    Eley is the only one that does not restrict flow. OTOH plastics got automatic valve, which is nice (but restricts flow even more)

    I had to look up ASMR because I had never heard of it before. It brought up a KZread playlist of a Russian woman whispering and speaking very softly. I couldn't take it for more than a few seconds, I had to come back and listen to the Eley quick connects again, so much better IMO.

    Just ordered a 4 pack of the Eley. Thanks for the video. I have been playing the same game for years. I am a guy with “way too many hoses” as well. I live in PA, have an old 33,000 gallon in ground pool, inflatable hot tub, chicken coop, work on cars, motorcycles, etc. I have installed outdoor hot water hook ups so I can run my power washer, etc, all winter if needed. So I have been battling these cheap quick connects for years. The cheap metal ones do have o rings, they are just inside where they are hard to remove. There are so many cheap ones that look the same, but don’t work together, so I have plenty of miss matches. I tried servicing the corroded cheap metal ones in my ultrasonic, finding the brass plating comes off the cheap metal underneath that then corrodes faster. Can’t wait to get these, they are exactly what I was looking for!

    Thanks for this video. On your recommendation, I bought some Eley quick-connects and connected a spigot to a 3/4" 50' hose, and then again to a 3/4" 100' hose. I also got Eley's nozzle setup and added a quick-connect to that as well. NO LEAKS. None. Not even a little bit. After decades of dealing with quick-connects that invariably leak, these are so satisfying. They are very beefy brass tools that should last generations with minimal care. Thanks again for your recommendation.

    I had my entire house and shop on OG quick connects. I bought an Eley hose reel in 2019 and it came with a 4 pack of quick connects. Since I had the OG's, I put the Eley's in a drawer and didn't use them immediately. After trying them one day, it's a night and day difference. The Eley's are smoother, easier to connect and don't restrict the flow. I've since replaced every OG quick connect with an Eley.

    I think the reason they are that size is in the way they connect it's so there's no edge to blow the hose off that was one of my concerns when I seen how easy they come apart but maybe being that diameter they won't blow off as I originally thought. Cool channel.

    It’s a function of size, pressure and length. For the lawn, max flow is first based on meter size and pressure. Really depends on the meter you have which could be found out from your utility. Depending on pressure at the meter, a 3/4 meter could be as high as 30gpm versus 50gpm on a 1in meter. You can do a flow test at the spigot using a short piece of hose, a 5 gal bucket and a stop watch on your phone. Time how long it takes to fill the bucket and covert to gals per min. That is maximum. Keep in mind that hose has higher pressure loss per foot(thus loss in flow)than a rigid pipe. Run a pipe sized to match the meter to a strategic location with a spigot so a shorter amount of hose could be used than have hundreds of feet of hose. Seen that on golf courses before. Hope some of this made sense. Good luck.

    The plastic Melnor ones are nice in that they shut off the flow when you disconnect them, but that design really restricts the water flow. And I did have some of the male connectors break within about a year. What i decided to go with are the brass connectors from Harbor Freight. They look similar yo the ones you show from Obsessed Garage, but they only have 3 ball bearing. They certainly arent at the level of the Eley connectors, but the HF ones are about $8 for 4 male connectors and 2 female connectors. So i was able to get 4 packs (16 males for various attachments/nozzles and 8 females for spigots and hoses). Ive had a couple of the connectors start leaking, but theyre ao inexpensive that i can just swap them out. I'd like to go with the Eley's, but it would cost me substantially more money. I did get the Eley hise reel (loaded it with 100 feet of Flexzilla hose) and it is wonderful! It blows away all of the plastic reels you can find at the big box stores.

    I've been using the brass ones off of Amazon. I think I've got 20 already. I've been heavy using them in the summer especially the last month and so far so good after a year. I've got them hooked up to my pressure washer., Spray bottles, etc. My problem is is Iive got more of the male ends laying around than I do the female. I wish they just sold the female connects which they don't. I also pinch my flexzilla hoses to shut the water off to release the quick connect but noticed my flexzilla hose is starting to bubble/damage from me doing this so I've ordered 2 hose cut offs..

    I hate the plastic ones. They crack and leak for me. All the brass and stainless steel ones have the same mechanism and quite a few of them are actually compatible with each other. You must have fairly hard water. When they start sticking soak then in CLR for a couple hours and they will be good as new. The ones I use look like the second ones shown, they are $3ish at Lowe's. Those Eley one's look very well made but with as many as I have that's nearly $300 in quick connects. FWIW I'm able to connect them one handed but it's definitely not easy. There is also a version that stop the flow of water when disconnected. Those are my preference. Lowe's sells them with the pressure washer fittings, just slightly more than the $3 version and they are sold in sets. As far as the comment on flow. I did some testing a while back as I got some larger hoses and using larger fittings, etc. I found that it was the water spigots that limited the flow, not the hose or hose fittings. I replaced all my hose spigots on my house but found there are very few on the market that will flow more that 10-12 gpm @60psi. Part of this comes down to the fact most houses are built with 1/2in plumbing to the hose spigots, and even if 3/4in is used the connection inside the valve will neck down to less that 1/2in at the valve seat.

