    I absolutely love this watch. I was considering buying the Fenix, but when I saw the Instinct 2 with the better battery life and cheaper price, I got hooked. It really reminds me of a cooler version of the G Shock. I like Casio and currently use a Pro Trek Solar. The Garmin is probably the perfect smart watch. Apple has ridiculously short battery life, the Fenix also is quite a lot more expensive and to be honest, I don't need a coloured screen. The Instinct, with the rugged ability yet all the features, is perfectly fine. I don't need to make phone calls on the thing. I just want a mutlifunction smart watch that has a long battery life, looks good and will stand the test of time. I think this is it.

    @@AlphaPews Thanks a lot. I really appreciate it. I like the tactical design and for the small extra cost, I think it's worth going for that one. I also like Stealth Mode. In terms of colour, I like the black. I was considering a 3rd party strap though. Possibly a military style green in nylon. It's a smaller matter. On another note, in terms of analogue watches, I really like Vostock Europe and also Citizen Promaster Altichron. As much as I like analogue, the smart watch is just so packed with features and hard to pass up. I can pair the Garmin with my Iphone and utilize it's features even more. I really do like old classic designs, but also the modern tech. I'm really in the middle.

    so interestingly I'm a analogue watch guy also. I broke a vostok so I'd say if you want something better and stronger with more appeal go for a seiko SKX 007 or 0013 or even a citizen promaster auto diver or the solar version too. Both are ISO rater divers 200m and having broken the vostok I realised the QC wasn't good and for a few bucks more I could have had a better watch Citizen Men's Promaster Diver Solar Powered Watch with Rubber Strap amzn.eu/d/6kyJ4Oq

    I'm following this watch since the Instinct 1. But I couldn't afford it so far. This is a real nice watch. One thing I miss on this watch is the maps. We can't see near by streets and trails. We can only upload them. So I can't leave my phone behind. The Fenix would be a complete watch. But it's way too expensive. One more thing about Instinct 2 is seems they have flipped the glass. You can't see the time when you turn on light in Certain angle.

  • @AlphaPews

    Hi Laura, I agree Fenix watches are very pricy but for me the Instinct offers some great features and now with the version 2, even better options. Shame there isn't a simple map option. But I've recently added a waypoint for all my local towns and cities so at least I can have a visual reference to nearest populated areas at a glance. Can be useful if you lose data connectivity but not GPS.

    Just picked up this watch and actually pretty surprised with it. I initially I didn't think I would like the screen but It did grow on me. Im coming from a Fenix 3 HR. Sensor wise, it does feel like I get all the tracking I wanted with the same sensors as the Fenix 7. I'm finding I am not missing the color screen that much. The only thing which would be nice as an add was a ballistics app but so far pretty happy.

    Heart rate is the killer for the battery. Best settings are as follows ultratrac, HR off, phone off, switch off at night (on my Instinct 1 non solar) I've gotten superb runtimes. Full GPS with glonass or galileo will burn away the power. Ultratrac is good in open areas for long rides or hiking.

I keep going back to a 25 year old Timex that has chunks torn out of the bezel, because it is the only thing that has kept ticking (har har) through multiple deployments and other abuse. I'm excited to give this a whirl... If it's as durable as old faithful, I'll be impressed!

They have got rid the the second circle which makes the display cleaner. I'm not sure about battery like but I doubt it will exceed the solar versions. So far Instinct 2 solar have the acclaimed unlimited battery

    it tops up rather than charges. so in thr summer in europe on a day where there is strong sunlight it will assist like 2% depending how much sun exposure. Think of it a maintainer rather than charger. The watch does so much stuff the solar panels would have to be massive to charge a complete device. I have a solar device still and it'd exactly the same

    Bought this version New off Scamazon and got it out of box and took a couple attempts to connect to phone as popped up saying failed connection. Garmin Instinct 2 Solar Tactical Rugged Watch V2 (name on box bit of a mouthful). Tried to change things on the watch in the app but says it couldnt and i had to use the clunky long winded menu to change things which really sucked in all honesty. Watch feels plastic and cheap in my hand considering its £400. While i was sitting down and in GPS mode as i moved my hands it was saying i was taking steps which give false readings and considering the GPS can tell im on the same spot pretty poor? Immediate false readings. Screen was glossy and hard to read unless looking directly down at it in sunlight. In person looked a bit dinky and had nothing Rugged about it. I hate things being called something in the name its not. Just like Smart cars... i dont think they are Smart. Interface is really long winded and just so dated compared to other great watches out there. Sent back.

    @@AlphaPews The newer one the v2 in this vid. Was a bad ride. Thanx for the vid though i appreciated your time while i was figuring out what i wanted. Just all went wrong for me as soon as i took it out the box my heart sank when i put it on my wrist. Felt a bit like a kids watch not somethning i paid £400 for. Also suprised me how retro and long winded it all felt rather than modern and intuitive like most technology seems to be. No tide chart either on the tactical was poor as well. They really could have included that its not hard. The screen felt quite washed and hard to read at angles unlike the Gbd-h1000 or 2000. This reason alone is a huge problem for me and seem a very big issue to many with these watches it seems on reddit. Back to the old faithful Casio for now i guess.

  • @AlphaPews

    @AlphaPews

    it's weird how they change things like screen polarisation when it wasn't broken but garmin said was due to solar and full sun reading. I love a Casio too, today I got lost in a local forest due to being off trail. luckily the navigation saved the day as phone had no service and no visual waypoints. I also wish it was less old skool but basically garmin saved the simple features for the fenix line and for me the extra costs isn't viable. I also wish it had tide chart app( but garmin has surf editions) so they want people to buy extra rather than support end users.

    @@AlphaPews The way a "wipe" is supposed to be done is basically the system writes "0" on the entire storage over and over again (3-4 times minimum for civilian use, perhaps more for tactical data). If done that way, it is practically impossible to recover, especially on solid state storage. The wipe on this watch just resets it. The data is simply never overwritten, only the index is gone - the data is only overwritten when new data needs space. So a high school kid with right tools can recover it. I'd expect a bit more sense from Garmin tbh.

  • @AlphaPews

    @AlphaPews

    Hi buddy really cool insight about this. Its odd that the wipe isn't more significant unless garmin aren't sharing it for security reasons. I appreciate your input- stay awesome.

    The utility in it is that the data will not be instantly readable. No one will be able to extract the memory of this specific watch and get out the un-overwritten sensitive data precisely on the go. When it becomes possible, in a forensic analysis that might come later, the data will presumably not be very useful. Therefore there is nothing wrong with this functionality. Alas, the NATO standard is 7 “passes”, which would take too much time and would be obvious in a situation where the watch would quickly “change hands” (no pun intended) - One of the rare situations where this command to be sensible in the first place.

    Hi Nik, honestly depends what features it has that are important for you. For me the training tactical modes, solar charging and superb battery life made it a solid upgrade from the mk1 Instinct. With any gear/kit have something that works for you, not against. No point spending money when you may have 90% of the functions. This is why I haven't got a dual set of NVG, my mono provides the same functionality so duals aren't a solid investment for me personally. I hope this helps
