Playing Azul wrong was a highlight of the con. Playing it correctly is a continually rewarding journey. Azul is the only game on that table that I like.

The Mind is interesting as I agree with Lincoln. Every time I love played it there was always 1 person who clearly cannot get in sync or got the timing/body language whereas everyone else was on the same page. That's completely fascinating.

Excellent discussion! I was in "high anticipation mode" for this episode. Thank you! I think that Lincoln makes some excellent points about the challenges some people have engaging with The Mind - this is not to fault the players for whom the game does not click, I know there are types of games that don't work for me. Nonetheless, it has indeed generated many moments of brilliant joy and is my favorite of the bunch. Also, some excellent points raised by Lincoln about Azul as a FAMILY game. To those points, I add the individual scoreboards that the players have (I don't trust Nana!), their small size, and the ease that marker cubes are bumped (remember that?). Also, I do wonder about how strong of a driver the positional placing of tiles in the mosaic actually is: I wonder if the scoring benefits of neighboring tiles, when added through the course of the game, actually end up being a rather random reward. I wonder ...

The Mind is ok, but for families with social issues, it tends to be too stressful. Holding eye contact is rough for some folks. Azul is my pick. Really enjoyed the video!

Awesome video. As much as I enjoy the playthroughs this special every year is always the episode I most look forward to. My guess for the KdJ for a while now has been Quacksalber, in spite of it being the one I haven't yet played. I've watched a number of playthroughs now and it looks like it hits that sweet spot between luck and strategy and is just a lot of fun. Plus a ton of replay value with the different powers on the tokens. And don't get me wrong, I love Heaven and Ale, it's one of the best games I've played in the past few years. But it's definitely too heavy to win what is really a family+ game award (and to be clear there's nothing wrong with that, obviously I'm here following and anticipating the award, and a number of the nominees are also among my favorites). I'd be shocked if it won. And I had to laugh at the Kanban comments, because that's a top 10 game for me. Heaven and Ale is interesting because from my perspective it's actually on the lighter side of my favorite games, but still definitely feels too heavy to win a KdJ. Pretty Clever on the other hand just didn't have nearly the staying power I wanted. No criticism intended to Dave, it's awesome that you've played it so much and you still really enjoy it, but for me after about ten solo plays in a 24 hour period I was just totally done with it and I felt like I'd seen everything there was to be seen. So to me it's hard to understand how it would win, but maybe that's my flawed perspective. And I mean, most of those games were fun before I got burnt out, and ten games is quite a lot more than some games I've played (Russian Railroads lasted like three plays, and those were stretched out over a much longer time period). Also, The Mind is an interesting one. I respect it a lot for creating a really interesting and unique experience, but I also sort of feel like once I've had that experience I've seen what the game has to offer and other than potentially wanting to give others that experience I don't really feel any need to revisit it. Especially if the context is the same group playing over and over I just don't see myself going back to it, and I think that's the group the award targets, a fairly static group. It definitely deserves kudos for creating that experience and I don't think there's anything quite like it, but I don't know if I could give it the award. But it would also be a lot of fun seeing a ton of people on BGG freak out if it won (and like I said, as a design I really respect it), so part of me is rooting for it. I wonder if you've ever considered doing more videos like this that are just focused on discussing games. Like I said, I definitely enjoy the playthroughs and the discussions after them, but it would also be really cool to see more videos like this where there's a lot of discussion and comparison.

I loved playing The Mind! I need to get a copy for myself. The demonstrative, nonverbal communication is a lot of fun but I also agree with Dave that playing with absolutely no communication is a blast too. Quacksalber was so much fun - the push your luck and strategic bag building mechanics played really well together. I think Lincoln just has crazy good luck with this game!! I definitely want to play this game again when the english version comes out. Thanks GameNight for the review!

I'd most certainly nominate Azul and Heaven & Ale to win. I own both games and when I ask people who are "new" to board games(Sure they've played Monopoly, Chess, Checkers, and Life) after playing what I consider gateway games(Ie Ticket to Ride, Jamaica, Royals) they've chosen either of these 2 games and loved both. I personally like both because not only are they simple to teach but they're also simple to play and are greatly done.

BoardGameGeek True enough! (I had to rewatch ;) but nevertheless that still does not rob Lincoln of sdj prophet status from the bgg show episode just before they announced the nominees on May 10... I think he called at least 6 of the games that were either nominees or on the recommended list for sdj and ksdj. I'm a Lincoln believer!

Best show about the nominations in the net. I love the discussion element. Having not played Heaven & Ale but watching the game that you guys played, it feels to me a lot like Palaces of Carrara. Clumsy Dad in that game, you also choose to place the tile for points or for money. You also decide when you wanna score your cities or building types. That what feels samey to me. The other mechanics are probably different but i just got that feeling when i watched them play.

I’m really torn between Azul and The Mind. Azul feels like the game that falls in the tradition of forever games in the mould of ticket to ride which will always be worth a game. But the mind is so wild with what it does with the people playing. I agree with Dave - it’s a co-op where you can always feel neutral about losses and great about victories. The game does need a pseudo moderator though - it needs a player to maintain the no bad feeling tone and convince everyone to buy into the magic circle. Ganz is amazing. It’s mind boggling how balanced things feel but also how it maintains momentum (constraints are the death of many roll and writes). Also I’ve finished the book playing mostly two player (the true award :))

  • @DianeMountford

When I watched their play of Quacksalber, I formed a different impression of the rat tail mechanism, which did seem a little artificial at first. But instead of a "catch up mechanism," it seems like a way that enforces consistent excellence round over round. If people start at more-or-less the same place on the spiral each round, the player who plays each round the best will win the game. Some of that is luck, of course, but I'm interested to experience it myself and see what I think.

When I started watching the DQVQ gameplay, I also thought that the “socialism” mechanic was not nice. “Socialism” mechanics negate a player’s efforts to play better. On the other hand, sometimes these mechanics are needed, and I gradually got to think that in this game this mechanic is actually well implemented. I never played the game myself and I could be wrong, but it seems to me that this game benefits a runaway player; the benefits you get from being ahead actually help you a lot to get better and better scores, and I think that the rat tails are not powerful enough to totally negate that, while keeping the players in the back still interested in playing the game all the way to the end.

  • @tiagomarques9822

And now I get to the part of the video where Dave mentions that this mechanic might indeed have been added later.
