Garlic harvest 2024 - and an update from Mike!

Rust has cut short the garlic season slightly but today I manage to dig up a reasonable harvest. It's been one of those strange but wonderful weeks so I catch you up on various adventures as I dig up the last of the leeks: spoiler alert - it includes a 'stray duckling'! And, as promised, we pay a quick visit to Mike to see how his new venture is going - he's made quite a difference already!

Lovely garlic & leek harvest jane, that duckling looked so cute hope it found its way safely back to its family, mikes plot is looking so much better already such a huge growing space cant wait to watch when the pond is uncovered. Looks like you had a beautiful day out with lovely food too.

I was half hoping we would have to adopt the duckling and bring it up with the chickens ... but really I 'm pretty sure it's mum would have been on the lookout so hopefully all is well. It's going to be fun rediscovering the pond - I wonder what else is in there - we should have a poll! Thank you.

The garlic you harvested in the first pallet collar is Cadours And the second pallet collar is Lautrec pink Garlic. (we bought it together in Malvern 2022/23) a lovely harvest! Kinda glad!!! Saves me sending you the garlic I grew for you 😂😂

Aha! I knew there was a Cadours there somewhere - where on earth did I get Garcia from? I’m just so pleased they haven’t been hit by the rotten allium leaf miner - let’s hope they haven’t gone for the elephant garlic instead! Thanks Danny x

Great harvest Jane! I must admit mine was better last year due to the colder winter. Not a lot of mine split this time as it wasn't too cold but mainly wet. However the unsplit garlics still make good eating!! Mike has worked so hard already on that plot, can't wait until the first plants go in. Happy gardening x

I think the damp winter is to blame for so many things - let's not mention the slugs! Yes they are just as tasty even if they haven't split aren't they - I roasted the tiny ones whole the other day and they were delicious! It will be great if Mike can get some stuff in this year - he's already talking about Christmas potatoes! Thanks Jenny.

Better late than never on those Garleeks! You have a longer season than I do. Those garlics look great even though you had rust. Wow Mike's new plot is coming along....you can see the bones of it now.

I'm so tempted to get stuck in on Mike's plot but it's quite a busy time all around - he's done a great job so far! The garleeks are going in this afternoon - we shall see what happens. The garlic looks fine now it has been cleaned up - they would have grown a bit more if they'd stayed in but the rust was getting quite bad - there's always something! Thanks Robin x

Nice harvest of garlic to be honest I got one bulb this year, not sure what happened to the rest. It was a very nice bulb but I don't think it will.last us a year. Love Mike's new plot he's made lots of progress. Kind of feels like a treasure hunting uncovering the different things.

I was really well behaved at GW - although once I heard about Kerry's bargains I wish I'd stayed longer! The duckling was put straight out into the back garden and was last seen going through the gate back up on to the canal - I did search later on but there was no sign of it so I hope it found it's family! I'm actually getting quite excited about Mike's garden now - it's taken a while but it's winning me round! Thanks Linda - hope you've been enjoying some of today's lovely sunshine x

I’d say your harvest was a success Jane, I planted 22 and only got 5 to harvest. Thats 5 more than I’ve ever got before though so it’s a win. I will use these to re sow this autumn. If they had rust is it ok to replant them dyu think? Also yay to Mikes he’s really cut that plot down now and so you can see what’s what. Still a lot of work to do though. Will be interesting to see how he progresses. X go Mike 👊🤜🏻x🤛🏻

I think as long as the cloves are sound they should be okay to replant but I must admit I've never tried. Well done on getting five - I bet you'll treasure them! Mike is itching to do more but still has a few weeks to go at work - once that finishes I think there will be so much progress - fingers crossed! Thank you.

Great harvest there Jane! Cute duckling. We just pulled up our first and probably best row - Provence Wight -S.N. Out of 7 we planted, one didn't sprout, one was the size of a large marble and the stem had rotted, we had another that was ok, slightly bigger but still small and the rest were small but have some nice cloves. I don't hold much hope for the other varieties in the other rows as the stems are like spring onions but hey ho at least we got something! lol These and another row were sowed from last year cloves so at least it was kinda free crops. Wow what a difference already to that plot! Well done Mike! How many reels of strimming wire has he gone through so far? I am sure the chickens would love a trip there. Take care. x

Hello Jane, Another garlic harvest!!! Seems to me you had a wheelbarrow full of garlic that covered the entire table. This year looks much like the 2022 harvest. Fewer garlics those two years. Did you plant new varieties and were any of them your own replanted? I planted about 150 cloves last October. 7 varieties a couple new ones. I have been taking ALL of the big cloves to plant for bigger bulbs. I cook with and use all the smaller one. The goal should be reached in a year or two. The goal being to sow all my own garlic without buying any garlic seed stock except for new interesting varieties. Also to grow all the garlic I need for a year from the garden. I am getting closer every year. Thank you for this video you have several great garlic videos. Peace and blessings for you and Mike. The new plot is making big strides in the right direction. Steven

That was the year! The thing is that harvest was so good that anything else seems a bit paltry now! I really can't remember which varieties are which but Danny from GrowUp has reliably informed me that one lot was Cadours and another was Lautrec - I think. There were a couple of cloves from last years bulbs but again - not sure of the varieties. I'm really hoping to get a bigger harvest again next year - I doubt it will be on your scale but I think with the extra plot we should have enough space! Thanks Steven.

Once the leaves are turning yellow they’re not going to provide the bulb with much more so when you see them dying back that’s the time to lift. Mine would have stayed in longer if it wasn’t for the rust. Try to nip off the scapes before they flower or all the energy will be diverted into seed making. Sounds like yours are ready - good luck!
