The most anticipated (and well overdue) smart trainer update has finally landed. Over four years since the NEO 2T hit the shelves, Garmin have released the TACX NEO 3M. M standing for.... well.. I don't know. Moderate? More expensive? Likely both. In this video I dive into all the updates and details of this latest offering from Garmin.

    The thing that could make me upgrade my 1st generation Neo to a newer version would be Kickr Climb (or its competitors) compatibility, or at least "can be made to work with them". Maybe that rocker plate basically means the bike can rotate around the trainer, but I won't base a $2000 purchase on a guess that it might work. And even if it works with the climb things that's a BIG price tag. Which means I'll probably stick to my old Neo for the time being even if the new one works with climb. And of course I won't buy a trainer that doesn't get a thumbs up from you!

    Very odd the only 2 issues they had with the Tacx Neo 2 do not seem to be fixed. The biggest issue with the 2 is the fact if you have 12 speed you need to remove the Hub and add spacers behind it to get it to allow enough space for the 12 speed derailluer to move, and even then you need to true your gears to make it work. The second is the clearance issues, with disc brake bikes they nearly rub on the non drive side, or sometimes do rub, yet no mention of added space. Very weird to wait this long, not have Wifi built in, and to waste time with a gimmick built in motion plate. Disappointing.

    @@gplama+1 to the clearance issue being a joke. I had that problem with my Canyon Endurace and the official recommendation I got (after trying the spacers) was to unbolt my brake caliper. The rubbing was largely cosmetic on the part of the trainer and didn't affect my brake alignment, so I just left it.

    From the updates on this new unit vs the 2t, it seems as if the motor unit is still the same as for the older Neo 2t. For those with a powerful sprint, a word of caution about the NEO 2t and potentially 3M: it cannot handle sprints over ~1300 watts, contradicting the advertised 2200 watt capability. I've used a Neo 2t for years and found that it often starts to slip and eventually locks up around 1300 watts (no matter the flywheel speed and on the latest firmware). My experience, supported by others online, questions its maximum power claims. I even replaced a unit early on that couldn't handle 1000 watts. I love my Neo 2t in all other aspects and it is great for everything but sprinting, however accurate power specifications are a must at this price point. It would be great to see a review also starring someone punchy who can consistently sprint well over 1200 watts on this new unit to verify whether Tacx and Garmin are still wildly exaggerating the (2200w) sprinting capabilities.

    The Tacx trainers is the ones that I see being moved for the highest amount of dollars so they are probably the trainer group that needed to least the least amount of changes. Added motion plats is nice. Pre-installed cassette is, like you said, iffy because it assumes a 99% market share of Shimano 11-speed cassettes which doesn't ring true. The existing trainer already has quite a batch of features that aren't present on other trainers like downhill simulation, working without power, portability, high gradient/watt outputs etc. So I don't know what else they could've provided with an updated trainer unit. But looking at the updated prices, how is this thing worth double the cost as the 2T? That is like the price of a Kickr and the climb simulator combined. The price point of 900 USD for the 2T is looking like a mighty fine deal right now. I'm disappointed and keen to see if they release an updated Tacx NEO bike since it the bulk of the unit is just a Tacx trainer with the other parts of it being not-so nice to use like the bulky shifter hoods and shifter. That is what most needed an updated refresh in their lineup, not the Flux or Tacx trainers.

    Hey Shane, I really like your reviews and I have a request. Can you add a maintenance section to your reviews? Many smart trainers fail after a few years of use due to broken bearings and some models require specialty tools to replace them. Sometimes, these tools aren't even available. The Tacx Neo 2T is a good example, as initially it was impossible to extract the bearings due to a proprietary locking mechanism. I feel it's part of the package to be able to replace these wearable parts. I have no problem buying extra tools or spare parts for a reasonable price, but they have to be readily available for at least 5 years after launch in my opinion. I'm looking for a quality new trainer that can last many years even with a lot of riding. The Kickr V5 I have is a disappointment in this regard, as it is super difficult to remove the aluminum pulley wheel and I cannot buy a replacement if it breaks during my repair. Without removing it, I cannot change the bearings.

