There's few pictures of my house and landscape when we moved in because it was so awful. We've got two Oak trees close to the front porch and immediately I started letting the leaves stay under them. Their growth has really kicked into gear and they provide great shade for the porch, making it more pleasant. I have limited funds and strength so I used limbs to designate the bed around them and started putting in plants I'd held in huge pots for years. The Hosta and ferns were already grown and took off! I've put in natives from plant rescues and found some that were still there despite previous mowing. It's not as tidy as your yard and definitely a work in progress but it's mine and I enjoy it. The birds sure enjoy the trees and the feeders and plants that's there for them. Our dog Molly is ageing too, her favorite spot is on the loveseat on the porch. Now if she could keep the squirrels away from the birdfeeder.... We have no need for turf and I have no desire to mow so we've left the natives for the wildlife. It's keeping the deer from eating my Hosta for now. Would I like more resources and more control? Perhaps, but pleased overall. Your's is looking great!

I agree; my garden is actually on its 2nd version of my masterpiece. (😩🤦🏾) This before and after, as well as your discussion on the path systems; has really helped me get a handle on tackling my backyard, which has a slope. I already have a few berms to control water flow; but now see that with paths, patios and plantings; that I can really control the amount of erosion. I always just left the backyard alone to the kids and dog. I am taking it back over now. Lord, help me now! 😩

The colors and textures in your gardens are so enjoyable to see. I live in a new housing area and most people here do not have one bush in their backyards. How can they enjoy their patio looking at a bare yard with an ugly board privacy fence? It amazes me because of my difficulty in finding plants the last few years. My yard, both front and back are filled with plants and almost looks out of place on my street. I've noticed that many new developments where every tree and bush has been cleared, people have the few cheap shrubs and one puny crepe myrtle tree that the builder planted in the front. Why do you think this is the trend these days? I miss hearing the birds chirping in my garden but they are just passing through my yard as there is nothing else for them in the area.

@@teresacleckner7994 Thank you so much for your kind words! I've watched sooo many hours of videos, signed up for Learn to Garden, and have had several consultations with Jim. Last year was my first year starting annuals from seed. I made a few mistakes. This year I did much better and everything is looking great. I'm working on adding lots of natives and non-natives. I had so many pollinators in the garden last summer. I hope to attract even more this year. I really didn't know much about viburnums until I started watching Jim's videos. I love them! So far I have four different varieties and plan to add at least two more. Happy gardening! ☺🌺🌻🌱🦋🐛🐝🐦

If your house faces south, would NOT sacrifice the natural sunlight by putting a covered porch across the whole front. That porch roof would be right above the windows and dramatically reduce your light. Maybe if you have tons of sunshine exposure from all other directions....
