You know back in 3rd edition with typical points caps of 1,500 when a squad of tactical marines with no upgrades was 300 pts anyone could really afford the game and you didnt need a bajillion models to play a game. The move to 2,000-2,500 pt games with cheaper pts per model just blew the game up in cost, a bunch of the kids at the local store couldnt play anymore.

I played 3rd a lot back then. It was expensive already and armies still got pretty big at 1500 points. Space Marines were 15 points a model and a Rhino 50. This combined with vehicles sometimes being near indestructable lead to Rhino Spam list with at 10 Rhinos filles with Marines. A list like this was expensive back then and lets not get started on metal elite units. It is true however that the armies sizes kept growing, but there are so many more ways to get cheaper into the hobby than back in the days. Im rather sure I could get a similiar army like back in 3rd for less money now, its depends where you live of course. Not defending GWs pricing policy but I think people tend to dramatize.

@@helotaxiOkay, but lets not forget the insane cost of pewter blisters - $8-25/model (at least in the USA) and you sometimes you had to buy 10minimum of them... And that those only really started phasing out /starting/ mid/end 4th ed. My Tyranid Gargoyles cost me like $70+tax, my Old One (derpy pewter) Eye was $35, and same with the 3E xenomorph hive tyrant, and $15 for a Hive Guard, lictor was $12-15. Not horrendous, but plastic massively saved us so much money and opened the game to so many new people with the savings! Besides that one price plunge, the buying power hasn't /actually/ diminished a ton since 3E (has gotten worse since 4.5/5E), but it's becoming a full army game and not a Combat Patrol game did most of the value loss...

If you look back, Rogue Trader wasn't really designed to play the massive battles that we have today. It was designed around a more Combat Patrol sized game (i.e. Platoon level game). Even in 2nd edition the games weren't much bigger than around 2x Combat Patrol per side. At a certain point, you really have to scale down the mini's and the individual unit details to have ever increasing large games that don't take forever to play (Classic Battletech vs Alpha Strike). Even in historical gaming, it was common in large scale battles that a single mini actually represented a group of soldiers and not one dude. So a unit of 10 minis could actually represent hundreds of men and a commander mini (one figure/base) also included his entire retinue. This is probably one of the reasons that Mantic just announced an updated version of Warpath which was their 'big battle' sci-fi rule set and have stated that it will be supported with mini's that are 12-15mm scale. That way you can have epic sized battles that wouldn't take a lot of time, space, and money to be able to enjoy.

Back in 1981, GW published a sci-fi skirmish ruleset called "Spacefarers". It was a small "Classic Traveller LBB" size softback. It was really meant as a game to encourage purchase of the Citadel miniatures. We did buy some minis but we mainly just used cardboard tokens. It was meant as a squad-level game but we played many, many hours of it with some fairly large "squads" with tens of soldiers on each team (sort of up to a platoon size, I guess) and up to 4-5 teams in game. We made up our own additional rules, including weapons and equipment drawn largely from GDW's "Traveller" and FGU's "Space Opera" TTRPGs. Obviously, the former had "Striker" as its tabletop combat rules, which came out at around the same time as "Spacefarers", but we stuck with our own little hybrid system for years as it was easy to introduce players into it, and it was quick to play too.

Just setting up some marines in a dugout and throwing Orks at them to see what happens is a nice way to unwind and stretch the legs of your imagination a bit.

