I don't think adding a solid color layer and clipping it , is a bad method..... It depends person to person.... Maybe some people don't like opening layer styles dialogue box pop up... Instead it's easy to change it from a solid layer. This is my personal opinion.

Preety much yes but not so quick. It'd rather say that its better to learn ai as well that helps you with your designs to ease your work and make yourself much more efficient. What you can actually focus on is user centric designs that focuses more on what is suitable for the user rather than think about the product from your perspective. Its better to work over wide variety of designs and become not just a good designer but a good problem solver to improve designs. For job you need to show what more can you bring for the company besides good designs.
