    I think this was one of the most helpful videos I've ever watched on here. I'm in the exact same situation you were and couldn't figure out how to plug in an LED light like this when there was no plug on the ceiling. This helped me so much. Thank you making this!

    I put 6 of these same lights in my garage 6 months ago. I already had an existing light fixture overhead in the approximate center of the 2-car garage. This fixture was already controlled by a switch at the inside house entry door. I replaced the fixture with a 4-outlet receptical, routed the cords through the attic space (finished garage) and plugged them in. LOTS of light now. For mounting of the lights themselves, I didn't want them swinging on chains, so I drilled mounting holes through the metal housing, put screw anchors in the drywall ceiling, and screwed them in. They weight next to nothing, so they'll stay secure.

    Why you need 3000+ lumens from a single light source, it's simply overkill you are not getting more light for your garage, 800-1000Lumens per light is more than enough.

    Thanks for your video. I had returned this product simply because I did not realize it came needing a socket outlet and my existing fixture was hardwired. I did not realize how easy it would be to add a socket receptacle so I might go back and do this myself. I only wish you were more detailed on the measurements, etc you used for the socket receptacle installation as you were for the screw hole distance placements for the fixture install. You went straight to "so I cut the hole for the socket receptacle" but that is where I am going to have to wing it as a first timer. Otherwise great video.

Instead of installing the receptacle like you did, can I simply connect the wires from the wall to a female plug (rated at 15A & 125V) similar to the replacement plug for an extension power cord? Then, I can just plug the light fixture to it.

    Those old T12 rapid start fixtures will have trouble starting, especially in high humidity, if the tubes are dirty or the fixtures aren't grounded. Putting in an electronic ballast (even a T12 one) will fix the problem for good. Alternatively, clean and dry the tubes and make sure the fixtures are grounded (I see the ground wire is connected, but test it with a meter). One trick I've also used is to wrap a thin wire around each tube and attach the wires to the metal frame of the fixture. This has worked for me every time as long as the fixture is grounded. I guess it's too late for this advice though, unless you have other T12 fixtures.

    The leds don't put out any where as much light as the florescent light. But they are more directional. They seem to shine more downwards I find. You need to spend time walking around to realize the shadow effect & May need additional light above your work space. . If you watch back the video. You will realize how much of the ceiling the fluro tubes light up with ambient light

  • @JohnFBramfeld
    @JohnFBramfeld8 жыл бұрын

    The last time I checked, a fluorescent fixture put out about half again as much light as these led's. Unless you think you are overlighted, plan on buying three led fixtures for every two fluorescent you replace. Consequently, electricity savings are not much. It is moderately nice to eliminate hum, but the bottom line is that led fixtures don't make any sense as a fluorescent replacement unless the fixture already needs replacement.

    baddasz8 I would say the brightness is very close to the fluorescent ones I had before which was quite bright to begin with. As to the cable, you can always cut the plug and hardwire it but the wire comes out of the side so it's hard to hide.

  • @lestersart5834
    @lestersart58347 жыл бұрын

    It's the moisture getting into your ballast. If your garage was heated, you would not have this issue. But yeah, LED's are the logical fix. They use roughly half as much power as the fluorescents.

    thats weird, tubes/ballasts in our home, last years. the coil ones, some are working for may be 15+ years, those new electronic ones also don't go bad atleast in 3-4 years. are you sure the electricity supply at your place is clean ? leds, too depend on quality of components & design, it may last longer, or may not.....

    Best shop lights are T5 fluorescent. Notice how dark your garage is now with LED's. The old fluorescent fixture was brighter. Look at the light hitting the ceiling for each fixture. Fluorescent was brighter and had a larger band of light hitting the ceiling. LED's have a huge drawbacks. They require many diodes to attempt to be as bright as fluorescent or incandescent.

    Very nice instructional video. I'm curious why, since you have access to the AC mains wiring in the ceiling already, you didn't do as you suggested and cut the long power cable off the lights and wire them directly to the mains? It would avoid those big bundles of cable next to the lights in addition to the time and expense of installing two ceiling boxes and outlets. Still, the finished product looks really nice.

  • @dial2fast

    @dial2fast

    +Andypro The reason I did not cut the AC cord is because that wire came out on the side. There is no easy way to hide that wire with it coming out on the side.

    Philip Richards LED should last a very very long time without needing replacement. Also uses less electricity.

    Yadda! Yadda! I can get a new 4ft fluorescent tube for under 4 bucks. After 2 or 3 years they get covered in wood dust, oil, spider webs and other crud. That's when I swap them out for new. If you cost it out, that's cheaper than attempting to clean them. As to 35 dollars for an LED strip - 45 years??! By then, they'd be covered in a half inch of crap and be emitting nothing, and I'd have been retired for 20 years!

    LED color sucks too, unless you buy the expensive CRI 95+ bulbs, strips, etc. Most of the LED's you buy are CRI 80 if you put an incandecent right next to it you inmidiately notice there is something off on the colors, not much on 2700K, but it's there. Incandecent CRI 100.

    The power cord should not be put into a coil, that will create a heating coil with the light on, over time it will cause trouble. Its better to shorten the power cord to its min. lenght without the coil.

    I've had the same exact same problem. Put a different LED system in and much better. My theory is the Fluorescent manufacturers realize their time is limited, so now they're just making crap bulbs that only last a year.

    why couldn't you just pop off both plastic end caps and mount your screws to hold it instead of pre-drilling anchors?

  • @MrToolmaker23

    @MrToolmaker23

    I would agree. The idea of having fixtures on the ceiling with screws not completely tightened is a bit scary. Could have drilled an access hole in the fixture housing to get a screw driver in to tighten the screws. Probably would have hard-wired it also.

    Harley Badger, who asks you to buy cheap stuff (overseas or not) you pay for what you get, so stop blaming the product/people/country, it is after all YOUR judgement & decision, you were not forced. What's wrong with these days is people are quick to point fingers everywhere else except at ourselves first....
