I haven't featured my G Scale Garden Railway on the channel for a while now - so long in fact that many of you may not be aware I even have an outdoor model railway. I had a chance to run the layout earlier this week (after tidying things up of course) and so I thought I'd take you on a tour of the garden railway and the fictional history of the line that exists in my head... some suspension of disbelief may be required.
The Pevensey Light Railway is a small narrow gauge railway running along a short section of the Sunshine Coast. The original line ran from the Harbour to the nearby fishing village of Pevensey Bay with an extension to the nearby castle being built once the railway began being used for passenger services. It is this section that survives today thanks to the preservation society although the eventual aim is to restore the full line if planning permission can be obtained.
Currently the Pevensey Light Railway operates with two locos, an 0-6-0 steam engine Cambrai and 0-4-0 diesel 3005. It is hoped more locos will join the railway in the near future with several projects in the pipeline. The railway has adopted a somewhat "down at heel" charm although now services are operating regularly again the preservation society are hoping to improve the presentation of the railway and it's stations in order to put the Pevensey Light Railway on the map.

    Great to see the g scale railway back, it looks fantastic and I love the back story to it as well, every railway layout should have a backstory, and the locos and the stock really suit the railway as well 😀

    Thanks Adam! I do like creating fictional history and backstories for layouts too. It just makes them feel a bit more real and it sometimes helps justify why certain decisions have been made. Hopefully it won't be too long before the next garden railway video! Thanks for watching 😃

    I've always thought garden railways looked fun, and as relatively simple as this layout is, it looks great! I love all the flowers and little bushes; they make it look so natural. Nice Video!😃

    It's definitely from a normal model railway. You have to deal with all the elements and maintain it just to keep things running. In a lot of way it's more like running a real railway but that's part of the appeal! And yes, having all the bushes and flowers around it too really does make it feel much more natural too! Thanks for watching 😃

    Charming Little Railway would be the understatement of the day, I'd say. Disappearing in and out of the foliage is great. Creates the illusion of having traveled somewhere. I'd sure like to see more of this one.

    Thanks! That was definitely my aim with the railway - and in fact all my layouts. I like to be able to believe they go somewhere, so having it disappear round corners and between plants was the best way of achieving that. Thanks for watching 😃

    That's interesting, I would have thought converting it to battery power would make it more smooth, being less susceptible to stalling. Mine must be close to 20 years old now and still going strong. Thanks for watching 😃

    I have a name for the diesel locomotive if you don’t mind, the name “hussler” seems appropriate since it hauls freight for the railway. The idea of giving names to locomotives is personally a charming feature to a railway cause it shows the respect and care taking the workers have for the locomotives that run the railway non-stop.

  • @ThatModelRailwayGuy

    @ThatModelRailwayGuy

    Ooh nice idea! I'll definitely keep that in mind as I do want to name all the locos eventually once the railway has been tidied up a bit. Thanks for watching 😃

    Just loved that video. Very interesting and nice to watch. I take it it’s 12v ac it runs on ? How did it run so smoothly on dirty track or did you clean it first ? I would love a garden railway like that. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻 All the best Duncan

  • @ThatModelRailwayGuy

    Hey Duncan, glad you enjoyed it. The layout runs on DCC and I did clean the rails in this instance as the layout hadn't been used over the Winter. That said, I probably won't need to clean them for a while now as the locos are pretty good at picking up power even when the rails get a little bit of grime on them. Generally I give them a very quick clean about once a month and focus on any sections where locos are struggling in particular. Thanks for watching 😃

    Haha! I quite like the overgrown look in some places - it reminds me of the Talyllyn when the preservation society was just getting started. Yes I think the steam loco is based on a French engine - it's made by LGB are most of their stuff seems to be continental in theme. Thanks for watching 😃
