Garh Kundar (also known as Gadhkudhar) is known to be a small village near the city of Tikamgarh, which lies in Niwari district of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is named Garhkundar after the royal fort, or "Garh", of Kundar situated here. From the year 925 to 1507 AD, Garh Kundar fort witnessed a lot of battles and bloodshed. Yashovarma Chandel (925-940 AD) made this fort after conquering south western Bundelkhand. In the battle which took place between Prithviraj Chauhan and the Chandels in 1182 AD, fort commander Shayaji Parmar lost and the fort came under Prithviraj Chauhan. Then Rajput King Prithviraj Chauhan appointed Khetsingh Khangar as the ruler of this fort who later founded the Khangar Dynasty.
The fort is actually built at the hill top and has a total of five stories, out of which two are underground and three are located above it. The fort is made in such a way that it is clearly visible from 5 km but as you keep coming near it, the fort seems to be away from sight and not only that but the main road gets diverted to some other direction.

When the great king Prithviraj Chauhan lost to Mohammad Ghori in the year 1192 AD, then Khetsingh Khangar actually declared himself as the independent hindu ruler. In the year 1288 AD, the first Dynasty of Bundelas was established. Hemvati was married to Punyapal Panwar/Parmar. King Sohanpal was known to be the first King of Bundelas who died in the year 1299 AD. After him, his son King Sahjendra Bundela ruled from the year 1299 to 1326 AD. In the year 1507 AD, Bundela king Rudra Pratap Singh made Orchha as his new capital which is located on the banks of Betwa River which is now popular for Shri Ram Mandir.
The name ‘Kundar’ is known to be derived from ‘Kundarka’ (Kund + Arka, कुंड+अर्क). ‘Kund’ (कुंड) means ‘pond’ and Arka’ (अर्क) means ‘sun’. It is said that there was a pond in the village, and the people used to get rid of their skin diseases after taking a bath in the pond or the ‘Arka-kund’. The remnants of that pond can still be seen close to the temple of ‘Giddh vahini maa’ near the fort.