Combat Patrol is like Bizzaro World DBA (De Bellis Antiquitatis)! DBAmmmawut? You say. DBA was a 1990 historical miniatures game which broke all previous convetions for its type and day. In DBA ALL armies consisted of 12 bases, each with 2 to five minis on them. Each base was designated as on of a number of generic troop types, such as Knights, Blades, Pikes, Bows, Light Horse etc, etc. These troop types all had different combat values and interactions when fighting other troop types. The small number of minis meant a single army giving a slice cut an armed force from history could be represented by 12 to 50 minis. Games were fast and very tactical. Given the speed of building an army and how fast it played, you could have real time campaigns with your friends over a Saturday of gaming covering an entire war. And since the armies were cheap, fast to paint and you got a of fun out of them, you naturally painted several. Had fun with Roman heavy infantry armies? Try their more volatile glass cannon barbarian enemies! Hate your friends high medieval french knights? Get some Saracen horse archers for them to chase and get cut to pieces by! Love Romans really, really much? Get one army for each distinct epoch of their Empire! (Yes, this is the equivalent to having multiple Space Marine armies. Romans are the Space Marines of historical gaming.) The game later got an expansion where you could play with many more minis than just 12 stands, and this became on of the major tournament sets during the 1990s, but it, like Warhammer got rather bogged down with all the different options, time of play and increasingly ultra competitive player base. However, DBA was, unlike Combat Patrol, cheap as chips. Which is exactly why you're spot on - CP should be cheaper, otherwise it loses the main appeal of the format. You should be able to build sideways and explore, go every which way you want. Some minis should be able to to be used in different armies, for example. And as for the balance of CP... I believe it when I see it. DBA did this differently - the armies were not balanced. Most major powers from the same era were decently ok with each other, but there were always those who performed worse. However, this was mitigated by two factors: One was the terrain system. A major power's army usually had a higher Aggression factor than smaller ones, meaning that the worse army usually got to pick how much terrain was to be used. This was how your angry Irish late 7th century turnip throwers could engage and win against Norman colonisers on horseback. You just filled as much of the table you could with forests and bogs and ambushed hose pesky Anglos. The second factor was the campaign system which made losing players able to join forces with their conquerors and come their aid as allied forces. This meant everyone got to play multiplayer games even they lost their two player games, and when their conqueror lost a battle (sometimes because you "helped" in a very unhelpful way in those multiplayer battles), you could throw off your chains of vasselage and once more cry out for Shoes and Freedom! Anyhooo, this is what sprung into my mind when watching your video. I wish CP would be more like DBA, but I guess we'll have to settle with the timeline we're in for now. Thanks for coming to my Tedx Talk about old wargames. (Next time, why PanzerBlitz was a better game than Legiones Imperalis ever will be!)

I also feel that the boardgamers are the main target demographic for the warhammer entry products - and thats also the problem: you get a handful of miniatures just to start you off ......fror the price of a good boardgame. Oh and you have to assemble them on your own. And download and print your own rules for them. Oh and unlike boardgames there never is a solo option so your opponent going to need a box too of course. And you need some space and scenery to play. so much cheaper than boardgames and so much more convenient. Go for it.

I've got a lot of co-workers that want to get into, but don't know where to start. I kept telling them about the free rules and just to get the combat patrol boxes. I even recommended printing out full combat patrol boxes for a bottle of resin which is 34 bucks, even then people don't want to put in the work or learn. I stopped talking about 40k at work as a whole. My gf is excited to play with me, but it's really hard for her to learn/remember all the rules. It's really exhausting having to look at 2 different armies and remember every statline and abilities. I know sisters of battle, orks, necrons, and space marines by heart now tho...lol. I got 9-10 combat patrols printed out and pretty much ready to be played, even have a board with terrain, but it's really hard finding people to play with. I've decided to switch to OPR to play with my gf, since it's got less rules.

  • @weirdguy564

I was interested, then the prices came up. I'll stick to what I got. BattleTech, and BattleTech: Alpha Strike (much simpler rules, faster to play, or larger armies). You can buy the standard boxed set of the game for $60, and it includes 8 unpainted plastic mechs to field a standard 4-vs-4 game. Even better, in BattleTech it is lore accurate that every faction pretty much has every kind of mech in the original time period. So, those 8 mechs can be rearranged so each time you play you have a different set of mechs. And that is just the boxed set. You can still do what we did and make a "miniature" out of cut up card stock and a pen. Hell, the Starter boxed set only has 2 mechs in it, but has a bunch of cardstock minis, so that is normal to make your own. 3D printing your own units is also frowned on in BattleTech, but its not to the same vitriol that Warhammer players take it. BattleTech is played more for fun than anything else, so nobody cares too much about things like unpainted minis or such, or that your mini's are 3D printed ones.

  • @vilidious

For a newcomer, combat patrols are just expensive boxes full of gray unassembled plastic. If you want newbs to the game, you'd need to have a separate full collection of necessary tools and paints too... incl. f.ex. brushes, different glues, cutters, clippers, pincers, primers, paints, basing materials, varnishes, maybe even airbrush for armor heavy patrols... everything that would make starting "convenient and painless"... and at a lowish price point (and maybe lower respective "starter" quality) and in-depth how-to guides. All in one box. Modern attention span and willingness to jump through hoops isn't imo the same as it used to be, especially with whole predigested entertainment industry acting as its competition, so even if the IP is cool to ppl, the step into miniatures is a whole new Cthulhu to worship.

