I have grown a honeysuckle in the corner of my fence to avoid insight from the passing side walk/ bicycle road. It grows in a fan fashion, covering a big "V". It works very well and the night aroma when it blooms is worth waiting for :)

I need to paint my fence this year, so I decided to cut it down completely, 20 cm from the ground. I did it in mid-April. This way, I will kill two birds with one stone: painting the fence (3 coats behind the plant) and rejuvenating the honeysuckle. No bloom this year, but you can't have it all.

We have a few neighbors who are downright voyeurs. We had to build - and add on to - a privacy fence. The lattice was not enough as they would stare through it. I added old sheer curtains, which look a little odd but it had to be done. One neighbor even complained when he lost his view of us! We have a short growing season so can't rely on plants until later in the summer. Good fences make good neighbors!!

Over many years I've bought and read lots of gardening magazines and books which seldom mention anything or little of screening and privacy especially relating to our modern built up dynamic Cities, Towns and infrastructures. Busy too now the Suburbs, and villages with more people needing house extensions. With building plots in high demand owners sell off bits of garden to individuals at a premium. Buyers desperate to build. Outdoor private areas, with our gardens now overlooked more than ever before has made privacy oftentimes a luxury in places. Becoming sought after and precious. I've also viewed lots of Gardeners' changing television presenting styles and many really good gardening TV shows. Honestly that's the first time I've watched a video of any practical use or pragmatic depth whatsoever advising on the subject of screening and privacy for gardens and other outdoor spaces. If, of course, and I'm sure ' The Middle-Sized Garden' KZread video on Screening and Privacy is a taster of what's in the new book just out; then it's going to prove usefull to very large numbers of all types of people from differing backgrounds. All basically looking for solutions to now quite commonly held challenges of privacy lots of us have but don't know how best nor where to start with in order to meet such often seemingl puzzling demands.

I so appreciate all these suggestions. I have wire fencing near the house on both sides in the back garden, it's rather ugly fencing with no privacy. So I am adding wattle panels to them that I build from garden branches I've pruned. The panels are easy to make and can be as big as you like, my sister says it looks like a Hobbiton fence 😁

My trick as I watch the hedges grow tall enough is I wear a large-brimmed sunhat pulled down and sunglasses so in that way even though I can be seen I can't see who is seeing!

I see your new book available on Kindle ... Will definitely buy today! I live in a single storey home with a lovely front porch for lounging but there is a two-storey home across my open lawn and about 100 ft away. My neighbours seldom come outside but her cats watch us all day! Living close to the sea with lots of wind and shallow stony soil not many large plants grow quickly except climbers which I fear would rot the millwork of my porch so I look forward to finding out how I can address my privacy problem.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I started watching your channel in December. In one episode, you encouraged viewers to go ahead and mulch. As you so elegantly said, by mulching in winter it would have time to break it down into a lovely soil by spring. I thought you were crazy, but I listened. I dragged my husband to the garden center and on New Years Day, we mulched our flower beds. Today, I began planting new perennials and annuals in our beds. To my delight, we indeed, had the loveliest soil. I now know what will be on my Christmas list each year - mulch!

I was going to put a privacy screen up a 6 foot lattas with a small bed for a climbing plant but it sounds like it might fall down in the wind due to not being able to anchor it down 12 inches because it's on solid big boulders. When it comes to screens with gaps of any kind that can be seen through, and this trick even works on wire mesh, consider painting the screen a very bright and light colour. White works best, but any bright and light colour will do the trick. If you paint it a dark colour it makes the brighter lighter areas behind the screen stand out and become visible, but painted a light colour the screen itself pops and becomes hard to see past as everything behind it fades into the distance. You can even make the screen a one-way view by painting it light on one side and dark on the other.

I’m working on this now. I have a small/average sized town garden 1/4 of a mile from the coast and I’m overlooked on all three sides by a mix of 2 and 3 storey small businesses, terraced housing and flats; ALL with smokers casually coming out at 20 minute intervals and deciding I’m their entertainment! So, I’ve hired a landscaper and have already put up raised trellis above my garage to block the two storey business overlooking my deck and now ready to plant mature pleached trees for the 3 storey flat side and a couple of spreading/bushy native trees for the terraced housing side. I’ve yet to decide on pleach / tree type so would really welcome suggestions, please. Robinia is popular, I know, but, Beech and Hornbeam are also on my list too. As to the two trees: Red Hawthorn, ‘Paul’s Scarlett,’ the English Rowan tree are top at the moment, with Maple and Amelanchier also favourites. Sun-wise, I’m extremely lucky as 3/4 of my garden receives full sun throughout the day and shade is ‘thrown,’ away behind the sundeck and disappears either side until early evening, when it creeps West - East across the garden. While privacy is undoubtedly my main aim, I’m also hoping to benefit from seeing more small birds nesting and feeding in my garden, rather than herring gulls and pigeons!

