টাকা নাই তাই মানুষ এখন রিকশায় উঠতে চায় না | Peoples Story | দ্রব্যমূল্যের ঊর্ধ্বগতির এ বাজারে কেউই ভালো নেই। চাল, ডাল, তেল, পেয়াজ সহ নিত্য প্রয়োজনীয় পণ্যের দাম হু হু করে বেড়েই চলছে। ঊর্ধ্বগতির লাগামের সাথে তাল মিলিয়ে চলার জন্য মানুষ প্রতিদিনের জীবনযাত্রায় পরিবর্তন আনছে। অন্যান্য পেশাজীবীদের মতো রিকশাওয়ালারাও ভালো নেই। আগের তুলনায় এখন তাদের যাত্রী পরিবহনের পরিমান কমে গেছে। মানুষ টাকা বাঁচাতে হেটেই গন্তব্যের পথে রওনা হয়ে যায়। ফলে রিকশা ওয়ালারা আগের মতো উপার্জন করতে পারে না।
এমনটাই জানিয়েছেন এক রিকশাচালক।
রিকশা। বাংলাদেশের জনসাধারণের কাছে সবচেয়ে বেশি ব্যবহৃত যানবাহন। আবার এই ত্রি-চক্রযানকে কেন্দ্র করেই জীবিকা নির্বাহ করছে অসংখ্য মানুষ। ছোট এই যানটির কোথায় শিল্প নেই? বেলের বাহার, ঝালর, পা-দানির একটুখানি জায়গা, হুড, মেটালিক বডি ও পাত সবখানেই রঙিন চিত্রকলা। ফুলপাতা, নকশা, প্রকৃতি, পশুপাখি, লোকগল্প কথার চিত্রায়ণ রয়েছে এসব চিত্রকলায়।
যারা নিজেদের সুনিপুণ হাত দিয়ে এসব রঙ্গিন চিত্রকলায় রিকশাগুলোকে রাঙিয়ে তোলেন তারা নিসন্দেহে অনেক বড় শিল্পী। কিন্তু হাতের কাজ ও পরিশ্রমের স্বীকৃতি তো তারা পাচ্ছেনই না, উল্টো বঞ্চিত হচ্ছেন উপযুক্ত পারিশ্রমিক থেকে।
The rickshaws were a convenient means of travel, able to traverse winding, narrow city streets. During monsoon season, passengers might be carried out of the carriage, above the flooded streets, to the door of their arrival. They offered door-to-door travel, unlike scheduled public bus and tram service.
Pulling rickshaws in the city of Dhaka: a way out of poverty?
Rickshaws are commonly believed to have been invented in Japan in the 1860s, at the beginning of a rapid period of technical advancement. In the 19th century, rickshaw pulling became an inexpensive, popular mode of transportation across Asia.
Peasants who migrated to large Asian cities often worked first as a rickshaw runner. It was "the deadliest occupation in the East, [and] the most degrading for human beings to pursue."
The rickshaw's popularity in Japan declined by the 1930s with the advent of automated forms of transportation, like automobiles and trains. In China, the rickshaw's popularity began to decline in the 1920s. In Singapore, the rickshaw's popularity increased into the 20th century. There were approximately 50,000 rickshaws in 1920 and that number doubled by 1930.
