The part where Sam begs mon for not leaving her, it breaks my heart. She's a HON but still Sam kneels in front of her😭 I shed tears in this episode. We cried too much. Their acting was so good and on point. What lady neung did was satisfying. After being gone for a long time she had a courage to fight together with Sam along grandmother's manipulative acts.

If she chooses her grandmother, then she lives with letting her happiness go, and if she chooses Mon she lives with the guilt of leaving her grandmother with no one. It was very interesting to see the reactions from different cultural backgrounds. I'm upset with the situation but also understand sam's position. As Thai/Asian, filial piety is ingrained in our culture so you shouldn't hurt your parents (physically or emotionally). Freen explains how he feels as Sam, that there are only 2 people in Sam's life, and he just has to kneel with Mon and Grandma. It shows that the love he has for both of them is pretty much the same which is why Sam can't choose between the two. He knew that if he left his grandmother, her grandmother would have no one in this world. Becky also explained that her character Mon actually wanted Sam to choose her grandmother because she knew Sam loved his grandmother and if she chose Mon, Sam would also be heartbroken. But if he chose his grandmother even though they were about to break up, he would still fulfill his “filial piety” and not leave his grandmother. 😣😭

Asian descent here, and I watch this show with my mom. We both agree that Sam needs to stand firm in choosing happiness and cutting away from toxic family. She’s considered the blacksheep of her family because of this type of thinking, but while watching this she insists that I follow my heart no matter what and stand firm on my decisions because I have to live my life for myself. Sam’s reality is true but it’s not impossible to break away from that, and there are parents that believe in ending that toxic cycle for sure

The part with Sam in the wedding dress is not the actual wedding it's pre-wedding photos. The doctor tells her if she does anything to upset her grandma it might actually kill her and she loves her grandmother so she feels she has no choice here. If she chooses to do what she wants the consequences could actually cost someone she loves their life. You have to remember until Sam met Mon she never did anything for herself, always doing everything her grandmother wanted, it's hard To break that habit. I have a lot of thoughts on this episode. If Grandmother thinks Kirk is a perfect choice, then she can marry him and not Sam. If Sam loves Mon as much as she said she does, then she would have walked away from her Grandmother already. I am also torn cause Mon has loved Sam most of her life and if Sam isn't strong enough to truly fight for Mon then Sam doesn't deserve Mon. When I first saw this episode I almost threw my phone cause Neung shouldn't have had to come fight for Sam and her happiness against the Grandmother. Sam needs to be happy and live her life and stop being a coward. Apparently what Mon's mother told Sam in the beginning of episode 9 didn't stick and that is a shame.

It's not about being a coward, Sam stood up for Mon against everyone including Kirk. Sam has 2 weaknesses, grandma and Mon it's about family dynamics in brown/Asian cultures. What's worse for Sam, by Neung leaving and Song dying she had to take on all the expectations and responsibilities as deemed fit by grandma who raised her since she was small. Being brown myself, family is such a huge part of our lives and the one thing that is engrained is that you never hurt or disappoint your family especially your elders. The conflict in Sam is very true and realistic.
