My number 1 garden rule is to “not marry my plants.” If they fail to perform as expected or they do not give me joy, out they come!

I do the same thing! For 2 years I nursed a beautiful yellow bare root rose and it wasn’t blooming much. So when I pruned her in January I told her that if she didn’t perform that year she was outta there! So I kid you not, that spring she was glorious! Talk to your plants even if it’s a reprimand! 😂😂😂

My garden rule when planting my pots is to use a coffee filter in the base - not rock or broken pot pieces!!! Works like magic - then always wear a hat !

The garden design rule that I always follow, and would recommend, would have to be to find the “You” in your garden. Don’t copy what everyone else is doing! Find inspiration in the things you love and give them a home in your landscape ✌️. Zone 9a

I live in a heavily forested area in the Blue Ridge Mountains. One of my key garden design principles is restraint. I don’t want to introduce lots of plants that are out of context in this setting. A big go-to for me is salvias. Pollinators love it but deer don’t eat it. I do my annuals up on our deck.

The added bonus of “you ask we answer” is wonderful. The street view also is great, really shows plant growth as design fills in. Thank you.

I garden in Ontario Canada zone 5b and the principles I find most helpful when designing my garden is ‘right plant, right place’, repetition, succession planting, selecting a colour palette and having it flow throughout the garden beds, negative space to provide moments of rest, hardscaping that works well with the style of my home, clean and defined edges and using vertical space for climbers. I really like adding clematis for added interest and structures (trellis). I’ve learned so many of these principles from you and other talented garden designers. 💚

Linda...Before watching your channel, I never named different areas of my garden. Not anymore. 😂 Now, I have my tropical bed, the drought tolerant bed, the perennial flowers bed, my conifer bed, and the no-fuss bed. 😊

I started naming all my areas after watching and reading UK gardeners . I have went as far as having a " entrance courtyard garden", the "potager entrance courtyard garden" , back courtyard woodland garden ... 😂 I love it !!!

Just can’t believe how much the garden is growing. The grass is growing as rapidly as the flowers.

I "rescued" one of these Texas sage topiaries trees from Home Depot. I looked so bad and was in the clearance isle for 14 bucks. Some thing about it spoke to me and I brought her home and named her Hope. Hope has lived with me in Minnesota for 3 years and we like each other very much!

I'm gardening in zone 4a in the Adirondacks (sometimes zone 3). I have learned that shrubs and small trees are the backbone of my garden. I love seeing all the "volunteers" that pop up between the pavers that are set in stone dust, like columbine, spirea, creeping thyme and gloriosa daisies. I have multiple teardrop shaped gardens around a 12x12 pergola which is covered in wild grapevine and various clematis. The pergola overlooks a swimming pool that I had filled in. Now there are lilacs, roses, peonies, hydrangeas and lilies, my favorites. Goat's beard- I started with 3 and now there are maybe a dozen-but I love them. They are easy to pull up if unwanted. I also depend on hostas, ferns and astilbe to return after a hard winter. I want to "look up" in my garden and I planted Mme Julia Correvon Clematis to scramble up my Honey Locust tree outside my kitchen window. In July the tree is covered in deep red/pink blossoms. I'm in my early 70's and in addition to my dog Poppy and my family, my garden brings me great joy. My advice would be to go with what will thrive where you are and to design to bring the eye up!😊

I garden in 6b, where ajuga tends to be aggressive, at least on my property. It's pretty, but left to its own devices, it'll creep in everywhere. My gardening lesson is to plant what likes to grow in your garden and focus on repetitions of those plants.

5b here - Ajuga is not a pretty plant here. Not only did it spread with abandon, but the center of each plant lost foliage and looked ratty. It took several years to get rid of it.

Linda, you are really in your element in your new garden. It is wonderful to see you so happy, and inspiring to those of us who are creating our own gardens.

The garden is phenomenal! Cannot believe what you and your wonderful 'helpers' have accomplished in such a short time!

My only rule is that I don't use pesticides. Cardboard goes underneath the mulch which eliminates most of the weeding. I also do not use annuals anymore. Instead, I have planted flowering shrubs that bloom during different seasons.

I’ve added a lot more flowering shrubs, I find it a better investment than annuals. It’s also easier as I get older.

Having shrubs and perennials that give all season bloom is great but very zonal dependant. I sure wish I could do that, but zone 3 needs a bit of annual colour. 🌸🇨🇦

I always felt a sense of comfort when the view of Linda’s potager started a video from the fairytale house. The view from the street at the cottage on the hill gives me the same warm feeling. Love it and now it has me thinking about my own garden and what view I want visitors to remember. 😊

Love it!!! I feel like it would be really nice to repeat the same type of brick border that is around the boxwood on the slope, around the rose layer as well… so instead of a perfect half circle cut grass line, it would be a large brick border that would merge with the grass!

