Garcia & Weir - 1980 October - Radio City, NY Complete Press Conference

Музыка

1980 October, Location : New York ?
(Thanks David Stollak for the two segments of this video originally posted in 2008 which I simply brought into a one-segment video with minor modifications, dimension and notably the -15% in green color gain).
This is Jerry Garcia and Bobby Weir in a Press Conference speaking generally about their acoustic gig to come for the 8 nights at The Radio City Music Hall, NY. (Oct 22nd to Oct 31st 1980).
This is probably following their 15 night stand at the Warfield Theatre, SF (9.25.1980 to 10.14.1980) where they had just previously done an acoustic 1st set (their 1st since 1970).
We can possibly assume that this was recorded indeed post-Warfield shows as they evoke the "Simulcast" show to come of Halloween 10-31-1980, Frankin & Davis etc ...
0:00 ...
0:39 : the novelty of playing "acoustic" in theatres ...
1:24 : why going back to the acoustic sets ...
2:23 : Garcia "what's the question ? Say it real slow"
(4:29 : Bobby seems all bug-eyed !)
4:49 : "We're back" ... for a few hundred years
6:39 : Anything we really can't stand ? "That elevator music ..."
6:54 : What do you think about "disco" ?
(7:16 : slight cut in original copy)
7:56 : the video simulcasts !
10:12 : Garcia "well, anyone have any intelligent questions ?"
11:19 : end ...

They made such a great comedy team, because you had Bob with his mellow, slightly spaced-out baritone, and then Jerry with his wound up, animated,, almost elfin voice. Hilarious stuff.

Lately I've been missing the Grateful Dead so much it's painful. Saw my first show in 79. Was blessed to go 3 nights to Radio City in 1980 then saw them every year through 1993. But after 1990 the vibe got so sad & forced & Jerry was so sick.💔. But lately I have been sorely missing him & them.

At least you got to see Jerry. My mom and I (only 7 years old) had tickets to the final Chicago/Soldiers Field show but my grandpa fell ill. Next thing we hear on the radio he passed. All of us around the radio broke out into tears. Hold on to the memory and smash some pumpkins while you're at it! lol

In the late '60's I remember watching their press releases, on T.V., with my dad. They did the "constitution" thing. (That was just one of them). It was great, made an indelible impression on my 11 yr old mind. Plus the fact I remember my dad smiling and cracking up. That alone is worth its' weight.

I love The Dead, but their existence isnt a hard sell for me. They were excellent musicians and in the end they actually deserved more success than they had. Not to be funny but I find the existence of someone like Hitler and the fact he got an entire country on board with his insanity to be much more unreal.

Weir was the funny one usually. Sometimes his humor was juvenile especially in concert and stupid but in interviews he took the reins and was pretty funny.

Lol to think they would probably try to cancel Jerry for that in today's day and age is hilarious. Good luck cancelling that man. He didn't like it, but people really considered him their higher power, I seen it first hand. My older sister took me to a couple shows when I was pretty young. I seen girls begging people for miracles with tears in their eyes and literally hugging on to someone's leg. I watched one guy about to sell an extra to a girl who had change, and as she was counting it a dude came up and offered cash and the guy took that. Omg she had the biggest meltdown I think I ever seen in my life lol. Screaming, flailing around the parking lot, etc. It blew my young mind to say the least. And this was early 90s Dead. I also remember I was having so much fun in the parking lot I was gonna sell mine. So I bought a balloon and this tour head asked me if Id share it he'd smoke some bowls with me. So we sit Indian style between some cars and proceed to leave reality for 10 minutes. I'll never forget when we got done he said to me, don't sell your ticket, these parking lot partiers are ruining the scene, its about the music. Man it came off so heartfelt and sincere I went to the show. So glad I did because inside was a whole nother scene lol. I particularly remember the spinners/twirlers and alot of really serious dancing lol. I even got overwhelmed at one point and collapsed against the wall and people were asking if I was ok and what not. Only seen 3 GD shows but Im so glad I did. The phrase theirs nothing like a Dead show still holds true to this day, and Ive been to 100s of concerts. They really were special. Edit- sorry for the rant ✌