Combat patrol is nice, but I'd like to see this expanded upon, so you can have options. So a player gets a Combat Patrol, but then buy more minis, so they should then be able to sub out things from the combat patrol and add other things, or even just add to it. The thing is that Combat Patrol is likely going to be horrifically balanced, as some armies boxes are way better than others. I think by keeping the small size, but allowing players to field different options to what is in combat patrol boxes, it might actually be decent. I'd definitely like a more fast, paced, scaled down 40k experience, but I don't want to be limited to what comes in the starter set.

I agree that Combat Patrol is probably the best introduction for new players in the hobby at this current time but I still feel that it is a lot of money for someone just wanting to dip their toe into the hobby. From my experience, the best intro for new players into the game was the old "pocket money" packs that GW used to produce. These packs cost around £5 and were very accessible, you got 3-5 minis in a pack from different factions and were great for young players with only a pocket money budget. My son when he was 6-7 years old, used to love going to the store with me and getting new set to build/paint and play with. Over time, this evolved into buying squads and then rulebooks and by the time he was 12-14 years old he had a real interest in the game with many miniatures that didn't break the bank. Getting rid of these pocket money sets was a big mistake in my opinion.

Combat Patrol sounds like a fun alternativ. The price however is too high still. I get a box at 125€ from GW directly, which can be as few as 9 Space Marines and a Redemotor Dreadnought, which is quite extreme to be honest. While something Like the World Eaters or GSC feel more reasonable with 30+ models, you will also need Terrain, dice and Tools if you First start out. ASOIAF for example gives you a starter box with 4 units and different characters, which always comes with 50+ Infantry models (or less, but bigger cavalry and Monster Models), trays, dice, cardboard ruler and terrain, cards and rules for just 100€. And no assembly required. You decide where you get more value and Game fun for your money.

I particularly enjoyed the Morgan&Morgan skit, especially when, at the end the camera stayed on the guy with the condom his head and the power axe stuck in his a*s too long and he looked uncomfortable. That said I’ve got 20+ years of Death Guard and Nurgle Demons massed and painted ready to bring all of existence into Papa Nurgles warm embrace. My main gripe is the new editions every 15 days. Cost wise I don’t need to buy much anymore…thankfully. I get my stuff from 3rd party individuals from Asia and Eastern Europe at 1/3 the price or better…real stuff to.🤫 I do throw GW a bone on occasion. Wish a gaming nerd Billionaire would buy the company out and set things right.

Honestly, while good in theory...I just can't truly get into Combat Patrol. I felt it was too restrictive when it was purely what's in the box, meaning if you don't like the combat patrol box for the army you like (Death Guard "Oops all Poxwalkers" comes to mind) then you're SOL....then I realized it's even worse. Not only is it purely what's in the box with no customization to roster...but even the unit's loadouts are cemented in, what you want that guy to have a Flamer...to bad, your CP doesn't use flamers...even though the box has them. Personally I think if they'd gone with the Kill Team route of Here's this team right out the box, and if you get tired of that, you can swap out units and their weapon loadouts. As it stands I just couldn't see people wanting to play many games using the same thing every time and CP boxes are expensive, so it's gonna be a very niche crowd getting different armies versions instead of just expanding their army for a full game. IDK...I guess at the end of the day I just hate restrictions (actually an issue I have with 10th....leader restrictions).

I always liked smaller games. I found that 500 was a good spot for game length. The only problem was balance. Most factions could dominate with a very cheesy list. I am thinking we need a new index list for 500 points like combat patrol. Maybe 2 or 3 options for stratagems, traits and secondaries. Something like combat patrol plus. Maybe you can only have 1 of each unit with battle line being the exception. OR specific units will have this exception.

I quit playing Warhammer a month ago because I was tired of driving an hour to and from the meetup only to feel my opponent had a tailored list EVERY FU***** TIME. you had my attention with combat patrol thinking "maybe I'll get back into 40k with Combat patrol." right up until you mentioned the full turn system. FU** everything about that. Kill team is better than either one of the mentioned games. nice video though, very informative and not boring. Also love that you brought up MANTIC GAMES.
