 pedals. They worked well for two weeks then it all went south. They were under reading massively, >20%. I stopped and calibrated them which worked for a few minutes of steady state riding before under reading again. I did all the usual, new batteries etc like Shane recommends but to no avail. I can only conclude there is something catastrophically amiss with Garmin's QA/QC that means although this is potentially a good product its unreliable. I bought mine in mid 2018, in the hope all the problems had been ironed out.

    It might be an issue with your battery cap. I had the same problem for over a year until I found they had released new caps to fix the problem. Check the cap and look for a little number. My original ones were V1. The ones they sent me were V3. The cap was slightly too small for the batteries, causing the batteries to stick and not move freely for the spring to be able to push them against the contact in the pedal. The battery moves completely free in the V3 cap. Send Powertap an email and ask for them to send out new caps. They were going to get me to buy them but I said it should be a warranty issue and they sent them for free.

    @@dan110024, I thank you for your reply. The number on my battery caps is "V3". I will do a balance test on them with a container of water hanging from each pedal. I just bought the Vector 3S version and I don't really know if the reading is accurate compared with my Tacx Vortex trainer. I calibrated the trainer and using the Tacx Testing Dashboard utility from their iOS app Tacx says that at 30km/h the power should be aprox 130W, but it displays 150W and the Vector 3S 170W. What should I do? After 1h ride on Zwift the difference in power between Vortex and Vector 3S is aprox 20-25W.

The pedals fantastic, but you made me do my own testing after your troubles and thankfully no issues what so ever.
