Gandalf's biggest Mistake, Telepathy, Frodo in Rivendell - LotR Film & Book Differences explained

Happy Hobbit Day (if you read this at the 22. September). Frodo awakes in Rivendell and we look into his dialogue with Gandalf (in the chapter Many Meetings). It uncovers Gandalf's biggest Mistake and that the Wizard seems to be able to read Frodo's mind (telepathy). We in addition look at film and book differences, who the statue at Frodo's bed is, what the 8 arms of the lamp-stand (candle-stand) could mean, and the power of the fade to white and fade to black, etc.
I hope you enjoy this episode!

May I just say, I am never disappointed in your reading of the actual text. You read clearly, with no stumbling and with great expressiveness. This helps those who do not read Tolkien to really get an idea of how beautiful his writing was, and to really encourage the connections to be made from book to movie “and back again”.

haha thank you. Sometimes a lot of tries go into reading those passages. I try to not make it sound boring within my possibilities and "deliver" to some degree. So happy you hear you enjoy that. Yes agreed Tolkien's writing is really beautiful and often I notice that I can't express it better, so I just read the quote. Other times I feel, that I should provide the source for what i just said. This way I can bring people closer to the books. Always happy to hear when people leave a comment, that they started reading the books ^^

about the smoking, you could argue that because hobbits are so used to the pipe and its smokes, him there could give frodo that familiarity. its not like he is blowing smoke directly at frodo, but by having the smoke in the room, would make him feel more at ease.

haha yes true :D But deep in my heart it still fells wrong. I think in the 70 you were allowed to smoke in hospitals too in some places. I just don't see it being an issue, only in recent years have people went mad about second hand smoke, but it only effects you in confined spaces like a car when it's done for prelonged periods. I'm not justifying it and I wouldn't smoke with my daughter in b the car but you breath in much worse in the city on a daily basis.

Tolkien himself also smoked a pipe, I seem to remember seeing a picture of him with it. Back in the days when he was devising this tale, I'm sure few people imagined that smoking, let alone secondary smoking, was as harmful as we now know. My grandad used to, he wouldn't have dreamed that it might harm me!

haha yes, I think the series lives from its love to details, so sometimes we won't move much around, esp. in Rivendell. I know people really enjoy the long videos, but they are tough to make and take a ton of discipline. For me personally videos that are a bit shorter, are much more pleasant to make and I can upload more often. This one also got relatively long, even though it ends relatively suddenly, but ofc I could have continued ^^ It's often a matter of being intimidated by the a mount of work the very long videos take and then it's hard to motivate myself to start + long times without uploads are sadly also not ideal for growing a KZread channel, which pressures me a bit into working more, to finish them faster.

I imagine Gollum’s mind was perhaps hard to untangle. It must have been very damaged by years of isolation, bitterness and resentment, and finally torment in the dungeons of Sauron. The emergence of the Sméagol personality speaks to the healing he experienced in the kindness and forgiveness of Frodo.

For whatever is worth, just wanted to let you know that the regular reruns of your videos have helped find inner peace and resilience in these uncertain times. Thanks for the detail oriented work. One can tell these videos come from a deep place of respect and appreciation for the works you cover. To add a little to the conversation, I believe the reason why Sir McKellen insisted on smoking was because it is part of what made Gandalf a great character. It seems to me that pipeweed helped Gandalf both think and relax. It makes sense that he'd smoke a bit while concerned about Frodo's wound and his recovery. From an even more skewed and subjective perspective, I like to think that Gandalf was also paying tribute to hobbit culture; this small detail helps bring him closer to men. Gandalf is a great wise man, but like other man, is greatly concerned about his friend's well-being.

Gandalf's line: "There are many powers in this world, for good or ill. Against some I have not been tested." is said after the Fellowship leaves Caradras and just before getting to The Door of Durin, foreshadowing his confrontation with the Balrog and his seperation from The Fellowship (or as both readers and audience think that Gandalf have died until we see him in The Two Towers as Gandalf the White, though he DID die but was resurrected by Eru Illuvatar in order to complete his mission). This bit was only in the Extended Edition.

Awesome. Gandalf is certainly more fallible in the books, at least until he becomes Gandalf the White. Keep in mind that Tolkien had not connected Gandalf with the Maia yet at the time of writing LotR. That would come later. It is also because of this that in the book Gandalf doesn't know there is a balrog in Moria, which doesn't really make any sense once you know Gandalf's full history. Jackson corrected this in the movie by having Aragorn be the one who didn't know while Gandalf clearly did.