So refreshing to listen to someone tell us about garden hygiene, manicuring, tidying, neatness.... in the UK all we hear about is leaving your grass unmown is good for pollinators! It looks incredibly messy, overgrown, unkempt and the weeds (some call them wildflowers) self sow in your veg patch, block paving, flower borders and become an absolute nuisance. Even Monty Don said he stopped keeping a 'meadow' garden because the seed drift was invasive in the rest of his garden. I love what you've done Linda! A neatly kept garden shows care and pride.

My #1 garden rule when planting perennials is to use mostly evergreen types. This way the garden looks good all year. I'm in zone 8a, SC. My 2nd rule is to replace my pots that have finished flowering with those in flower (peonies get replaced by dahlias). The finished pots get put along a yet unplanted bed since the foliage still is pretty.

I dont garden much at all, yet! Im planning to in the very near future. Im learning so much from you and i believe going slow is one of the best lessons so far. Thank you for everything. Your garden is stunning. Your friend Kristine

My top design tip is to make sure to incorporate different foliage colors in my garden. It makes such a difference!

Hi Linda and Stewart! I like to experiment with new and different varieties ; if I see one has made it I will buy another but I like variety in the garden bc I want to see color all the time. I like to buy different varieties of the same plant and mix them up. I’m not an organized gardener. I grow what I like and what survives. It’s the same with containers. I buy what I like and not much matches. It goes together but not matching. Just not into it bc there is so much I like. I have used your tips to reveal more lower branches bc it allows more plants below the shrub. That’s a good one! Just hung some multi colored lights outside to create an eclectic look on the patio! It’s very cheerful at night ! Except for the mosquitos! Love the garden in front and Stewart is a very flattering videographer ! You always look great Linda! ❤️🥰7a New York

I just pruned my dappled willows in my front beds & I'm giggling at you Linda cuz you're saying out loud what I was thinking in my head while I was at work doing the exact same thing. I ithink a garden Design tip is always keep the plants that are doing well in your area. Reliable plants are important and mix and match perrannials, der anuals, shrubs, hat groundcover... Layering jeeps the whole picture interesting.

I think one of my garden design practices is to place a marker where I think I would like to plant say a tree or large shrub and look at it from inside my house, the porch, or a seating area outside. I the view is as important as the plantings. I also think that repeating plantings, or at least the colorways makes a garden look well designed and planned out. I love this vlog!

Have you noticed your neighbors being influenced to spiff up their gardens? I would think your beautiful yard would inspire a wave of improving landscapes.

What grows in abundance in my yard? WEEDS!! I have plenty! Lol Vinca vine which fell out of a hanging pot and has taken over a large part of my landscape ! I do love it but it’s really invasive!!

Like you Linda Ajuga comes and goes here in Colorado Zone 5. Surprisingly I have found Asters to be invasive! My tip is raised beds. We put in tinted cement beds 10 years ago and have loved them. Rock raised beds as well. Makes maintenance so much easier and they really are a work of art themselves. 😊💚

Linda, thank you for bringing our attention to the beauty of multi-stemmed small trees. It really is another form of topiary for its manicured look but allows light and form to shine through the foliage. To me, texture, shape and color contrast of foliage is even more interesting than flowers. It's got class and is achievable sophistication for our gardens.

Love your new garden, Linda. I play in my garden every morning before the heat kicks in on zone 9b. I have several Silverado sage in my garden some in ground and some in pots. The ones I ground are about 10’ high. They love rocky loose soil. They don’t need to be fertilized. They are heat tolerant and tolerate the Artic blast 2/3 years ago. I have a hedge of sage that bloom white. Absolutely beautiful! Always look forward to your videos.🪴☀️

My garden design includes having plants with sharp contrast in color through out the garden, repeating a certain color in annuals in the garden and then some of the same in my large blue pots. I love love my collection of hostas that also have mixed perrenials planted among them that will compliment my pink, white and purple color theme in the annuals and perennials against the lush hostas. I also add garden ornaments and pillows that compliment those same colors. Love love your gardens and all your articulate thoughtful advice and tips!!! Love your book too!!!

I planted 3 brunnera and I now have over 200. I love them and now have enough to share. Ajuga is spreading nicely but not over aggressive yet. I'm zone 6b in Missouri. My #1 garden rule is to not stress over weeds. It's been a struggle for me to adopt this rule but I'm so glad I did. Violets are a thug here and I used to stress terribly about them. I have a young boy that comes and pulls them for me now. I am so happy to see his face when he gets paid at the end of the morning.

I agree with you. Ajuga can be very invasive, but is easy to contain. I love it’s spring flowers and foliage. As it gets hot in July ,it begins to look dead

I am in Southern Ca. overcast most of May and June will be the same. In the 70s here for seems like months. More rain than i can ever remember.

Bugleweed as we call it here in the northeast spreads very nicely in my edge of the woods garden but yarrow is very invasive. Your garden looks wonderful and lush. Hard to believe you started from scratch the beginning of this year. Just remarkable. I have learned so many gardening ideas from you and Stuart does a great job with the camera. Keep the videos coming.

