Theory seems fine enough, though one thing I will mention is that the "comes another" line is most likely not warning about another nihilanth rather it's probably just a taunt by the creature. Throughout the chapter you see multiple corpses of previous subjects who dared to step foot into xen and never made it back. So "comes another" isn't about another nihilanth rather another subject who dares to enter xen.

The G Man could also be one of the grubs. If you read over Episle 3 (The short story that was meant to be the original story of Half life 3) and the writers tweets from "Breen Grub" they detail that the grubs, also known as the advisers were not originally combine. They were a race called the shu'ulathois and have incredible psychic ability. They are supposed to be able to take whatever form they wish when they hatch but the combine control and keep them in the larval stage. The G Man could be a hatched shu'ulathois.

Kinda, the manual for one of the games give some dates to imply that it's his first day but other aspects of the games retcon it (like hl2)

i think it's interesting that Marc Laidlaw said that the Nilianths predecessors have been captured by the combine, and if Mat is correct about this theory, then it shows that the Gman was captured by the combine in HL:A, neat little detail, since they were already working on the story for HL:A 2 years previous

How the hell does the words of the creator of the game become a theory?

The Nihilanth theory definitely makes sense now, as the Nihilanth warns Gordon about the G-Man throughout his visit to Xen, as if he knows exactly what the G-Man is. It's easy to assume that the Nihilanth knows the G-Man is simply just another alien, but the Nihilanth seemed to know EXACTLY who he is. They could even be related.

“The G-Man is actually voiced by the same actor as the Nihilanth Boss”. What about Barney Calhoun, he’s voiced by Micheal Shapiro. You telling me he’s a Nihilanth too!

Maybe he is the 3rd one? He was able to fit in with the combine. Maybe the 1st one was the hostile one, middle one is the Gman who is mysterious and likes to be the Chessmaster to change the world the way he wants. And Barney sometimes is sudden and feels like he just appears sometimes. He is the silly one tho who doesn't like about Gman playing around and probably appears there where Gman has been causing trouble. Seriously tho, when you played through half life 2, didn't you feel sometimes that Barney just appears? Gman wakes you up and suddenly he is disguised as combine to let you get trough. Sounds odd to me

My theory was and still remains the same. Gman is actually a metegame concept. He is beyond the world of half life and he is employed to "nudge" things in a peculiar way. His employers? None other than the game developers themselves who use the gman to nudge the game in the way they want. In other words, the gman is nothing more than an embassador of the game developers, of the "true world" inside the game itself. This is why he is omnipowerful, but at the same time he answer to someone above.

Further supporting Gman is not man: He is clearly not used to his human form. Even in HL2, he has odd jerky movements for everything that he does. His speech pattern is unique because he's used to conveying through telepathy and not speaking out loud. He took on a disguise as a human to hide his true form to you, so that you'd be more likely to trust him rather than his true form. And existing in a bipedal form and speaking to you through vocal cords is, pun intended, an alien concept to him.

Dont let matt make a new theory about this series. He got this one wrong and So many other lore videos that it would be terrible for this game. Here is evidence of all of the problems in this video. 1: it is not Gordon Freeman's first day. That statement is wrong on so many levels. 1.a: the security gaurd says he is late again. 1.b: why would a government facility allow a new hire to handle highly secretive and dangerous materials. 2: the vortigaunts dont control time they have a link with the nihillanth in which they share a mind. The link is broken which explains why they dont attack you. They dont see you as a threat. 3: there is no evidence that shows the nihlanth and gman are connected except the portals they control are similar. But if they are the same species based off of that alone. Then humans are related to the nihilanth. There is much more but i dont have time

Who else would this be referring to? At this point in the series, there are no real special characters except for the G-Man. Then there is the point that the Nihilanth looks like a human fetus and the G-Man has a human appearence. The word Nihilanth literally means not man and that fits so well with the Nihilanth's description of the G-Man. He calls him Nihilanth. And lastly there's the point that the G-Man seems to always be staightening his tie. Although it is always straight? Anyway that is the place where most Xen creatures have their 3rd arm. Now to the second one. If the vortigaunts only had their powers because they were linked to the Nihilanth, then why were they able to still use their powers more than 20 years after the Nihilanth's death?

And then of course is the voice actor thing. The Nihilanth and the G-Man are both voiced by Michael Shapiro. Who returned for Half-Life: Alyx by the way. The developers were a bit worried he wouldn't know how to do him anymore after more than 10 years but he did it right immediately. Also the tie staightening thing you mentioned because it's an old game, that does not contradict the theory. That would be technical limitations. And technical limitations don't have anything to do with lore.