Was a bit confused by the title, thought you were saying that Gandalf's greatest mistake was telepathy, lol! Indeed reading people's minds could be a bit of a two-edged sword! But I was impressed by this video's thoughtfulness. From a lore pov, Gandalf's failure to anticipate the Nazgul's move is explained fairly well, but i would add that from a storytelling pov its necessary for drama. The first encounter with the Nazgul, flight to the ford, Weathertop, and final chase with Glorfindel/Arwen are the heart of the tale in the first part of Fellowship. All of which wouldn't have happened if Frodo had simply toddled off to Rivendale unopposed a month or so earlier! They're also some of the most memorable scenes in fantasy literature and cinema. Oh just to add, the analysis of camera angles and fades was absolutely fascinating!

Sometimes an author tells us a character is brave, wise and strong but the actions of the character do not support this claim. This is telling rather than showing. Far from restricting art, I think it encourages it. Tolkien is a master of showing character (even if he can be wordy with other things).

@ Aria The show, don't tell "rule" has definitely its right to exist and is very useful. What I meant is, that one must be careful with general rules in art that become the only way to do things. In you example you could hide a "meta narrative" with this, etc. The character King of the fantastic One-Punch Man series comes to my mind (even though it's much more complex here and probably a really bad example, because it also inverts the idea again in a weird way). Hello there, Maybe you don't know but I was thinking about something yesterday. Every story has his holes, so I can understand that. I think there is a problem with 4 daggers from Arnor which was made to Kill Witch King (WK). Here is the story: - Strange Arnor Knew Everthing Not Dwarves(which their Ruins), not even High Elves(which their Magic) wasn't able to make that. Gondor is also Arnor, they both comes from Numenor. So, if Arnor made, why Gondor didn't made ? Also, How Arnor maybe it ? I mean, Ruins on Weapon, Gandalf fights vs Nazgules and he wasn't able to kill or Disable their Powers, but some Unknown dudes made Anti Nazgul Weapons. I guess Ruins Power are superior than Gandalf Mair powers. Also what made them think that Ruins will work ? if you have Mighty Magical Enemy you can't from nowhere found magic Weapon which will kill him. Also, making short daggers is very bad idea from strategic point of view, I mean to use that weapon you will need to go face to face with Nazgul in Battlefield. Why they didn't put that Ruins on Bow / Arrows / Spear ... even Glorfiend could kill Nazgules, and WK would not damage Boromir. Maybe Arnor made more Anti WK Weapons, but Question still open, Ruins comes from Dwarves, Magic comes from Elves, Men, well they are just Men :) If Arnor knew(from nowhere) How kill WK / Nazgul / Wraith, why Arnor didn't share his knowledge with his Allies ? like that middle earth will not be afraid from Nazgules. What you will say about this ? Thanks :)

In my opinion there were other Weapons too that could have hurt the Nazgûl. E.g. Narsil, the Sword of King Elendil and it could even hurt Sauron with the One Ring. It was a sword made by the Darves (it's a bit surprising, but it was made by the legendary Dwarven Smith Telchar). In my opinion it could also hurt the Nazgûl. I would argue that also Gil-galad's spear Aeglos could also hurt the Nazgûl. glorfindeol also rode against the Nazgûl alone, so I would assume, he could also face them in a fight with his weapon (I assume a sword). Gandalf used Glamdring a sword made by the Elves of Gondolin to kill a Balrog. In my opinion it could also hurt them. And also the Men of Númenor where very advanced and created weapons. Esp. in Arnor during the War against Angmar. They had to develop weapons like these, to defend themselves against the Nazgûl and their forces. They also made swords, etc. but the Hobbits probably can't wield normal swords so easily and they just took the daggers instead. There were all kinds of things in the Barrow-downs. E.g. I remember the mention of a shield. Quote: "While they were eating Tom went up to the mound, and looked through the treasures. Most of these he made into a pile that glistered and sparkled on the grass." So there were more things on that pile. Further in that passage we can read: "For each of the hobbits he chose a dagger, long, leaf-shaped, and keen, of marvellous workmanship, damasked with serpent-forms in red and gold." This is an interesting detail: Tom Bombadil chose those daggers for them, so he might have known the fate that awaits the Hobbits. I hope that helps clearing some things up ^^

But how did it happen? and why did men and dwarves accept them? Did sauron disguise himself again as a bearer of gifts or something similar?

