    Eric, thanks for the Garmin review(s). You help me narrow down my choice on a dash cam. With all of the dash cam options, it can be overwhelming but your videos helped me simplify what I'm looking for in a dash cam, which the Garmin 57 fits the bill. Now to jump over to your website and order it!

    Also, something all reviews fail to mention: even though the camera itself is good at what it does, the accompanying Garmin Drive app is a train wreck. I very seldom get frustrated over user experiences but in this case they've done some really bad choices during the development. It's as if the ones building the app haven't tried how it works to use it with the device. It's just...bad, really really bad. They've read a specification and done it to the letter but nobody has evaluated if any of it makes any sense for the user and the most common use cases.

    You make no mention on any of your reviews that with this 6-sided magnetic mount, the camera can be remounted in the same EXACT position IF a person carefully removes it by pulling on the part that holds the magnet, not the camera. Your reviews are very good, thanks for your work. I'm looking for something to take video of offroad challenges and scenery...mainly like an action cam. But I'd love to have perma power, inside/outside cams, and voice commands to start/stop recordings and to switch between cameras. I'm concerned about image stabalization on the 57, and obviously the app wonkiness. Do you think the 57 is good enough for bumpy terrain, or would it make my tummy ill to watch? Thanks.

    I have some questions about this cam (or series). You mention that with Parking Guard, if the vehicle is bumped, the cam can alert you via the app. My question is, how can it do that unless you are close to the cam, within Bluetooth range? If it doesn't have a SIM card, it would have very minimal distance, as far as I can see. ??? Also, you talk about the Drive App, "Live View" it works via connection to WiFi. Again, do you mean connecting to our smart phones via WiFi? If so, again, there's a limited distance. So unless I'm missing sometimes, aren't all those connection features distance limited? I do like the sync communications between 2 (or more) cameras. Right now, I have 2 cams, front and rear, but no sync. So if I ever need to save vid from both to prove fault in an accident or other issue, I'd have to manually sync and that would only be visual. I like the time code thing. Also, how are these cams (Garmins) holding up when a vehicle is, let's say, parked in a location where the sun is beating down right on it, through the windshield and it gets very hot? Is if fair to say it's best to just unhook them in that case? The 2 cams that I have, I've already had to change the internal battery and now, I have to do it again as the crap lithium replacements (cheap Chinese junk batteries) have failed due to this heat situation. ??????

  • @Technorv

    @Technorv

    Lots of good questions! For the connectivity to the cameras to your phone. The camera itself will produce a wifi signal that you can connect to via your smartphone. The distance before you begin to lose that connection is about 30FT. As long as you are within that 30 FT you are close enough to use the Live View feature. When it comes to the Dash cams holding up to direct sunlight, this is not typically recommended for several reasons. The device can get to hold and will need to cool off before returning to regular use. All cell phones have the same feature. Plus the suction mounts can be weakened when sitting in direct sunlight for long periods of time. If you are driving this will probably never be an issue. Of course if you are parked somewhere for a week we recommend you take down your electronic devices and store them out of the sun to help protect them.

    Which "resolution" setting do you recommend that will provide the clearest license plate numbers/letters, 1440 @ 30 frames per second or 1080 @60 frames per second? I'm guessing 1080@60 fps. Incidentally, I bought this product several years ago thanks to this video. Long time subscriber. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada.

    I have big problems connecting my phone to this thing. The DC57 seems to show up twice in the list of what items are connected to my phone. It’s very hard for me to connect to the camera and I have yet to do it without connection being lost or being asked 5 times if I want to connect to the camera. This happens both when I want to review files or when I try to download files. I need someone to spoonfeed me instructions on how to connect to this thing for good without any issues.

    I'm like you, my Garmin 57 is installed. I start my car & the Dash Cam simultaneously. When I stop driving & remove the ignition the Dash Cam stops recording & turns off. I don't have a so-called "Smart" phone so I have no need for the "wifi" feature. I especially like the 6 sided magnetic mount. If you carefully remove it from the windshield by pulling on the part that holds the magnetic, next time the camera will be in the same exact position - just DON'T pull on the camera when you're installing or removing the Dash Cam from the windshield.

    Back in September 2023, I was involved in a 13 mph accident when the stoplight changed the the car/driver on my left changed lanes & hit my front left wheel/fender/headlight housing & bent the lower control arm, strut, & damaged the hub wheel bearing - total cost to repair my car was $4,587.xx all paid for by the other driver's insurance because the dashcam footage proved conclusively the other driver crossed into my lane - we were both starting to move forward when the stoplight turned green. The dashcam footage was the only "witness". The dashcam got knocked out of it's magnetic mount so there was no footage AFTER impact. The dashcam never clearly recorded the other car's license plate # even though it was a clear, sunny, middle of the day accident. Fortunately, the other driver did the right thing & pulled over - we then exchanged insurance information. Without the dashcam footage I would have had an out-of-pocket expense to pay to repair my car. I didn't have Collision coverage on my old 2009 Toyota Yaris. I was disappointed with the dashcam for 2 reasons: #1 It ddidn't record the other vehicles License Plate # with any clarity. #2 It got knocked out of its magnetic mount on impact so there was no footage AFTER impact when it could have captured the license plate #.
