anybody who has played ds3 should immediately know whats going on here. first of all the weapon is directly given to you even with a fancy pick up animation, its the serpent hunter. now you are looking at a serpent boss and you just got the serpent hunter. then the boss fight doesnt even start, the game gives you the chance to open your inventory and read the new weapon and change to it. you could not make it more obvious that youre supposed to use this weapon. i can understand people not quite understanding the yhorm fight, the weapon is hidden behind him and even when you get the weapon, you need to realize that you need to do the special move to do the big damage. whereas this serpent hunter does a lot of damage with every of its attack if you played ds3 you should immediately know whats going on here and even if you didnt play ds3, it should be obvious what to do here.

I grabbed the spear and didn't read it. It took me a few tries, but I beat him with my mimic buddy and my tanky strength boy.

Fun fact: Rykard's sword is covered in the flesh of the many heroes he devoured.

I still had trouble and upgraded the Serpent Hunter to max level before taking him on again. Even with the better damage I still thought he was hard. I love how people can have an easy time with one boss while another person has a really hard time with it; goes to show how all the different play styles and builds can alter people's experiences with the game!

personally, i summon the mimic every time just to see the Marvel of TWO Serpent Killers wailing on this poor guy. The fight is still fun regardless, it reminds me of having Siegward assist you for Yhorm in DS3

You don't need to upgrade the weapon, it's specifically there just for the serpent, and it does 2500k damage with a fully charged thrust and the follow up does another 1500k, also aim for the head when he brings it down to bite you. I only needed two tries to finish it, comparatively it's an easy main boss fight.

That "Hollow" streamer just spammed R1 the whole fight lmao

If you want to easily beat Rykard you can just hit him with a heavy attack. It stun him with the first hit and you can repeat it. Heavy attack, wait, heavy attack, wait. Makes both phases trivial and stops you from getting bombarded by the fire skulls in his 2nd phase if you have the stamina to keep hitting him and hit him fast enough after it recharges.

First dude using the ash of war attack with no FP as a “finish move” was honestly hilarious but also impressive he defeated it without the ash of war…

Dang Rykard sounded like he had a sword up his throat….oh wait.

rykard is like a mix of the snake demon from the first chapter, grunbeld with the whole dragon face thing and skull knight pulling the sword of actuation from his mouth.

My sibling wants to be a nurse, and halfway through the boss when the cutscene played, they were like “This is so gross I don’t wanna watch this” and turned around, only to turn back around a second later and say “I’m gonna be a nurse I’m gonna see grosser stuff than this” I gotta say, this boss design was probably one of the absolute best boss designs I’ve seen in gaming as a whole, not just Elden Ring or FromSoft games, but gaming as a whole And this fight was tough, looking at the damage numbers I was dealing, I was thinking “That’s so much damage” even though it was a sliver off of Rykard himself This boss will live on in my memories forever

If you go talk to the mission lady in the manor, then go back to the boss arena, the mission lady is eating the boss's body. If you hit her, she dies in one shot but then you have to fight her body guard. Good luck.

I now forgive FromSoft for the Yhorm gimmick weapon fight. This was so epic. And it actually took me a couple tries to finish the fight.

Personally I found the Heavy attack (Triangle) was much easier than Square or trying for it's special ability. The light attack is a thrust, which easily misses. The special ability has a shortish wind up but against this monster it feels like forever. Use heavy attacks. They are horizontal slashes with insane range and accuracy. They also happen in groups of 2 incase you are mashing. Best to wait for him to attack, dodge, then get two hits in. I am also not sure why all the streamers used the jump attacks. It takes much longer to kill the boss this way. Asmongold: Here comes an easy boss. Also Asmongold: Dies, attempts to fabricate several excuses that don't exist, dies again, dies a few more times, likely dies several more times off screen.

homeboy tried using the weapon art without any focus points so it didn't even work...you need FP to do the devastating L2 attack...

I totally didnt notice and ran past the serpent spear on my first try here. I was just so hyped up to beat some ass and got super mulched. XD

did the fight today, nope they didnt. shame really. earned so much money with the game and cant even get the game properly working. i had big fps drops in the gargoyle fight as well when they were spamming their poison and i have an rtx 3080.

this boss is a weird combination of Yhorm the Giant, Ludwig, and Dark eater Midir. Midir for its sheer size, damage, and high hp, Ludwig for its second phase having them wield a sword and utilize a variety of projectiles, and Yhorm for the weapon gimmick that is handed to you in order to make it a fair fight.

First playthrough I cheesed him by summoning decent level mimic tear with serpent hunter Second play through I was doing a no summons and man can this boss be brutal when you see all its moves and you’re under leveled but extremely fun to not cheese though

This and Seniordragon Placidosax are the Best Boss Fights in the Game.

God the first streamer fighting with absolutely no FP hurts my soul

This was the easiest and most underwhelming boss fight in elden ring for me because on my first playthrough, I was probably around lvl 90 SL when I reached him and all I had to do was stunlock him by spamming the weapon art.

I loved this fight to be honest. I used the spear, summoned my mimic who also used it with me, and spammed the ashes of war button for it. We staggered Rykard so many times. And then for the second phase, we didn't even break a sweat. We both kept doing it until he was dead. Poor guy swung his sword twice I think, and never activated a single spell/incantation.

Remember, you can upgrade the Great Serpent Hunting Spear. Makes the fight easier.
