I stick a thin tweezers under the large center part toward whichever side I'm heating and then pull it up gently while the solder is molten, eventually it breaks free and then I do pretty much the same as you for the second side. For cleaning inside I always use a fiberglass pen and it works quite well.
Unfortunately - it's not easy...
