I’m Asian American, a native of New York City, and I went to high school in Lower Midtown in the 80s. There was some real scary shit going on back then. People today who weren’t alive back then cannot even begin to imagine how much more crime and violence there was in NYC in the 70s and 80s. Crime peaked in the early 90s, and has been declining ever since then. The city’s finances have recovered, and NYC now is clean and expensive and pretty peaceful compared to how it was back then. And Noodletown is the bomb, yo. 28 Bowery.

It's crazy being from NYC, being born in the '80s and growing up in the '90s watching a video like this. I am from Brooklyn and have a history with hanging out in Chinatown Fair in the early 2000s playing DDR a lot, so way later than what China Mac was talking about and nothing gang-related. But even in the early 2000s you could see remnants of what he is talking about in this video, and I used to hear about Chinatown from some friends at the arcade who grew up in the area. As far as NYC has come, you still see some of the old world in the background and directly in the video; Elizabeth Center, the original Chinatown Fair sign, Wo Hop, Canal Street, Mott Street, etc... My thing was always video games so I used to love coming to Chaintown and stopping by Elizabeth Center or J&L Video Games before going to Chinatown Fair. I've never met China Mac but I feel like I know him because of how relatable he is and the way he describes Chinatown and New York City. Glad that he was able to represent some NYC history. Solid dude, solid channel, solid video. Salute.

My father grew up in Chinatown in the 80's and it was no joke. My dad was friendly with a lot of people and it often caused issues as these rival gangs hated the fuck out of each other. My dad had a pistol to his back while he was peeing one day as a gang thought my dad was running with their rivals. Thankfully my dad knew of the guys there or else he would've been dead....Asian gangs were as ruthless...

it's because mainland China was doing the “strike of gang, swipe dark” back in 1983. a lot of most brutal Chinese gang ran out to Hong Kong. and they spread to whole world like USA and Southeast Asia and Latin America. and their government did it again in 1996 and 2001 and 2018. China is safe right now for some reason. because their bad peoples are going abroad or just in prison

I'm From NYC. Bronx chick. My Dad used to take me to Noodle Town. It was open 247. I still go. This dude is accurate. China town was wild gangsta. Who remembers the live chicken arcade? He speaks the truth. Good memories. Xoxo I saw like 20 slaves screaming for help off Doyster street begging for their lives, freedom as the owner locked them in. Called the cops and the cops did nothing. The payoffs were real. Hope those girls survived 🙏. It was so sad and horrible. Great segment.

I'm also a brooklyn native but grew up up chinatown in the 2000s. This video brings back memories of those days for sure. Murder ally had the connecting tunnels that we also used back in the day. However, it was a 50/50 chance of getting away or having another fight, shooting or stabbing down there when crossing. You never knew who or what crew would be down in the tunnels. The fair was also the chill spot, crazy nights happened there. Big shout out the multiple owners that have ran and saved the fair from closing. The gang culture did spread out a little, some of the crews at the time that I remember interacting with was, Flying Dragons, Ghost Shadows, BTK, Hong Ching, Young Lions, and a few others. Lots of gambling dens in those buildings. Good times reminiscing. We also remember hearing when Mac got out, news spread very quick within the area.

Canal street back in the 90s and early 2000s before Gulianni was a fucking abyss, real talk. You turn the wrong corner and things would be "a bit unfortunate" for you. Also, he's spot on about China White. Shit went as far north as my hood in the South Bronx. (For anyone confused by the lingo, The Bronx is the borough to the north of Manhattan. Chinatown is on the Southside of Manhattan.) China White spread through all 5 brought like wildfire. The Tong would bring it in, the Asian gangs would move it, and the Black and Hispanic gangs eventually buying weight from the Dragons and moving it in the outer boroughs. Eventually the Irish and Italians started seeing how much the Tong were banking started getting nervous. Everyone started getting greedy...then Gulianni came into office in the early 90s and went to war with everyone. With no unifying partnerships strong enough...everyone started falling. The street level crews 1st, then the Irish, then the Ruskies, then the Tong and finally the Families. By 1997, organized crime in NYC was crippled. You still had small pockets of crews, but it would never again reach the power it had the 60 years prior.