  • @gplama

    @gplama

    4 ай бұрын

    I don't think a lot of manufacturers know what's going to break after a few years. Their maintenance procedures are usually published/known 12 months+ after release, if at all. NEO/NEO2/2T case-in-point with the bearings kits and bearing extractor tools they started selling on their own website years after the NEO range was released. Knowing what parts are user serviceable/replaceable would be beneficial. Again, not a lot of manufacturers will disclose this. I'll keep it in mind.

    On a plus point for Garmin …. I’m on my second warranty replacement Neo2T. First one had mechanical issues like the magnets were rubbing the disc plate. 18 months later its warranty replacement blew its PCB. Both were replaced seamlessly by Garmin in a warranty service. So £1700 it might be (in GBP) but at least it’s got back up if the 2T is anything to go by…. But this just seems like a 2T with a base plate to me so not sure it’s worth the outlay

    meh... I saved a lot of money and recently picked up 2 almost unused Neo 1 trainers... what did I give up? some wifi stuff and a carry handle? and I suppose a warranty... for about $450 value (I traded some stuff so no cash outlay) for that price difference I'll ride the old ones... although that carry handle does look like a nice feature.

    I think the other area where this is out of date at launch is with the Zwift cog device… that may be a much lower spec trainer but knowing I could drop any of the bikes in my household onto it makes it way more appealing than this. I say this as someone who has done thousands of kilometres on a Neo mk 1 without issue who is looking to change their current setup. I’m torn between the Zwift offering or busting the bank with a Kickr Bike!

    I somewhat get that r&d probably is costly, but at this point it doesnt offer enough to justify a price tag of 2k. Other than the motion plates i don't see why its that much more expensive over a kickr core or sth like that. i really dont care about surface simulation and such, also who needs 2200w peak? the 1% of the 1%?

  • @mathias8013

    One thing about smart trainers is that once you have one, I don't really see what would convince you to upgrade? I have the Wahoo Kickr, the only thing that I would like is virtual shifting in the way that Zwift has on their trainer. Unless mine breaks down, I don't see why I would ever upgrade, unlike a bike or a phone for example?

    Shane, on a totally different tangent: for steady state zone 2 riding which has the best feel: Kickr Rollr or Feedback omnium?

  • @gplama

    @gplama

    6 ай бұрын

    That's an interesting question. I see them as serving two different purposes. The Omnium is an amazingly portable/compact unit. Great for travel/race warm-ups. The Rollr on the other hand comes in a HUGE box. Almost the size of a Kickr BIKE box. Size aside, I'll go with the Kickr Rollr as having a better ride feel as it has a flywheel (and a lot more smarts).

  • @thedownunderverse

    @@gplama Thanks Lama - the challenge is cutting through the gaff (which seems to be miss-represented in places) as to what features are available on the Rollr *without* a power meter. If (like me) one has decided not to “train” with power anymore, but still wants to throw the bike on a trainer quickly and interact with Zwift courses on a rainy or sweltering day (like changing resistance on hills), will the Rollr actually do this? Or does it basically become a very expensive Omnium? Appreciate all you do 🇦🇺

  • @gplama

    @gplama

    6 ай бұрын

    Oh yes... that.... The day I saw the press releases come in that the Rollr no longer needed a power meter I jumped straight on it to test this. Whatever was posted in the media was misleading. In a BIG way. I have a massive list of tests/results I've performed that resulted in me getting extremely frustrated. In short, the RGT would estimate power from the Rollr when paired via BLE and supported SIM mode with that. That's it. It was very much like a basic speed/power curve from a dumb trainer, but limited ONLY to RGT and ONLY using BLE. Zwift have a basic implementation but it's non-interactive (No SIM or ERG). So you're on the money - it's an expensive Omnium without a power meter on your bike.

  • @thedownunderverse

    @thedownunderverse

    6 ай бұрын

    @@gplama massive (seemingly deliberate) missed opportunity there. Being able to ride an interactive Zwift course on a Rollr without a power meter would be a killer feature. And the limitation is purely software, the hardware building blocks are all there. Oh well, feedback gets my money and wahoo doesn’t. Bonus: omnium is cheaper, more portable and usable without electricity.

Surely they should recognise that your channel provides one of the premium sources of independent reviews for their line of products, not to mention the highly targeted advertising they would receive?
