    after nearly a month of extensively researching just about every watch there is, using some personal criteria that I guess is a bit too demanding for what the current offerings have, having poor eyesight, I decided the Venu 2 had the best mix of things, plus an accurate HRM, whereas no other Garmin had the 4th gen HRM except the 945 LTE, which is only 1.2" screen. But I am going to kick myself if the Fenix 7 comes out a couple weeks from now after I order the Venu 2 >:\ . I really wanted that PacePro feature, which is not in the Venu 2, but otherise it seems to be a superior device for sensors compared to all the other Garmin devices.

    Great review Dave, always appreciate your more relatable perspective. I feel like you hit all the points most of us look for which i think we all appreciate. As for the watch, it feels like it’s getting harder and harder to justify pulling the trigger on a new GPS watch. We’re starting to reach that tech-ceiling where we wonder “is this enough” to justify the price-tag. Mind you it’s a great watch, but how much of it will I really utilize? This leads me to “hold off,” but 5 years later I still haven’t made the purchase because I wait for the “next best thing” 😂 I think in the end the sticker shock is real. I love what they offer, but when a daily watch like my Apple Watch covers most of my needs and gives me the full gamut of smart features, it gets hard to justify the cost. Maybe a 55 would actually cover my needs. Anyway, thanks again!

  • @ChaseTheSummit

    @ChaseTheSummit

    Yup, I think buyers get carried away with what features they think they ABSOLUTELY NEED. I've been wearing the Forerunner 55 and COROS PACE 2 this week for a comparison video and I honestly don't feel like I'm missing out on much except for when I was trail running and kinda wish I had my maps! But yeah. Buy what you need. Not what you think you need! The Forerunner 55 has been pretty awesome so far. Thanks for watching!

    Thx Great video. Hoping the 955 will drop June 1st . I am coming from an AW Series 7 and will keep that on just to have for communication as I hate running with a phone. I will be one of those nut jobs running with 2 watches, but they are for different purposes. I am also testing a Coros Pace 2. While I love the simplicity of the Coros watch, the dial and the app-- it just seems Garmin has so many features embedded into the running ecosystem--and that it's inevitable I will get a Garmin. For me thats the pull and push for VDot workouts from a coach straight to my watch, the ability to set the next interval with the lap button as opposed to automatically switching and the Pace Pro with course layouts. There are other features that the Garmins have vs the Coros and vice versa. It just depends on the individual needs. I imagine Garmin Pace Pro will be amazing for a race course like Boston. As far as the LTE-- they should have weather updates and some other features you mentioned. I hope that they can update it to justify the monthly cost without purchasing a new watch.

    As an avid year round paddleboarder, I am often out alone. I always carry my phone for safety reasons. This LTE Forerunner might make me feel a little better about leaving the phone at home. I do wish there was a way to add more custom text responses so I might better explain to my wife what I am trying to say. Would also be nice if she had a way to text me on the watch.....or maybe if we both had the watch there could be a text walkie-talkie feature between the two watches? Also, I currently use a 735XT and it pretty much does everything I want for my activity tracking....but the added LTE feature would be great. I just don't really need all of the advanced features of the 945. The button controls of the Forerunner series are very important to me. Touchscreens don't really cut it when your hands are wet or sweaty. Nice review of this watch. Thanks!

    again, great review. i have another question: i was wondering: is the 2mm savings on the LTE model coming from reducing the "black plastic bezel" or did they reduce the size of the glass area? or both? this questions is driven by wondering if a tempered glass protector designed for a 935/945 would fit the 945 LTE. one thing that disappoints me with this watch is i was expecting the new model would have adopted the 1.3" screen of the Fenix6pro and reduced the black ring on the glass portion of the watch. i think the entire bezel would be less intrusive if there wasn't such a big dead space on the glass portion of the watch face. (ie, the black border on the crystal/glass itself). from a freeze frame of your video, it seems that they shaved diameter from the resin/plastic case, but i wanted to confirm.

