I have the Handy Gear still! I remember thinking when I was a kid that I could play the Game Gear while taking a bath. That was my whole plan. In reality the only useful thing it had was the magnifying screen. The seals around the case were never good, so even new I wouldn’t have recommend putting it in water.

I had the Game Gear and Handy Gear when they were new. I really liked the combination, I remember playing Defenders of Oasis until the wee hours of the morning with that setup. I liked being able to throw the whole unit in my backpack and not having to worry about scratching or banging up the Game Gear. The cart storage fits perfectly if you have the game in the little translucent case it came with. At the time, weight wasn't an issue. You have to remember the time these items were brought into.

I've done a lot of GG repairs and purchases and end up with a number of those Handy Gears. Based on how beat up a lot of them are (like screen scratches, chunks out of the plastic, etc.) they may have saved a few GGs.

In case you get in any other sticky situations like that, rubbing alcohol works well as a temporary lubricant to get rubber bits unstuck. Same trick works to get rubber bicycle grips on and off easily. It evaporates and the rubber is back to being grippy again.

I had the Gameboy one, it's made for long car trips where you'd actually have a lot of ambient light but the sun would hit the screen. Worked well for camping, since it could get dropped on gravel or dirt with no issues. For a young kid in the US it was a good investment.

I had a "Handy Boy" for my OG Gameboy back in the 90s. It was actually pretty cool, it lit the screen & had an adjustable Magnifying Lens you could flip out of the way if you didn't want to use it. It also had a left & right Speaker that were pretty loud & had a Snap on Joystick & Button Raiser that worked well. It could be used with AA Batteries but also came with a Chargeable Battery Pack. I still have the Joystick part but not sure about the rest of it.

These are just about the quality level I expect from 3rd party portable game accessories. I was given so much Mad Catz junk for my GBC and GBA by well meaning family members. I ended up using exactly 1 thing, a rubber bumper case for the GBC that hardly interfered with the buttons and provided some drop protection.

I used to have a case for the original GB along those lines -- I think poking into the space for the headphone jack would help to get it out, but that does look a bit stiffer a case than what I had

I had a Handy Carry new. Exact same problem. Once the gameboy went in that thing, it never left it for a good 18 months (and by then the batteries died)...also you lose the cover which was a hinge using POPPERS as a mechanism. Whoever though coat fasteners would work well as a hinge, they were wrong.

I have a handy gear for my game gear. The game storage in the back is supposed to hold a game in its case. It will not rattle around. This is how I played my game gear my entire childhood. My parents got it after my first game gear fell off a shelf while in the canvas bag it came with and broke. I never broke another one. That case is tough.

I actually have the handy gear for Game Gear, and the extra game storage is big enough to fit the Game Gear game with the intended carry case. The clamshell case that Game Gear games usually come with is a perfect fit for the carry. These water resistant cases which add size to something like the Game Gear is suitable for children who are often prone to drinking or dropping things. I wasn't very gentle with a lot of stuff as a kid, "heavy handed" was a good way to describe it, and the Handy Gear definitely worked well for me to keep my Game Gear from breaking. Imagine being a kid who had a Game Gear, the worst thing you could do is spill your drink all over your Game Gear! The Handy Gear made it easy to discard those fears, and easy to wash off the sticky mess of sugary drinks, and if you were on the go, it made it easy to shrug of rain when playing outside. The Handy Carry... Well it was good for Gameboy, but that design felt like the manufacturer was willing to be cheaper when it came to Gameboy. Nintendo was known for making their systems far more resilient than the competition.

I got a Handy Gear for Christmas one year. I was kind of confused as a child what the point of it really was. Most of the time I spent on the Game Gear was in the backseat of the car on the way to grandma's. Normally I'd bring a case that could also hold the battery pack, a/c unit, and super wide gear (as well as 4 or 5 games). I guess for a short trip the Handy Gear could have replaced me needing to bring the case? If all you wanted was to play no more than a couple of games and were ok with whatever battery life your batteries would get you...the Handy Gear did an alright job of protecting the Game Gear and the buttons worked just fine even though they didn't feel anywhere near as good as pushing the buttons directly on the actual Game Gear. I think this came with me on 2 or 3 car rides tops before I stopped using it completely. The built in magnifying glass was kind of cool, but not with the bulk of the entire Handy Gear that came with it.

I have something very similar to the Handy Carry. It's got no screen cover and no sign of it ever having one, no markings on it, and it's really solid and fits really well. Any ideas what it could be? That Handy Gear is awesome! A game in the case would fit securely in that space.

my cousin had the handy carry case when we were little. it used to be much more flexible and fit pretty well from what i remember. i think it also used to catch lint all the time so it looked kinda gross unless his parents cleaned it. he dropped that shit all the time and the case kept it safe so i guess it did its job. i just was careful with mine lol
