Seen a few pro’s do KZread videos on the Garmin G80 and this is the first mostly negative review I’ve seen. The ball was very close to the unit during the test, could this influence readings also was the Garmin taking into account Based on all the reviews I’ve seen I think I would still buy one of these.

The straight shots were all pretty much bang on. It predicted your pulls to be shorter and your push to be longer as it was giving you the distance for if they were straight...it measures ball speed not ball direction.

Good honest review. I have the G80 and love it. Improved my game a lot, narrowing down carry distances. You have to remember that to many amateur golfers (low h/c exception) they have at least 5-10 yard variance in their shots anyway so if it says 150, that doesn’t mean they’ll hit the shot 150. Maybe not accurate enough for pro’s but for most mid h/c and above it’ll improve your club selection and scores loads. (I’m off 13 currently)

Thanks for the review. What I found curious was that your swing appeared to be the same for each of your shots....and the swing speed on the Garmin seemed to reflect that, as there was much less variance with the calculated swing speeds. SkyTrack was all over the place. No way you were ONLY swinging 100 on that second Driver shot (as SkyTrack claims). You're a bit "flippy" at the bottom of your downswing, which may give the SkyTrack some issues, as it is offset compared to the Garmin.....also, the Garmin is sitting somewhat between your ball and the SkyTrack. I think there are limitations to both launch monitors.

Imo for practice being accurate for wedges is more important than accurate for driver.... It doesn't really matter if your driver is 260 or 270 but that 10 yard for wedges is the difference between being on the green or chipping from the rough

Fair enough review. Just remember it's also a GPS which alone would be worth half the price so the launch monitor side is more £200, although you maybe should have said this point at the start. I prefer GPS although I also have a laser because let's face it, we only even need the centre or back yardage, and as a low handicapper if anyone says give them a tip, I always say just use the back yardage because your always short. Personally I prefer arccos for yardages because its data from on course and grass. I've had a different portable launch monitor in the SC300 and found it was most useful learning wedge shots anyway, this is the area I found improved most as I learnt my half, three quarter and full yardages with wedges, which I saw instant improvement on the course with. So for this I think the Garmin is more than adequate for the price. You can get it for £350 of a certain site with discount code so in my opinion it's a bargain at this price.

To me this all depends on how strait you can hit the ball, because it can’t see where you’ve hit it on the face if you pull it the numbers will be off. Notice on the strait shots there wasn’t much in it.

Hi Lee, seems to be a little pilot error in this one. If you go to settings, you'll find you can adjust the roll factor this improves the accuracy of the total distance. I've got one of these and checked it against QC Quad and a 'tape measure' - interesting - given that the tape measure is accurate, neither GC Quad or the Garmin G80 gives exact but I found both to be very close - certainly more accurate than any golfers club yardage/consistency. I agree with you on the matter of the GPS yardage on holes for the courses I've used it on - but like you tend to laser within 150yards

The reason for the higher ball speed differences is that skytrak underestimates ball speeds in the 130 mph range by 3 mph and in the 160 mph range by 5 mph. So I would say that the garmin is more close to the truth on the longer shots.

Good review. I purchased the G80 and have returned it, because none of the practice data is recorded on your device and you cannot select clubs, you have zero stats on any clubs in practice sessions. The app is very weak. Other than that is is an OK device, the data it gives is solid and the target practice and virtual rounds mode is nice.

Now here’s an idea...hit a ball on the course (or range), pace it out, write it down. Note your averages and maximum distances and keep them in a notebook or memorise them. I did that 25 years ago and am fortunate to still hit to the same yardages.

  • @stephenwhale2198
    @stephenwhale21983 жыл бұрын

One of the reasons for the discrepancy might be to do with the proximity of the G80 to the ball. The set-up suggests 30 cm for the optimum results. On your test your ball position looked a bit closer than that. I don't have one, so it might just be an inconsistent device.

I bought one of these before xmas new at for £360. As we are in lock down i set up my own nets etc. Im no expert golfer but finding the G80 an excellent tool. My club head speed in my irons around 79/80 mph so experimenting with different makes of ball i can see the total distances change too.

Tony, I didn't set the roll factor as I don't take any notice of roll on simulators mate. A lot of people have said about the 1 foot thing but it does say "within" 1 foot in the manual. I am going to test this against GC Quad when we are allowed to play out again and put it exactly 1 foot away. If it is 1 foot that is recommended then it should specify that in the manual. As a reviewer I test as per the manual or marketing when it comes to clubs. Thanks for your comment. Just want to say I love my G80. Its great fun at the range but I don't pay a lot of attention to its launch monitor data.

I don't have a net yet so I tried indoor with a foam ball but it does not seem to work for me. It registers a swing (by beeping) but does not return any number. Do you think it needs to be a real ball for it to work? Does it need a ball at all to work? Just wondering if my unit has malfunction. I would appreciate your response. Thanks.

The SkyTrak I use doesn't match the GCQuad, the GCQuad doesn't match the TrackMan, the TrackMan doesn't match the Full Swing. If you want to claim one is more accurate than the other you really need to compare it with real life measurements, not just assume the most expensive one is the most accurate.