Beautiful! The street view today was absolutely gorgeous and I bet your neighbors love it! Zone 6b and a plant that takes over in my garden is Lambs Ear. I had it in an area several years ago and it took over! I tore it out and I STILL will find a start every year. A garden must rule for me is heavy mulch. I’m in Kansas and the winds can get fierce, so good mulch base is a must.

Linda, I too have an area in my garden where I’ve put a pot into it during the summer. In the fall I have a very unique silhouette of a dead tree that I’ve put into a pot filled with pea gravel. It gives height for the winter months.

My garden rule is to group things in threes or fives. Zone 9a here. Love your channel, Linda and Stewart!

I like the way Linda's garden is shaping up!

In my Mississippi garden vinca is very invasive. I love ajuga and have beautiful groupings in my garden. I do keep it contained. I love tropical plants such as elephant ears, canna lillies and ferns. As you can tell I like green colors with a splash of colors. Of course I have I have a flower bed of Zinnias marigolds for granddaughters to pick when they come to visit. I'm 76 so I lean towards containers and raised bed. I love boxwoods and topiaries. I've learned so much from you. Thank you. Because my soil is red clay

Hi Linda, lynne here from Canada zone 3/4 peonies do really well here because we have the cold period they need. When designing my garden I like to repeat things and also keep in mind Color and texture. Green, blue and red shaded foliage in shrubs give lots of interest.

Linda, I absolutely cannot express how much you have inspired me to enhance my yard! After an injury last year, I had lots of down time that allowed me to watch about all of your videos. I joined your channel a few months ago and love the extras! We made up for a missed year and worked hard to add boxwoods, nandina, gardenia, abelia, sunshine ligustrum, and lots of herbs. All from SL Plants. We have lived here over 20 years & tried many options. Most have done well. My husband is well into roses also. I have your book & journal on order. Hi Linda and Stewart. I love how all your plants are coming along nicely. For me it takes vision to create a lovely cottage garden as well as getting the plants that require less maintenance. Much love from Trinidad.

The view from the street is absolutely, totally gorgeous. A real show stopper. I love a sharp edge that follows the contour of the land. I'm in 7a and on a hill front and back. Hardscape, a mix of trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals. I like ajuga but have had the same problem with it just disappearing. A clump has established in a wet shady area but not invasive. Black eyed susan, japanese aneomes and rose of sharon can get aggressive and need to be regularly controlled. Astillbe, ferns, carex and mosses perform beautifully in large parts of my back garden that is shady and moist. Creeping jenny spreads but performs more as a living mulch.

Allium triquetrum, or 3 cornered leek, is my most invasive plant! It will literally take over any part of the garden, from deep shade to full sun. I love ajuga, one of those plant anywhere plants. It does die back in the summer, but there's always a patch left somewhere that I can steal a piece from to replant elsewhere. My design tip- if you see a plant that's self seeded and you can't identify it, leave it to see what it may be. This year I've managed to aquire an allium purple sensation, two allium christophii and some cornflowers that I've never planted but have been welcomed in my garden 😊. Wonder what other beauties might turn up next? Another great video guys x

My garden design tip is forming or defining flower beds where there is no question as to where to mow, especially if you have a lawn mowing service. Whether it be decorative block, brick, trench, etc. surrounding the beds, this keeps your garden beds safe & beautiful. Zone 8a GA

I have a pair of those "sleeves" and I love them. I was helping weed a community garden bed which had tall weeds and they kept my arms from getting scratched up. They were also cooler than a long sleeve shirt. And I looked cute ! Haha

When I saw the opening view of your home on the video I stopped the video and had a long, long look. It is a pleasure for the eyes to be sure. What a joy it must be for those in the neighborhood. I live in Zone 5 on a sand ridge and I have a plant that I enjoy which is invasive: creeping thyme!!! I have torn so much out but then this summer I thought I should use it to my advantage....I am going to use it for a ground cover. My garden principle is symmetry and hardscaping. Just prepurchased Claus Dolby's new book coming out in Sept. Your garden journal is next.

I loved the question of what to do with a hole in the garden when you pull the pots out!! I would definitely add a new pot into the hole with an evergreen for winter interest and also with little white twinkling fairy lights in the landscape if you decide to use your social patio with a fire table in the winter months.. I think it would be absolutely lovely to sit on the social patio with a warm beverage by a flickering fire and twinkling lights in the space ! Also by filling the hole with another pot it gives way to you changing the landscape back again for the warmer season

Great job. I have found Turks Cap to be invasive an Monkey grass somewhat also. I depend on year round green plants like Boxwoods and Yaupon holly shrubs and Perennials. Perennials that I love are coneflower, blackeyed susan, irises, gaura, red yucca, butterfly bush, Shasta daisies, roses, daylillies, phlox, hosta, japanese painted ferns, coral bells and artemisia and lambs ear. Guess I'm like you, I have a lot of favorites here in North Texas zone 7b. Keep up the good work Linda.