All your tree choices sound excellent - I really like pleached hornbeam - just check that your soil type is good for maples as I've had a few die on me - if you've got maples in the area, that's probably fine, but they don't seem happy in my garden.

I'd build vertical posts, as in a balustrade and grow climbers up it to filter the wind. Needs good soil preparation, so the plants wouldn't dry out. Plant privet or a slim variegated holly? Great for hedge nesting birds too. Good luck. 🌿👍👩‍🌾

I got grape vines growing thru my 4' tall chain link fence, nothing man made could look so beautiful, just wish I had added on 2' of lattice on the top so the vines would make it 6' tall. I can add it but it takes time for the vines to grow. I'm in USA, Michigan, vines mysteriously started growing about 10 years ago. One the 3 bordering neighbors was a snooty old coot that kept cutting it down but she's gone now. The new neighbors don't cut it down and I'll add the 2' lattice before it grows.

@@TheMiddlesizedGarden I'd have never known it as I don't see it anywhere around here. Hard to believe when about 90% of everybody would like a privacy fence, and these are free. I think it would take about 3 - 5 years to fully envelope a chain link fence as it has on mine. Winter months it is just a big bare vine, but who's in the yard in the throws of winter anyway.

Also to note I had put 4' high PVC white lattice over some of the chain link fence but once the vines thicken they can't be seen anyway. Just saying that it could be made higher by adding on to the height of the fence using various fence materials, might look sloppy before the vines grow but once they are it all you can see is the leafy vines. The way I know it is grape vine is that there are many many clusters of white grapes, a good clue:)

A time and place for all things. Yes, sometimes we wish a bit of privacy, maybe dealing with a situation and you don't wish a disturbance, I still think a hardy tree is best or a wall, it can also act as a windbreak! Careful garden planning from the start is great, unfortunately things change, a neighbour moves away and there is new adjustments. What about a good sized all-weather garden umbrella, those you can move around. As always thanks for your informative discussion, maybe I have a spot where my neighbours feel uncomfortable and I can look to see what changes I can make. It is not always the other party that's at fault!

In some places, tall conifers are not allowed. It may be better to screen a small area of your garden, perhaps where you sit, with planting or a privacy screen because a screen that is close to you can often be lower. If you try to make your garden private by planting tall trees all around the boundary, you can lose too much light. But, of course, it varies so much from garden to garden, so only you can make the best decision for you.

Hi I want to plant an apple tree near my house. Should I worry about it affecting my foundations?

  • @TheMiddlesizedGarden

    @TheMiddlesizedGarden

    3 жыл бұрын

Fruit trees don't develop large penetrating roots in the same way that say, a large evergreen tree might. So you should be fine. We have had two crab apples planted very close to an old wall for 10 years and there is no sign of root disruption. It's good practice, however, not to plant a tree right up against a house wall. There is a rough rule that suggests planting a tree three quarters of its eventual height from a building. So an apple tree predicted to grow 12-20ft tall should probably be planted about 8ft-13ft from a house. So if it's going to grow 3-4 metres high, plant it 2-3 metres from the house.

I did say that it's important to check the council rules on heights of fences, hedges etc where you are. And I repeat that in the book (several times), and also in the accompanying blog posts. It is a really important point, because it's a major cause of neighbourhood disputes - but there is little more I can do than to state it clearly in every blog post and video I do on garden privacy, which I have always done and will always continue to do. Of course, people don't always hear or see everything that's said or written in a blog post or video, but there's not much I can do about that.

Thank you! Though I feel I should say that the 'old' format of finding information used to be paying upfront (ie for a book or magazine, which often also had ads) while the 'new' format is 'free' in that anyone can access information without paying, but options for paying are offered to you via ads and products for sale. So we do now have a choice between paying upfront and paying via ads or products - but because all information costs money to produce, we should expect to 'pay' somewhere down the line. Or we'll only be offered information produced by people who want to produce it without being paid in any way...which could be somewhat dodgy....! However, I think what you're probably referring to is balance...that people are prepared to have a certain amount of advertising or products mentioned, but no-one wants to be bombarded.

It's a good place to start. If, for example, they have a peep hole, then that's different as you wouldn't see them, but with a normal window, you'd usually be able to see anyone if they could see you. Of course, if someone is really determined to spy on you, then they will, but with most garden privacy issues, it's just a question of light screening so people don't make eye contact and unless they really peer at you, they won't really be able to see what you're doing..
