    Oh man, Hook on SNES is a surprisingly good game. I remember getting it for Christmas and thinking "darn, why did they buy this instead of something better?" only to put the cart in and and quickly realize it was a very good game. The gameplay really made the game work. It's definitely worth playing even today.

    I bought the Genesis at launch and while I didn't hate Altered Beast, I never thought it was a good game - other than the graphics, which looks stunning at the time. But in general everything I ever heard about Altered Beast was that it was a good looking game that wasn't very good - and that was what people, my friends, what I read in magazines, all said. Not a bad pack in game, but not a system mover, and if you're going to pack in something, it should make you want to buy the system to play it. Sega did eventually figure this out with Sonic.

    Thank you Joe 🙏 it’s nice to see someone stick up for Altered Beast for a change. I never quite understood why Altered Beast gets so much hate. Game devs were working with a new system/new software I suppose, but I think the game is fine. Nothing spectacular or noteworthy really, but I don’t think it warrants the hate it receives. Also, like you Joe, my opinion may be a bit biased and might be skewed through my nostalgia goggles, as it was the first game I had for the Genesis as well. Admittedly, the game is quite primitive and there isn’t a whole lot to it, but it still plays pretty well. The whole vibe of the setting, the characters, and especially the music, gives off a sense of foreboding. I don’t ever hear anyone praise the music, so I guess I’m in the minority with my appreciation for it. I LOVE the first song. It’s amazing how much of an impact music can have on a game. But anyway, I know I’m 6 years late to this video but I’ve seen all of the newer gamesack videos :( so now I’m binging on the older ones. This channel is by far the best gaming channel! We all miss Dave, of course, but I am so glad that Joe stuck around for us! I totally understand and respect Dave’s decision to part ways so he can focus more on his family and his responsibilities, but I bet he misses you Joe! Poor guy, being an adult sucks lol. Who wants to sacrifice their fun video game channel with their buddy, for their job at UPS 💔 lol I’m sure it pains Dave deep down, but I hope he and his family are doing well! Miss you man! And Joe, I love YOU! thanks for remaining faithful and not cheating on us like Dave 😆 jk Great video by the way! 🖤

    That darkening has a nickname "actiplaque" since Activision labels are notorious for it. It has to do with the glue aging. If the lamination on the label is worn or not as thick(like less shiney when new) it usually will darken the worst. Hope that explains a little!

    A couple of things on Yoshi's Story (from memory having last played the game in...1998 or so?) - I remember the disappointment that it was more a kid's game than a sequel to Yoshi's Island. A lot of people were hoping for the latter than the former. That it was so easy was a bit of a letdown. - If you take it for what it is - a cute, happy game with fun mechanics - it's a lot better. - I think you can hit L or R or Z or something to hide the fruits - There's a bonus for collecting all of the light green melons instead of the other fruits. That's what I used to do for an added challenge.

    Milon's is a great game. It's like a mix of The New Zealand Story, Metroid, and Simon's Quest. It is hampered by frustrating controls and sloppy hit detection, though. It's also great proof that nobody reads manuals, as it clearly states that you're meant to use your bubbles to break blocks to find items. Angry Video Game Nerd single handedly made this game out to be something mind bendingly impossible and ultra confusing, when in fact all you need to do is fire bubbles at everything and rub up against every wall. It's exactly the same as what you do on Metroid, but Metroid is a huge sprawling planet whereas Milon is a handful of little rooms.

    I've been watching gamesack for at least t years. Don't know how I missed this episode, but holy crap. Shadow Blasters... I have had this memory for almost 30 years of the boss fight with the gigantic sprites, floating in space. I only played this game once when I was 8 or 9 as a weekend rental. I couldn't remember anything else about the game other than the boss fight. I've tried googling to figure out what game this is many times over the past 15 years! I'm definitely going to pick this one up and finally satisfy my nostalgia. Thanks Joe!

    The adhesive used to adhere the label to the cart is breaking down... It's weird, cause companies must switch out products during production runs cause you'll get some carts that begin to look like yours, and some that look flawless... If the cart was previously exposed to the elements, i.e. stored in an attic/storage unit or kept at a flea market etc., that can speed up the deterioration process... But yeah, I'm pretty sure that's what that is - It's happened to a few of my Genesis games...

  • @kutulukutu
    @kutulukutu6 жыл бұрын

    I think it's the adhesive that starts bleeding through the label? My Altered Beast and GREEN DOWG are in the same shape. Streets of Rage, as well. I'll eventually replace the labels, because screw people these are my games. Not sure if I'm right about the adhesive bit, but I'm totally right about screw people. And I think they redid the voices from Altered Beast because Neff sounded like the snarky guy at a... specialty bar...

    I absolutely LOVE Yoshi's Story. It may not be perfect, but dang it every time I decide to go back and play it it puts the biggest smile on my face. That and Yoshi is one of my favorite video game characters of all time. Also, I haven't heard much hate for the game, just that people wish it was like Yoshi's Island, but they still like it.

    Most guys don't want to like or be seen liking anything cute. When SMW2:Yoshi's Island was released, I remember a lot of people not liking it because of whaling baby Mario. Times have changed. Maybe nostalgia has something to do with it. They're both decent platformers, but I could take less screaming Mario, please!

    WhatsOnMyShelf exactly lol. That's one upside. Another is the boss fights to me. It had some pretty epic fights outside if maybe like one xD but pretty cool game. And the fact that there's secret yoshis was cool to me. Idk. But they are very close concept wise (island and smw2) but you're probably right about the cute thing

    I think the Yoshi's was aimed at a younger audience as well. The boss fights were not difficult and the story book presentation may have been a way to relate to younger children. It doesn't take away from the fact that the graphics were unique and it was truly a solo Yoshi platformer; something up until that time had been reserved only for Mario & Luigi (of course, Peach and Toad in SMB2).

    It might be a really subjective topic, but I think this is an excellent idea for episodes! I hope you guys do a bunch more - there are so many games that have been slandered by popular reviewers and younger players might assume are terrible, when that's not the case at all. Castlevania 2 and Zelda 2 are two of the biggest that come to mind, when in actuality they're both fantastic games, just different from and maybe not quite as good as the other entries to their series around the time of their release. I know you've talked about those in particular before but this is the kind of subject that would make it kosher to bring them up again, and many, many more along those lines, even if the point here seemed to be slightly lesser-known titles.
