Gaming Addiction | Lived Experience

Charlie Bracke grew up living as an online gaming addict who at one point was spending an average of 14 hours per day gaming as an adult. As his use escalated he dropped out of college, lost a long-term relationship and lost his job. Knowing something had to change he found the courage to seek professional treatment at reSTART Life, a residential treatment program that focuses on addressing different online addictions and mental health conditions. Charlie now enjoys speaking about his struggles with technology and gaming in order to raise awareness and help others struggling with similar mental health issues.

Thank you for bringing up this issue, it needs to be discussed more and be taken serious 🙏our children are getting stuck in this virtual world without realising it can get out of control(…)

Good topic. I've played games my entire life but have a pretty healthy balance. Over the years I've seen the worst of gaming addiction up close, though, and have seen friends develop some real heart-breaking habits. I hope that over time this becomes a more open discussion, especially with the emergence of smartphones and the ability to play games at any second of your life.

My ex fiancé had a 23 year old son who was addicted to video games and she enabled him and refused to admit he had a problem and it destroyed our relationship

Thank you very much for bringing this up!!! One of my sons had a terrible addiction to gaming and was so far behind in school he had to repeat 11th grade. It started when they introduced iPads into the classroom. All of the parents complained that this was happening to their boys also. The girls were getting stuck on social media, and that was affecting how they saw themselves. I couldn’t get my husband on board about his problem. He hated that I compared it to a drug addiction. I told him to look it up online, that it affects the brain the same way, and that when he gets off he spoke very quickly and acted like he was high on cocaine. Counselors and therapists knew that to be true as well. It’s even on the list at Hazeldon Betty Ford.

Hi Cee Cee, my husband same. I dunno about yours, but I think if mine admits and agrees to our daughter having this addiction, then it might be like admitting he also has a problem, exposing his addictions :beer , gaming , collecting all things Comicon, just a theory, but Ironically, as I am typing this, he just left with my daughter to return her oculus to Best Buy because it burnt out . I told him to have a talk with her in the car obviously it burnt out for the very reason we are speaking of. He told me to “STop!!!” …. And there ya go people.

I doubt it's bad as cocaine but it's probably close to it.

My 14 yr old has ADHD, Depression ,ASD, School Refusal/Anxiety. Making friends at school, so hard. She said she feels safer in her room with her cat on her lap in her Star Wars Snuggie talking to her friends on Oculus. She has been addicted since 7 yrs old. She started on my iPhone, then hand held portable games, then desktop computer apps, then Oculus.Originally I was OK with it because it was the only way she had any friends (Roblox & Minecraft, she still has her original gaming friends today. ) Her emotional health was suffering from being ostracized in school peer groups. She doesn’t fit in in school. She comes home deflated, but the minute she hook’s up with her on line friends , she comes back to life. It’s like Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.

I am a 32 year old male and about 3 years ago i realized that i cant run from life so i am not gaming as much anymore. I now have a job and educating myself. Gaming can be amazing if done properly but it can really strangle your potential! Be careful with this shit because it can really fuck you up