  • @ChaseTheSummit

    @ChaseTheSummit

    2 жыл бұрын

    This was a weird one for me. The glass looked the same so I tried a 945 screen protector and it juuuuust barely didn't fit. They shrunk the glass by a fraction of a millimeter which is super annoying! I measured the lens at 38mm with my calipers if that helps.

I while doing normal get up and go to the restroom and or go grab lunch which requires walking and moving etc. the apple is much more lenient on what it counts as active calories currently as we speak 250 cals. Garmin 28 cals. (huge difference imo) I wonder what you thought on who might be more accurate on this. I started my day at 5am and currently is 3pm The numbers are pretty far apart between the 2. Thanks for any input and great content none activitiy (active) cals burned - more lenient is apple running cals burned - more lenient is 945 LTE weight lifting cals burned - almost the same amount, i call it a tie.

    I think this is due to one displaying active calories and the other displaying total calories. Active calories are calories burned from being active. Total calories include your basil metabolic rate which are calories your body burns just to stay alive. This can make comparing two devices quite difficult.

FR945 LTE WAS 81 ACTIVE CALS VS APPLE SERIES 6 WAS 446 ACTIVE CALS. BOTH RESTING CALS WERE VERY CLOSE TO EACHOTTHER 1900 TO 2200. thats why hard for me to imagine those numbers being so far apart. I’m left with the exact same problem I had before that release. My 935s altimeter is broke since ages. I sweared myself last year that I won’t head into the alps again without a functioning one. Now my HRM seems to give up as well as I just have straight lines all day - besides when I’m into a workout. So it’s really time for a replacement. I really like the updated HRM and the smaller formfactor of the 945 LTE, but “summer” could be August which leaves me another mountain season with the broken altimeter. Additionally I probably would never use the LTE features, but pay a premium for them. The solution could be either the regular 945 or the Fenix 6S Pro. They have maps, advanced sleep metrics and trail vo2 max - all features I’m looking forward to. Fenix has the smaller form factor and I would have something different looking on my wrist - for the cost of 11h GPS time (25 vs 36). 945 would be the same size and looks as my 935 but with the better battery. There isn’t a bad choice, right? But I can’t help myself: buying a 6S Pro or regular 945 leaves me with the feeling to pay good money for an old product. @@ChaseTheSummit Hey again! I now tried the regular 945 as well as the Fenix 6s Pro in the meantime... and things just got more difficult ;) I really like the compact design of the Fenix and the smaller bezel just looks so much better and more modern compared to the 945! The screen looks better as well - the 945 has kind of a blue tint compared to the Fenix. BUT the Fenix just burned through 33% of it's battery within just 24h - normal use, with one longer track workout. I think that's a no-go for me. I wore my 4 year old 935 on the other arm and it just took 15% in the exact same time and use case. Therefore the 945 is obviously the better choice for me, but it looks SO old in comparison. Now I need to somehow justify the over 200€ price-difference between 945 and 945LTE. Can you say something in regards to the screen quality of the 945LTE compared to the regular 945 and maybe the Fenix 6s Pro? Other than that - the 945LTE is still not available in Germany. My stats are based on GPS + Low Power LTE which updates the data every 5 minutes instead of every few seconds. This wasn't clear in the marketing specs I was given. This increases the battery life to 18 hours but Ray over at DCRainmaker actually got 22 hours in low power mode. The nice thing is that you don't lose any accuracy. All of the data is still there, just refreshed a bit slower. Hope that helps!

    Does anyone know if the new garmin watches sleep tracking still requires a preset timeframe in the User Settings in order to work properly? I work in 4 shifts and having to set the time everytime i change shifts, is one of the things i dislike the most about the otherwise amazing garmin watches. As a result it also never registers my afternoon naps after early shift because it's outside of my normal sleeping time. Even the fitbit did a better job at that, counting every nap longer then 15min as rest time wich i personally liked much better. I'm looking to upgrade from my forerunner 235 to get live segments, but i'm wondering if the sleep tracking improved yet on newer garmins.