For a few months last year I tried to release 15min videos weekly, but it was too work intensive and I could not maintain it (it also did not feel healthy). So one video in 2 weeks is the best I can do for a better life/work balance. When videos get longer or are difficult to make (complicated topic, etc) than I can't keep up the two week rhythm too. 2 Two of the three videos I made before this one were 30 mins and the was other 42 mins, so that's like making seven 15min videos. Considering that I don't feel too bad of taking a bit longer. Even though I make these lore video for 3 years now, I'm still surprised how much work it is to make them. But maybe I'm just slow ^^

Yet he is resolved to stay with the rearguard, lest the retreat over the Pelennor become a rout. He may, perhaps, hold his men together long enough, but I doubt it. He is pitted against a foe too great. 'King of Angmar long ago, Sorcerer, Ringwraith, Lord of the Nazgûl, a spear of terror in the hand of Sauron, shadow of despair.'_ _'Then, Mithrandir, you had a foe to match you,' said Denethor. 'For myself, I have long known who is the chief captain of the hosts of the Dark Tower. Is this all that you have returned to say? Or can it be that you have withdrawn because you are overmatched?'_ _Pippin trembled, fearing that Gandalf would be stung to sudden wrath, but his fear was needless. 'It might be so,' Gandalf answered softly. 'But our trial of strength is not yet come. And if words spoken of old be true, not by the hand of man shall he fall, and hidden from the Wise is the doom that awaits him. However that may be, the Captain of Despair does not press forward, yet. Yes, ofc, but Galadriel, Celeborn, Elrond and Galadriel could communicate without speech and we find another hint in the Silmarillion. There are probably more examples, so I don't see why it should not be possible to take Gandalf's word a bit more literally here. You can read it as: "You have talked long in your sleep and [in addition] it has not been hard for me to read your mind and memory." but ofc also as: "You have talked long in your sleep and [as a result] it has not been hard for me to read your mind and memory." I would agree on the latter, if there were no hints of Gandalf being able to use some kind of telepathy, but as mentioned we have hints, that he can do this. So why should this not be the case here?

Gandalf lied to Frodo about not knowing that the black riders had arisen again! It states in the book that his cousin Radagast the brown told him they did, and were on their way to the Shire! That’s when he decided to leave and go see Saruman, and left Frodo hanging! True, he did mention them to Frodo of what they were, but that’s it. But how well though? For Gildor asked Frodo when questioned about them “has Gandalf told you nothing?” And Frodo responds “nothing about such creatures.” So what’s going on here??

he means if he had known it when he was in the Shire in Bag End with Frodo. But he left and met Radagast on the road much later and only at this point he knew about the Nazgûl. And from all of this it was smart to go to Saruman, because he still had time, wrote Frodo a later to leave the Shire as soon as possible. He did not expect Saruman's betrayal on this scale or being imprisoned for weeks or Butterbur not delivering his letter. It went really unfortunate for him. And the Nazgûl were still far away.

ThePhilosophersGames ok, that made sense. It was from afar on the road to the south of the Shire when he learned of the nazgul being active. That’s why he went to Saruman and trusted Frodo and Butterbur to do the right thing. Oh.., Frodo did not leave until September which Gandalf didn’t intend, He was captured by then. Gildor Aragorn and the hobbits were taken aback with worry and fear since he had suddenly disappeared, and had heard no news either from him or about him. That’s why Gandalf never told Frodo they were abroad, he couldn’t have. But knowing Gandalf, if he had known, he would’ve left with Frodo. He was deceived by Saruman as was Radagast, for he heard nothing wrong in his voice or words, to all concerned, Saruman was being genuine.. and being the head of the order I guess it was right to go to him and open up about what he knew: no one foresaw treachery!

Proof: Gandalf is an absolute Clueless Fool. Gandalf, said to be the wisest of all the Maiar, given 1 of the 3 Elven rings of ring of Power called Narya by Círdan the Shipwright, knowing full well that magical "rings" are the most powerful artifacts in all of middle-earth for the last 4000 years, a member of the "council of the wise"; watches Bilbo for 60 years in a row use a "magical ring", then fumbles about for those same 60 years never once suspecting or checking into Bilbo's ring. I mean why would the " wisest" being in all of middle-earth NOT bother looking into a "magical ring" at the first suspicion. Any excuses for Gandalfs stupidity presented are "lame" bc being the Angel of pure Wisdom from the Heavens is what defines Gandalf. A Wise being would never overlook something soo patently obvious. So prove me wrong that Gandalf isn't a Dope smoking befuddled and bespittled simpleton.