I'm not sure you quite understand the physics involved when you say "you're never going to know" if it's measurements are accurate, because its limitations are obvious from that testing and other testing i've seen on youtube. Ball speed measurement is pretty flawless, but as it doesn't measure spin, it's simulating based off perfect strike for the given launch angle and ball speed. that means for a typical 7i launch angle it's calculating it with about 6500-7000 spin with no curvature, because that's all it can do with the data it collects...... When you hit one straight down the middle with a good strike it was pretty much spot on... when you start slicing and hooking it's going to increase the level of error in its estimations. hit to the right with a fade, it estimated over (couldn't detect the higher spin) and when you missed left with a draw it estimated under (couldn't detect the drop off in spin) All you have to do is watch your shot shape through the air and figure out if it's going to have slightly over or under estimated and compare it to you baseline of good straight shots. As a training aid, if you're missing green left or right by 5-10 yards it doesn't matter how accurate your distances are. From what you've shown in your testing I think it's a great gapping tool for people who can't afford the 20k launch monitors. just note the distances from your good clean strikes and ignore any where you're significantly off line and it appears as if it would be pretty accurate within a yard or two. Also as someone trying to increase their ball speed it seems like the best option for accurate ball speed measurements and tracking progress.

Not certain you are measuring the tolerances stated by Garmin correctly. Surely Garmin did not state their tolerances were based on Skytrak??? There is no way that Skytrak is spot on for carry either as it doesn't track the ball down range, so it's just a calculation based on initial ball characteristics after impact.

No real green reader either and didn’t sync my scorecard to the app. On the practice tee, wedges and woods were good but the reads on the middle irons , awful. Start a round at any course you like. No need to be near the coruse. Go to scroing and enter a score for the hole. Then switch to the next hole and so on. Then finish the round and save. Everything is synced with tha phone and works as expected. Then do the same, but enter your score and the score for a second player. After finishing the round and saving, you will find a scorecard with the final score but no hole scores on your phone. I did this several times with different courses and everytime I enter only my score it works, and everytime I enter a second players score it does not. Already wrote my findings to the support. Should hopefully help the developers. I am software developer and I like it, when bugs are fully reproducable. So this should help. @@davidcarr3636 I like the G80 very much, it is easy to see in daylight and shows all the yardages to hazards and, obviously front, center and back of green, with the ability to drag the pin position to as near as possible to the correct place for better accuracy. Owing to courses being closed, I haven't been able to use it for play recently, but I have erected a golf net in the back garden, and just played a virtual round, around Augusta National, which, whilst not being realistic, (I shot 83, and probably couldn't break 100 round there off 11 handicap), but it gives me a game to play in these lock down days. I'm really pleased I bought it if only for this feature. There are other modes to use to. I don't think the yardages are particularly accurate in virtual mode, my driver going shorter than I would expect, and my wedge going further, but for the limited technology it has, it gives great pleasure in being able to play a game in the garden. I am always reluctant to recommend anything to anyone, as opinions can vary so much, but I am pleased I bought it. @@davidcarr3636 You're welcome. I find it difficult to get a true yardage with my driver. I hit a similar distance with it as my 4wood, (between 190 and 205), I've tried the driver off a tee and off the mat, and it's about the same. My hybrids and irons down to 9 iron are pretty representative of my course yardages, and my wedges seem to be a tad further. The putting out doesn't happen, the shot to the green ends in a target and it gives you a 1,2 or 3 putt depending on which circle you finish in, distance from the pin, that is a down side maybe, but it's more accurate hitting fairways, so I guess swings and roundabouts. I have only played 2 virtual rounds, and have scored better than I would have expected on the course, but it's a bit of fun, and better than just wacking balls in a net. For the price it's good, but you need to spend a lot more money if you want to have a proper simulator like the you tube channels have. I don't want to spend that kind of money. I'm happy with it, but I can imagine that some people wouldn't be.

Sir. You are comparing Apples to Oranges. Though they are both fruit they don't offer the same taste. Sky Track is monitoring "The Club at Impact" mingled with "The Ball Speed" using the face of the club and angles to produce it's shot pattern. The G80 is using "Ball Speed" which is why when you play the games it can't show you "Shot Flights" but has a darn good algorithm on calculating distance. Monitors showing you ball flights are using infra-red as camera's to capture launch angle, ball speed, angle of attach, side spin, Dopler, etc to produce the shot shapes. This 3 Golf Ball Marker length, fits in your pocket GPS unit for only $499 is a Giant Slayer. I'm not saying the Skytrak isnt accurate. But the results you have produced are relative to eachother and not the pure fact. For example, you say the SkyTrak can be 2 yards out, and Garmin say their tolerance is 5 yards. So that's potentially a 7 yard difference before a ball has been struck. And yes you mentioned it as a side point that you will test it, near the end (you see I still watched despite my opinion, and that's all this is), but I think the verdict could of been different and perhaps a bit more diplomatic than just writing it off
