    It's an excellent point about about checking buildings, shade and neighbouring structures. My little garden is SW facing and gets lots of sun, however about 20 feet away at the other side is an 8 foot wall separating my house from the neighbour. It gets no sun, to the extent that moss is prevalant at that side of the yard.

    Thanks C Smith. Many people forget about adjacent structures, buildings or trees causing shade. Even in south facing gardens. Glad you’ve picked up on this and shared your experience too! Happy gardening. Lee 🥷🌿👌

    Well I know where in our garden the sun is during the day but haven’t a clue which way our garden faces 🥱 I am now wondering how I have managed my garden over the years without your excellent gardening guides, I think my gardening has all been down to pot luck. Great that I am learning so much at last. Thanks Lee. Another great video. Mum 🥰🤗

    You’re welcome Mum. I’ll bring my compass after lockdown and we can work it out finally. Though watching where the sun rises and falls is probably the most useful. It’s not done your garden too much harm. It has always looked beautiful!! See you soon hopefully x

     @Garden Ninja Ltd An easy way to find out if you're a bit handy with Google: type in your home adress on Google maps and zoom in until you see your garden (satellite or not). Google maps should always automatically face north (i.e. north is at the top of the screen), so the path you take FROM YOUR HOUSE through your garden to the back is the direction it's facing (irregular shaped gardens excluded)

    Hey Matt. Great to hear from you. If you’ve got really dense clay sometimes the best method is to build up. Using raised beds and containers. Then you can choose the exact soil type you need. Alternatives. Betula, Willow and Gunnera will be fine in heavy wet soil along with marginal pond or bog plants. Hope that helps. Happy gardening. Lee

    This is vitally important when looking for a house in which you're going to do many garden projects. Lots which have an east-west alignment are nowhere near as good for gardening as lots with a north-south alignment, as each side of the yard on either end of the house will be shaded by the house for half of the day.

    Hi Garden Ninja - fab name btw. Thank you for the tips and fab videos. I have a question regarding a small red acer which i moved to a north facing area of the garden, its leaves have all fallen and I'm worried its in the wrong position. I have also planted new rhododendron and ornamental cherry tree - is this correct? I never had any luck on the shady north facing side. please help. (I live in the West Midlands if that's helpful)

  • @Gardenninja

    Hi S Jay. Good to hear from you. Acers should be fine in the shade. They hate wind. They’ll have dropped their leaves as they are deciduous. Ie they drop their leaves late autumn each year. Other specimens should be fine in the shade too. Hope that helps and happy gardening! Lee

    I find seating areas in the sun overrated and people hardly use them. Far better to select a place which is mostly in shade with pleasant views to observe nature at work.

    Hi Barrios. Great comment and I’m with you that we could all do with working with rather than against nature in our gardens. Quite often in urban gardens south facing gardens have a fair amount of shade from neighbouring houses packed in tightly here in the uk. Thanks for commenting and happy gardening! Lee

    According to the council my garden is NNW the very back of the garden is really sunny. Nearer to the house is shadier. With the climate crisis the back of the garden gets too hot and the plants suffer. So what do I do? The front garden, a tiny tiny space gets the early morning sun. Then later in the day the sun moves over the house into a long narrow garden. Only about 7 feet wide. Wheres the best p,ace for veg beds. Im confused 😒

  • @Gardenninja

    @Gardenninja

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Pauline. If I were you I’d choose plants that are suited to full sun for the end of the garden. Plants that can bask in dry full sun conditions. Most veg prefers sun vs shade. So I’d place your veg beds where they will get the most sun also. The biggest challenge is watering which is why fitting some form of water butt onto a shed or guttering of the house will be essential. Hope that helps. Happy growing. Lee 🥷🤘🌿

    If I had to choose, I'd ALWAYS choose a south facing garden for one fact only: shade can be created (screens, umbrellas or trees); the sun not. I have a north-east facing garden now and it is really noticeable how everything directly at the back of the house stays wet, muddy, drab and dreary after any rain, especially now in winter. So in lieu of the first reason: I can always add water to make it wet; I can't dry out the soil though

  • @Gardenninja

    Good advice Lee-Roy. If possible there’s more flexibility with a south facing garden but all is not lost if you’re working with a north facing garden. I hear from a lot of people each month saying they think gardening in anything other than south facing is hopeless. Which it isn’t. Thanks for commenting and good luck with your garden! Happy gardening. Lee

    You forgot to explain what ‘facing’ actually means in a garden. Is it from the house looking out to the garden? Or at the back wall of the garden looking towards the house? No one seems to explain this! Don’t underestimate the ignorance of the non-gardener lol.

  • @Gardenninja

    @Gardenninja

    Hi Liz! Good point. It’s not always obvious is it! Facing in this term means looking out from the house into the garden. The way the garden faces or looks out to wards a point on the compass. Ie north facing means you look out towards the north on the compass point. Many thanks for the comment and asking for clarity! Happy gardening. Lee 🥷🤘🌿