  • @ThePhilosophersGames

    @ThePhilosophersGames

Yes I agree it's strange that Gandalf did nothing for so long. I would have argued Gandalf did only know that Bilbo had a magical Ring, but not that it was a Great Ring of Power, but he denies even this: ‘When did I first begin to guess?’ he mused, searching back in memory. ‘Let me see - it was in the year that the White Council drove the Dark Power from Mirkwood, just before the Battle of Five Armies, that Bilbo found his ring. A shadow fell on my heart then, though I did not know yet what I feared. I wondered often how Gollum came by a Great Ring, as plainly it was - that at least was clear from the first. Then I heard Bilbo’s strange story of how he had ‘‘won’’ it, and I could not believe it. When I at last got the truth out of him, I saw at once that he had been trying to put his claim to the ring beyond doubt. Much like Gollum with his ‘‘birthday-present’’. The lies were too much alike for my comfort. Clearly the ring had an unwholesome power that set to work on its keeper at once. That was the first real warning I had that all was not well. The timeline is not fully clear here though. I can't really say when exactly Gandalf found out about Bilbo's Ring (maybe he guessed it after the Misty Mountain passage, where Bilbo tells his story, but leaves out that he found a Ring). I assume he told Gandalf "his version" later (maybe back in the Shire?). But if he tells him in the Shire, we don't know when. It could have taken decades then. After the 111th Birthday, Gandalf had to catch up with knowledge and did research for many years. But this is so strange to me too. I think I criticised that part also in one of the episodes of this series. I get why he did not suspect it being the One Ring. But why does Gandalf, who knows about the Great Rings (he has one himself) and I assume about the existence of the Nazgûl (= Ringwraith), allow Bilbo to have such a dangerous Ring. If he knows it's a Great Ring of power, than he knows the danger. They can transform humans into wraiths (Hobbits are counted as humans). Maybe because Sauron did not possess the One Ring, they were somewhat safe? And he thought the Shire is the best hiding place and no danger as long as Bilbo does not use it? But still this put Bilbo at danger. It's a bit weird. I guess he either did not know much about the Great Rings at all or he thought it would not be dangerous while Sauron did not possess the One Ring and used the Shire as hiding place, because even Saruman was a bit suspicious.

But knowing it was strange for Gollum to have a great ring, he watched Bilbo for the effects, and saw that basically he seemed okay, though his not aging was worrying. The scene after Bilbo's party startled him. For the next few years he watched Bilbo, watched Frodo, and then looked for Gollum - how could such a ring have come to him? The ring was probably as safe and secret as it could be, in the Shire. He worried about Frodo, but had to know for sure, had to have the whole story, before knowing what to do. What could he have done before that that wouldn't have brought on more danger?

@@ThePhilosophersGames I think you have a good point. The Dwarven Rings did not turn their bearers into wraiths. But they did inspire them with an even greater greed for gold (and presumably treasure generally)... something which Sauron knew had been destructive to his enemies in the past (such as the slaying of Thingol over possession of the Nauglamir in the Silmarillion). Now while this was more to do with the nature of the dwarves themselves, did Gandalf realise this? And although he knew that men such as the Nazgul had fallen (men are weak, as Elrond said!) what about hobbits? Few knew much about them (Gandalf was the nearest to an expert outside their land) Furthermore Gollum, a fallen hobbit, had possessed the Ring for many years, and he never faded into a wraith either. So its possible Gandalf might have initially believed that a Ring of Power, almost certainly a Dwarven Ring (because lore had accounted for the location of all the others, as he thought) born by a hobbit, was not such an immediate and terrible peril to its user. Especially not as dangerous as that ring in the hands of someone far more susceptible, including perhaps himself! (The more powerful the bearer, the more potential harm they could do with it if they fell under its sway). At the council of Elrond (sorry to jump ahead to the next video) Gandalf explained that he watched Bilbo carefully for signs of malign influence, and that at first he wasn't sure his apparent lack of aging wasn't due to a combination of good genes and the long hobbit life-span. It was only when Bilbo began acting seriously out of character at the end of his 111th bday that he was alarmed enough to start researching the Ring (knowing also the possible mental damage that simply taking it from Bilbo could wreak). At the very least, you could say this caution was justified by some of the terribly bad decisions made over similar artifacts in the past. And for the record, you once again respond graciously to a rather crude enquiry. Despite the film's obvious jokes at Gandalf's 'weed' habit, his choice of narcotic was almost certainly tobacco, not cannabis. Mocking his actions as being due to foolishness, senility or drug stupor echoes the words of Saruman, hardly someone we'd want to emulate!

haha that is true, but I also like to look a bit deeper into film making and this was a good opportunity to talk about blocking and explaining why Peter Jackson altered things. I often get comments asking why Peter Jackson and his team changed this from the books and I have to write long answers, but now I felt it as a good example to demonstrate the problems a film maker might have had and why they decided to change a few things. I found that part really interesting personally.

@@ThePhilosophersGames You are commendably polite in your reply to a somewhat churlish comment. Of course had there not been any discernable reason, then this length of time taken on Gandalf's positioning would be over the top. Furthermore if this was a one-off documentary film, then it would probably be a bad use of available time/space. But in a series of detailed videos exploring LOTR in depth, its perfectly fine. Also you explained exactly why this seemingly insignificant change was also important from a filmic viewpoint. And you did so with references to the history of cinema, eloquently and with interest.

Thank you ^^ I try to be polite, but it's sometimes difficult (to be honest). In this case I can see though, why someone would maybe prefer a stronger focus on the lore. But as you pointed out, we have the time for this in a series ^^
