Major mistake: Only the player who is being stolen from or being assassinated may attempt to block. You cannot use an Ambassador, Captain, or Contessa to block for other players. This drastically changes the game play. I made the same mistake the first few weeks I had the game myself. Hopefully no one passes on this game after seeing the play here misrepresented. To those who've not played this. With the correct rules, the game feels less random. Captains and Assassins become very powerful tools instead of something you wish you didn't have because half the table can block you. Dukes don't just run away with the game taking 3 each turn. The bluffing strategy becomes very tactical as the roles are very balanced against each other. The game is deeper than it looks, especially when played over multiple rounds to an ultimate win condition. I recommend first to 3 wins (but minimum first to 2 wins). Playing a single round can be enjoyable but in the same way as playing a single hand of poker.

I was thinking the same thing as I was watching this. Captains and Ambassadors were blocking non-stop, even when they weren't being attacked. But I don't recall any Contessa attempting to block assassination who wasn't being assassinated.

Hey, yeah... I messed up that Counteraction rule. I had been taught the game before and "knew" it already, so I only glossed over the rules before teaching it here. The original rules are rather short, and say this under the general heading of Counteractions: "Players may claim to influence any of the characters and use their abilities to counteract another player." So I when I re-read that, I took it to mean that ANY player could use their role to "defend" against any OTHER player - i,.e. 3rd party defending was okay. Alas, I didn't read the specific roles listed after that - again, because I already knew the game - but it does state under the Ambassador/Captain: "The player who is being extorted may claim either the Ambassador or the Captain and counteract to block the extortion." And while it doesn't say "ONLY the play being extorted..." I think I would have understood the meaning here had I read it. Luckily, this version of the game is not really available anymore, and, from what I understand, the new rules make this clearer.

Why is this entitled "The Resistance: Coup", when it, well, isn't? (Yes, I know, the game is being re-released under that name, but that's not the game being played, and, as stated in the discussion, it's not clear that the game will be exactly the same, so this is a misrepresentation)

I love this game, it is really easy to learn and fun to play with groups any size, really. Its crazy playing with 6, and very different playing with 3.

I find these kind of games so intriguing. I've played Resistance and Ultimate Werewolf Inquistion, I own (but have yet to play) Resistance Avalon and Ultimate Werewolf and thus know the rules to them, and am familiar with Love Letter, but I was introduced to Coup, Mascarade, and One Night Ultimate Werewolf by watching them played out on this channel. And I think this one seems like it would be my least favorite of them because the bluffing seems more like a poker strategy rather than trying to interpret the behavior of you fellow players; driven more by probability and involves less of a need to read into how other people are acting and reacting to everything going on. Mascarade seems similar to this, but involves more of a chaos factor which requires more interpretation of the actions of other players.

You draw two cards, then add the one you might wanna exchange to the hand. After that you pick one, so there's no possibility with 4 cards in hand to exchange both of your cards...

The Kickstarter one has extra cards for 6 player games like this and after watching I can see how it would help the game near the end.

If you only have one card, is there any reason to not say you have a Contessa when someone tries to assassinate you? Even if they call your bluff, it doesn't matter because you just have to turn up a card anyway right?

You could doubt the attacker actually has the assassin. If the attacker doesn't, then you don't have to show yours and you don't lose anything.

Yeah, you only have two options: 1) say you have contessa even if you don't 2) say your opponent doesn't have an assasin.