Same experience with the brass ones form the bog box store too lol Love the stainless of the OG, but the Eley is some legit stuff and I’m converted all the Eley now. To OG’s defense, their stuff is for car washing and the diameter isn’t a concern since that crowd of using pressure washing. If Eley made them In stainless steel, best of all worlds then!

    Correct me if I'm wrong but uvhave to turn the hose water off first to disconnect & reconnect? The one we have, u can turn the water off at the connector. Its great for us because we have a boat that we park outside our fence & our hose is inside the fence. Then we only have to walk around the fence once to turn it on & once to turn it off. We can use the sprayer to rinse the boat down, then turn water off at connector, pop hose sprayer off & quick connect it to the motor to flush. Same thing around back for the pool. I can use the sprayer to squirter things off & then disconnect & reconnect to hook up Vacuum without having to walk back & forth multiple times to the actual hose handle

    Flow rate will change with any/every change in pipe/hose/fitting diameter. The difference will be very small if comparing 5/8" to 3/4" diamter hose, and the difference will be more noticable between 1" and 1/2" diameter hose. The smallest restriction determines flow rates so use the smallest diameter of any fitting in the hose/fitting combination in your calculations. Flow rate will not increase by replacing 5/8" hose with 3/4" or 1" hose if the pipe feeding the spigot is 5/8".

    How are those Eley quick connects holding up since you have had them? I assume since you have them everywhere they re left out in the elements year round. Are they still smooth to operate? Orings leak or have you maintained them with the grease etc? Have the brass become pitted in from continuous use?

  • @Alejandro_C62
    @Alejandro_C622 жыл бұрын

    Any reduction in size will limit flow, everything else being equal. The smaller the diameter, the higher the friction loss given a similar water pressure, generally 40psi from a hydrant. Also have to consider the distance of the hose line. The longer the line, the higher the friction loss the less your output 🚒.

    There is a huge difference between stainless steel and brass. The surface corrosion that is causing the brass to bind does not occur with stainless steel.

  • @MDC_1985

    @MDC_1985

    Жыл бұрын

    It all depends on what grade of brass you are using. And yes, Ideally stainless is the way to go but the reality is that stainless has drawbacks as well and they typically are related to cost. Its often more difficult to work with and its lack of malleability sometimes will require different construction methods (ie you can't swage it or use deformative manufacturing processes). That being said.... In my opinion, the Obsessed Garage connectors have one major drawback versus the Eley quick connects: Flow rate. The eley connectors have a 3/4 pass through. Sure, I'd prefer that the Eley connectors were stainless so I would be 100% certain that they will last a lifetime.... but until someone comes out with a true 3/4 stainless quick connect, the Eley is king of the hill, in my opinion. To Summarized: Stainless is a more desirable material in terms of durability and corrosion resistance.... but Eley has the better design.

    So the "brass option from the big box store" (the 2nd one reviewed) are not solid brass, but brass plated. And that is not dirt in it. I can see by the color that it's corrosion (brass does not corrode). I tried those they they were so badly corroded after only about a year I could not get the female end off the hose with a couple of channel locks. I tore one up trying, and saw that it's silver under the brass plate (likely aluminum). Those are "no go" in my book.

    @@TheLawnTools absolutely, correct. I had one leak, but it was over tightened. In the long run I would just invest in the Eley and buy a couple at a time. I use them at both ends of the hose so I would need 4 of each to start with. It’s kind of like shoes, if you buy a quality pair they will last you a long time. Hopefully Nike will release a new pair of Volt colored shoes that I can’t live with out. 😉

    Are gardena quick connects any good? Looks like they limit the flow a bit, but don't know if that matters.

    When watering garden plants with garden hose and nozzle , then flow rate doesn't matter. But flow rate is important when watering lawn with a lawn sprinkler. A Quick connect with a 0.75"opening has TWICE the water flow rate of a 0.5" opening, allowing you to water a larger area at a time.

    You don't have to be a rocket scientist, the bigger the hole diameter the more water flow you're going to get. It's just that simple😁

    You told us yourself. The one that the commenter had for 10 years was probably because they replaced the gasket when it leaked. As you mentioned, you tightened it not realizing there even was a gasket & broke the plastic. Basic user error. Just CHECK GASKETS & REPLACE them. Lol. Before you try tightening plastic/metal objects. Also why go through all this. Just get drip irrigation. Its awesome it's easy. Dont have to keep buying replacements. Raindrip I use. Had for year. Never replaced anything. Never have to hand water. Just change the timer on rain days. Otherwise setup once & done until putaway in fall. No brainer to me.

    ELEY female fittings do not have the auto shutoff option, like the melnor. If ELEY offered a female fitting that shut off the water flow when disconnected I would change in a minute.

    So for northern Arkansas lawns which get their water requirements from rain most of the year, is in-ground irrigation not worth it?

  • @lefttool7928

    Yes that’s the main reason. Most years we get plenty of rain thru early summer. And burmuda doesn’t need much. Also doing any digging around here sucks. Mostly hard/rocky soil.

    Everything in life requires maintenance, silicone grease for all of your water exposed connectors and they will function perfectly and last those 10+ plus years regardless if their design. About $5 per half ounce at the box store, which will last years as the application required is only a thin coat, lasting the season. You have invested more on your connectors and hoses than renting a "ditch witch" for a day, buying rainbirds, soakers, monitors and installing your our sprinkler system yourself would have cost.... 🦉💦
