Here's a dual garage test of the two 1003s I have. No blowers of course.

Yeah. That's what the 1003 was originally designed for. Hi-Lo for fire calls alert and attack for civil defense use. That's cool that they still use the hi-lo for fire calls!

These terrified me as a child when we lived in NW Arlington, VA in the early 1960's on Saturday tests...And you have TWO of them running in your garage!! Totally awesome! Now to run both of them in the garage with each of their roots blowers running full power...keep the garage door closed of course!

@TheFiremansavage I don't have the Ark horn rotator mounted to anything so I can run the rotator. I just got the chopper and solenoids put together yesterday on the Ark 1003. I haven't had time to do anything else with it. It wouldn't be worth the trouble to drag all that outside anyway.

@thunderboltlover The blower the sherman horn rotator is on is from Dallas. The camera is sitting on the blower frame from Arkansas. The frame is sitting on it's end. You can see the blower box from Arkansas at 1:38 in the video. It's standing on end. The siren isn't from Little Rock. It's from some small town around Pine Bluff. I can't remember what town.

The chopper rotator mounted up on the blower is on permanent loan from the city of sherman. The blower it's mounted on was recovered from an old dallas fire station that was demolished. I got it from the demolition company. The 1003 I got from arkansas came from a guy who recovered it from a city lot it had been sitting in for about 10 years.

@SuperUTBER You can't tell how loud it is from the video. Yes I probably should be wearing protectors but both of these sirens running together aren't as loud as an average rock concert. With them both running like this it's not even loud outside the garage. There is very little air moving through the choppers when running them like this. Notice on my videos where I have any air going through the choppers at all I'm wearing hearing protectors.

i see i thought they were way louder than that because i live 3 blocks away from where one still active and in use 1003 sits. and on the wind down you can hear the low gutteral growl it makes when the horn turns and points my direction. and i can hear that growl clear as a bell from inside my house. and 125 db i know is enough to make your ears ring but not damage your eardrums even if you stuck your head into the horn while its runnin

An octave lower is wayyyyy more that "slightly" lower. If you play my garage test of the fire station 10 siren and then the full up run of the exact same chopper set on the exact same setting in the oak ridge test video you can see the difference between blower and no blower.

  • @N617A

right. yea they do hi lo but (and i don't know if you know this so forgive me if you do) but the blower makes it loud and the solanoids ("bowtie" at the base of the horn) affect the hi lo sound. the 1000/T can't do the hi lo... a 3t22 has solanoids that are harder to see.

@MichaelJavert13 Well first of all I'm not - blowing civil defense sirens- I'm in a closed garage running only the choppers on the thunderbolts. It's not as loud as a 100 watt Marshall amp with a 4x12 cabinet would be if it was turned half way up. I only do this on weekdays when the neighbors are at work so I really doubt if any of them have ever heard me do it. The Model 5 i have run in my garage is full volume but again I only do it on weekdays when everyone is at work and it's sunny out.

The blower forces a high volume of air at low pressure through the siren chopper (rotor) causing the high sound volume. I guess the air being forced through the chopper might change the pitch a little but not much. That's what the 2hp chopper motor is for. The pitch can be set on the thunderbolt by changing the voltage to the chopper motor. There's a transformer with several different voltage taps in the control cabinet that does that. The pitch can be changed by wiring to the pitch desired.

well the horn is big enough to stick your head about half way down but i dont see very many people doing that. lolz. what im talking about is that i used to worry about loud noises causing me to go deaf, now its like id rather be the one making the noise and making my own ears explode. and using one of those thunderbolts would be a good start i suppose

The neighbors aren't usually home when I run them because I do it in the middle of the day on a weekday and as I have said dozens of times on here, They aren't that loud. If they are home when I run them and they are inside with the doors and windows closed I seriously doubt if they hear them. The booming car stereo jerks that blast up and down our street are far more sound invasive than my stupid Thunderbolts with no blowers. Now when I ran the Model 5 in the garage they could most likely hear that if they were home which they weren't at the time....
