GAMSAT Biology Crash Course #3 - Body Systems | Section 3 for NSBs

Hey everyone! This was a really fun one to put together not only because it's a lot more relevant to medicine itself but also because it's just a really fun topic to teach and explain.
This video goes through 6 of the major body systems commonly referenced in the GAMSAT (Cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, endocrine and nervous system).
As always, these videos are designed to get those of you without a science or biology background up to speed and familiar with the principles behind related GAMSAT questions but I wouldn't think that you'd need to memorise any of the information but rather just get comfortable with its use and its meaning so that there are no surprises on exam day.
Chapters:
0:00 Intro
1:53 Anatomical Terminology
10:44 Cardiovascular System
24:43 Respiratory System
32:30 Gastrointestinal System
39:53 Urinary & Renal System
44:18 Endocrine System
46:50 Nervous System
If you're looking for more strategic approaches to problem-solving, check out some of my other Sample Question Walkthrough videos where I demonstrate how I tackle S3 questions.
I've also now put together a resources page:

Since 2011, I've been helping students take a simpler approach to their studies and educating people in anything from science and maths to English and economics. In March 2021 I sat the GAMSAT and achieved an 84 including a 100 in Section 3. Hopefully, that's credentials enough to give this video a good watchin'.

Hey Jesse, you are working so hard on these, thank-you! I am working through these as a refresher. Have you finished the content for physics and chemistry? How many more videos were you planning to add to the biology playlist?

  • @jesseosbourne

Appreciate it Jaymie-Lea! Yep so the Physics and Chemistry series are all done (I may do some smaller follow up skills based videos but the content is covered already). For bio, I'd imagine that there is only 1 or 2 more to go. There's a few loose topics (gene expression, metabolism, adaptation, enzymes) that need covering so I should be able to wrap up with those next week :)

@@jesseosbourne Thanks so much Jesse! They are really well made. Even though they are 45-60min long they feel bite size because of the time stamps so you feel like you're moving onto something new. Helps with consolidation too! :)

Thanks jesse , your videos are wonderful. i am preparing for the march one , do you reckon watching your crash videos will be enough for section 3 as I only left with month and half? Any advice , will be highly appreciated.

Hey Gagandeep! So I wouldn't say that the crash course videos are a substitute for regular practice with the ACER material, as this will really give you a better opportunity to develop your reasoning skills and familiarise yourself with the exam. The Crash Course videos are a quick way to understand the rough boundaries of the relevant science content that is most commonly assessed or relied up in the exam to provide context for anyone needing to refresh or learn any of the topics. If you've worked through the crash course videos, I'd recommend working through the ACER material in sets of 20 questions at a time and then increasing towards a longer sessions (50-75 questions under timed conditions) as you approach the March sitting. Anywhere that you re making mistakes, either come back to that section of the crash course video, review other content (Khan academy for example is a good) and then try to work through why you got the question wrong and what it was in the question that should have prompted the correct reasoning Best of luck!

Hey Jesse, I scored 72 in S3 3/2021 and 75 S3 9/2021, the first time I studied a bit, went slowly, was more sure of my answers but only made it through the first 75% of the questions or so, while in the second sitting I didn't study, rushed through, was very unsure of my answers and kinda lost focus towards the end but somehow scored higher (September sitting is possibly easier?), I'm going to watch all your videos, I think speed is one of my main weaknesses, I'm keen to hear your suggestions about how to speed up and how to filter out unnecessary information in the stimulus which can be overwhelming

  • @jesseosbourne

Congrats on the scores, man! It's hard to say whether the Sep sitting was easier or harder but given the scores are standardised it could also be variations in cohort competitiveness. Time management is a big one for Section 3. I'd recommend my time management video if you haven't caught it yet. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hKyBydyEkbvTXbw.html My biggest tip, given you've clearly got a strong grasp of the science is to practice categorising the question as you read so that you can begin narrowing down as you read. ie. Is this a bio/chem/physics/maths question? Then 'what sub-topic'? What skill or concept is being targeted? Is it a brand new concept (ie. rely on the stem or on general patterns) or is it closer to prior knowledge (pKa, pH, stoichiometry etc)

@@jesseosbourne Thanks for your tips sir, I'll watch the time management video (I'm planning to watch all your videos) and I will begin categorising questions. Thanks!
