I bet you'll get used to the weight and not notice it when running after a few weeks. The Garmin 945 might be a good alternative if you're looking for similar features in a lighter (cheaper) build. Great review. Thanks for taking the time to put this together!

Over the last couple of months, I "stepped down" from the Fenix 5+ over the FR245 to the Instinct. I quite like the toned down complexity I got with every step. The only thing I miss is running power through their Running Dynamics Pod or Stryd (the latter still giving me way more accurate pace/distance readings). I hope Garmin gets native running power before or when the Instinct 2 arrives some day.

I currently use the Garmin 5S +, which was a big step up from the 5S since it provided for music, audio books, and podcasts. I will stick with it rather than upgrade at this point. Garmin is having lots of problems with its Garmin Express software that runs on your Mac and the current macOS, Catalina. Their technical assistance is really good, but they can not currently solve some problems that exist.

Hi Stephen ! Did you order a « large » quick fit band or is it the one sold with the 6s? Because I had the 5s and the strap was so short. My wrist is only 17cm... I had to return the watch. It seems to fit so well on your wrist 😉

Thanks for the review. I'll weigh in as well in case it helps. I have thin wrists and I recently purchased the 5s in black which actually looks pretty good on my wrist. It doesn't look feminine at all but may be a tad too small. The only thing I didn't realize or forgot was that I couldn't stream music from it. Not a huge deal, but it had me thinking of the 6 and 6s because of that feature and the maps that frankly I probably wouldn't use all that much anyway. But, if could have all, it may be worth the jump in price. Anyway, just received both the 6 and 6s, and for my taste and wrist, the 6 was a little big, but looked better size-wise that the 5. I then tried on the 6s and this is why I am writing. It definitely felt a bit feminine and smaller than the 5s and is for sure a no-go for me. Currently wearing the 6 and even though it may be slightly big for my wrist, I am warming up to it real quick. **Update** went with the 6 and I love it. Doesn't feel too big anymore. Just took my brain a second to adjust.

Different class of watch. Garmin fenix is an outdoor/activity watch. The smart function is minimal. The apps are sports centric. Built in text responses. No touchscreen or mic. Samsung is a smartwatch plus it tries to be a fitness watch. If youre active or outdoors a lot, fenix 6x can last 2.5 weeks at most, heavy use 5-7 days. The Samsung 2 days max, heavy use 6-9hrs.

Connecting a watch to a laptop is very 2010 tech . Apple Watch stores activities and syncs automatically with the iPhone . Apps are also running native on Apple Watch . Routes sync instantly with the iPhone .battery life is 2days or more depending on activity but that’s not a problem because most people take their watches off every night before bed and charge it .

Garmin fenix is not a smartwatch. It 's a sports computer with the smartwatch features. It's a seriously dope powerful training and monitoring tool. Being able to tune it _exactly_ how you'd want it to be is the #1 top reason to buy one. Bazillion of settings is not a downside, it's a huge upside. You can set your runs to follow a certain schedule, certain route. While on the run it can notify you about (and guide to) favourite strava segments, or let you know if you're out of pre-selected HR zones. It can beep you the cadence, it can let you do laps or do it automatically, it can make a pace plan for you, for your run and help you follow it! It's insanely powerful little device and reading the manual is totally worth it :) Thanks for the review! Very easy to follow.

Garmin has good hardware... But disappoint on the software front. I had a VA4s, but it felt like a Porsche with a lawn mower motor inside, and ugly blue backlight. The apps are just a disgrace and the way to pay for apps is also very dodgy. There is so much low hanging fruit and the selling point of Garmin is great: functional sports watches without the gimmicks. Also, the Sp02 measurement is way off: my Fitbit Charge 4 is spot on and costs less than a Forerunner 45. I always say that one day I will buy a Garmin again because it focuses on my activities (Fitbit is for ladies who want to save weight), but I try to postpone it as long as possible until they have their watches beyond the beta stage or much cheaper. If you see new releases going to 800 EUR and more, you know it's not going to happen and it is just expensive imperfection.

Lol the Fenix 6s is lightweight buddy! It's the ladies version of the 6X, which is a bit of a heavy beast.

I just received my 6X Today. It is very washed out very bluish screen. I have seen some other people complain about this. I will be returning it. You might want to update everybody watching. It seems to be hit or miss. Very disappointing for the money.

Who would use these sort of watches without having access to a computer. Also the battery life depends on the settings... my old Fenix 3 lasts ages, but then I have turned off smart notifications and bluetooth unless I want to use it.

Just get a Galaxy Watch(or Active 2) or a Fossil Gen 5 if you want a MUCH MUCH better UI and features, a round face and something that's not Apple and works great on Android. And with a Galaxy watches they sync phenomenally with Samsung phones but unlike Apple you're not required to own a Samsung phone to use them and don't lose features, it's just an eaiser pairing experience on a Samsung phone.

They don't have a quarter of the battery life and half the fitness functions though. There is nothing on 'real' smart watches that matches Garmin Connect. You do gain a lot of smart watch functionality though.

Why tf does a smartwatch not have a touchscreen in 2020? That's absurd, and for $1000 also. Are they crazy? Hell even a rotating crown or bezel would have EASILY made up for the lack of a touchscreens since I use crowns and bezels(Galaxy Watch) to navigate on watches more often than I do the tiny touchscreens anyway. Just a GLARING negative and an absolute dealbreaker. Who wants to constantly be touching little buttons to navigate a clunky UI, and especially a 2d map, like it's the 90s, early 00s again? Again the thing is around $1k so there's ZERO excuse to not have SOMETHING user friendly to navigate, esp in this day and age when user experience is like 75%(or more) of what guides ppl to pick one product over another. And if it's a patent issue just pay the licensing fee, they are a huge company that can afford it. Overall I feel you can get a smartwatch with similar to even superior features for a quarter to half of the price depending on what you're looking for, and all of those come with great ui navigation, app stores and personal assistants. But I guess for true outdoor sport tracking and for things like expedition planning and stuff this is your only true choice as the other don't really do those things. If they would combine the features of this watch with the features of something like a Galaxy Watch, Fossil Gen 5 or even Apple Watch it would be untouchable in the smartwatch space.

The 6S sucks! Even the sapphire screen has the cheap "blue" screen, instead of the "true black" screen on all the other "Fenix 6 Sapphire" models. The naming scheme is also ridiculous because all the sapphire models include all the "Fenix 6 Pro" features, they just leave the "Pro" out of the sapphire range name. Confusing.