    This is an awesome review. I ended up buying a FR945 LTE today (waiting for it to ship), but was hoping for a FR 955. I am replacing the Forerunner 935 and have been holding out for months until the new model dropped. Well looks like this is the new model. Luckily the 945 is still a good watch and the LTE is interesting. For $6 a month its worth having just for the peace of mind. What I do like is that you really don't need your phone on short runs anymore. You have music and garmin pay and now emergency services. So that is really everything I used my phone for before other than a camera. I still would probably take my phone for a run thats over 10km from home, but for shorter 5km daily activity type things I can just take my watch which will be nice. I really hope we see Garmin update the LTE to respond to messages and send out non-emergency messages. I realize Garmin doesn't think anyone will stop and reply to a message during a race, but I would like to see a few options like a thumbs-up, thumbs-down, a laughing face, and a heart or something. Basic stuff like that would be easy to reply with a few clicks on the watch while still running or biking or even swimming. It would also be nice to load a few custom messages for loved ones like "I'm ok but running late", "Just checking in", and "Miss You. Wish you were here" or something. I realize it doesn't need to replace a full smartphone, but just give us a little. A few custom messages to pre-defined contacts and a few simple replies to those spectator messages. That is really what is keeping the LTE feature from being truly amazing.

  • @ChaseTheSummit

    @ChaseTheSummit

    Totally agree. I wish they designed the LTE functions to mimic their InReach devices which has "recreational" 2-way messaging without triggering an emergency response and the ability to set up "pre-canned" messages to respond to incoming messages quickly. I'm sure we'll get there. This is only the beginning!

    The 945 LTE is compatible with Quick Fit bands. It uses the same 22mm band as a standard Fenix 6 (47mm version). They don't include it in the box because it's heavier and bulkier than the standard silicone band that sits lower profile on the watch. To install a quick fit band you simply remove the stock band, replace the pin, and click a quick fit band in place. I've actually already done this with the 945 LTE! Hope that helps.

    I'm having a major headache with Garmin. The one feature I wanted from the Garmin 945 lte was to allow live tracking she friends and family can know where I am at all times. This is why I paid for a new 945 lte after already having a 945 already. I spoke to Garmin today and they said I basically still need my mobile with me to use that feature which just means I paid for the same watch and paid for a subscription on top for no reason. Now either the person I spoke to at Garmin is incompetent and doesn't know their products or I have been mislead from their marketing. Can you please help clarify? much appreciated.

    It's not designed to share your location 24 hours / 7 days a week. It will share your location though if you choose to during an activity and you won't need your phone on you for that to work. Essentially if you share your location during a Run or Ride using "live track" your friends and family can track you but when activity is not running there's no location sharing. Hope that helps.

    Great review as always. Always love the “Dave take” on this stuff! However, This is a pretty meek opening salvo from Garmin on LTE. No streaming music? No ability to respond at all to people sending messages? $5.99/mo seems awfully expensive when fully functional LTE with apple isn’t a whole lot more. I personally think they would have been better off joining forces with a Verizon or ATT to allow this functionality. Go big or go home! Still a Garmin fan though, and a Fenix 6 is in my future!

  • @ChaseTheSummit

    I think the problem with "joining forces" is that they pigeon hole themselves in with one provider and the platform will eventually die (Much like the Vivoactive LTE that was available on Verizon). I think it's smart that they're handling the whole infrastructure. That said, this is the beginning and I can only assume more features will come as time goes on. I'm wondering if the lack of streaming services is something to do with bandwidth of the network they're utilizing. In either case, it's an exciting first step in my opinion. Thanks for watching Dan!

    I appreciate all your hard work in doing these reviews. I guess for me though this watch feels like a beta product. It has a half baked LTE service, lacks the HIiT training profile and health snapshot, both of which debuted with the Venu 2. It also doesn’t have the weekly training load watch face that the 745 has (which DCRainmaker loves). It’s little things like that which frustrates me like crazy with Garmin and makes a lot of their products non starters for me because of their just random assignment of features to various products.
