Garden with Me: Changing the Pond Filter

A short garden-along as I complete one of the most interesting and gross tasks of maintaining my backyard garden: changing the pond filter.
Do you have a patio pond? What do you like about it? Let me know below!
_____
Having a pond used to seem like an unreachable thing for me - it felt like the kind of accessory a rich person has, and all of the equipment seemed very complicated. After building a small patio pond last year, I realized it is not as scary as it seems, and now I am pond-obsessed.
This pond sits on the edge of my patio and holds 100 gallons. It is made from a Rubbermaid stock tank that I got on sale at Fleet Farm early this spring. The bog filter is made from a cheap storage container from Menards and all of the material in the bog filter are things I had laying around - bricks, stone and pebbles.
The pond has become an integral part of having a healthy ecosystem in my garden: it collects rainwater and the fish create fantastic fertilizer. When I change out water, all of the outgoing water goes directly on the plants. I can also grow plants in the pond as well as in the bog filter. The running water attracts more bugs and birds, which is always a plus!
Thank you to Ozponds, who has fantastic tutorials on how to build bog filters. I highly recommend his videos!

Beautiful pond, I love the idea of using the fish poop in the water and filter to fertilize your plants. What kind of plant is the large lime green one to the left (your right) that grew its roots into the filter? Love it!

Thanks for watching! It's a canna - they make great "marginal" plants and I love them because they have such beautiful foliage and flowers. I always plant them to make my midwest garden feel a little tropical 😅 I always try to save a few of the rhizomes over winter, too.

@@goodenoughmn ok, thanks for letting me know! They do give off a tropical vibe you're right! I might have to try that in my pond!