Where is your evidence to support your claim that it is Gordon Freeman's first day on the job? Considering that so many of the black Mesa personnel seemed very familiar with Gordon, I would think that it is most certainly not his first day.

That is Matt. His writers are really bad at this. Lore is just not this channels strong point. From Sans is Ness to The Hollow Knight is The Pale King's reincarnation, no matter what all lore videos are just terrible. @@RandomCatWithStick because he gets the lore wrong of every game. If he cant do that than just stop. People have crticized him for his stupidity and he just doubles down. He says it is just a theory because he knows he can fall back on that. Then his fans take what he says and thinks it is fact because his earlier content was about science and he mostly got that right. There are few exceptions, if any, where he got his science videos are wrong. His fans think he can never do wrong and that he is always right because of his past. He built this channel for science but switched it when his fnaf series got popular. He always looked at that and thought it was because he was great at understanding the lore (which only got worse because Scott Cawthon congratulated him for that) when in fact it was because it was a popular series. He needs to go back to where his channel started. A place where he was showing the science of videogames and a place not filled by videos wanting to get high views and lots of money. And honestly his older videos were actually educational and the reason i got into science in the first place. It would be better for everyone if he just goes back to the early days.

Freeman didn't start a 'new job'. It wasn't his first day. The game doesn't make clear for how long Gordon has been working at Black Mesa, but it does make it clear, through many dialogues and interactions with NPCs throughout the game, that he's already a well known figure there.

We know for a fact Gordon worked at Black Mesa before the resonance cascade since in Opposing Force we can find an 'employee of the month' picture with Gordon's face on it, also in half life 2 episode 1 Alyx tells Gordon the following "I heard a story about you and vents Gordon, that whenever Doctor Kleiner locked himself out of his office, you and Barney would race through the vents to get inside and unlock it." and because of what Alyx said we know for sure that Gordon worked at Black Mesa before the resonance cascade. I believe it is treated as a first day because he got tasked with pushing the crystal into the machine. So that may leqd people to believe that it was his first day on the job at Black Mesa, when in reality it was the first day for that specific project.

I dont get it. Why does everyone say it was Gordons first day because at one area in HL2 alyx talks about how you and barney used to see who could get into dr. kliner’s (spelled wrong) lab first at black mesa which implys he has worked there before the events of HL1

I thought the Gman only did that for alyx to set in motion his plans that needed Eli alive since Eli and Gman had once spoken before and had some history. And that Alyx just opened gmans prison that was held captive by the the combine.

I've always though that the G-Man had something to do with Xen. I remember saying to my brother that maybe the G-Man was the leader of Xen, until he said that the Xen leader was killed. But now that I've seen this I can now tell him about the ''Comes Another'' And also bring up that fact that the Nihilanth talks like G-Man too. Like the weird speech that the G-Man has is the same as the Nihilanth when it said ''You are man, he is not man. For you he waits. For you.''

Ik this video came out a long time ago but if G-man was a Nihilanth I'm wondering why he would be happy after he gained possession of Xen when members of his species were already there

another thing worth mentioning is if g-man is every used in mods and you hit him with a crowbar green blood comes out of him just like the creatures from xen rather than red blood compared to when you hit a solider or assassin with your crowbar

Not a bad shake but heres what I don’t get, the nihilanth is for sure also enslaved, the 3rd arm is clearly attached after the fact and is some sort of physical manipulation of it (you can see it stitched in the skin) it also has black cuffs on its 3 arms, like the vortigaunts having the green cuffs. Nihilanth also has a line that suggests he is the last and is captured. With that in mind though the gman and the nihilanth could be from the same place and gman was the one using the nihilanth.

Combines defeated earth in 7 hours *turns Half Life 2 on* the first thing what combine does is to throw a grenade and accidentally kill 3 of his colleagues

I kind of hate how everyone is nit-picking this vid years later because it isn't Gordon's first day and the fact that he linked gman to the nihilanth using Micheal Shapiro. Sure he messed up one minor fact, and he had other points besides the same voice actor=same person. I actually think this is a pretty solid game theory and would also love to see another half life theory in the near future.

All the evidence is proving, except for one detail. You forgot when the Nihilanth says "Comes another..." He says it right when Gordon enters Xen. He could just be referring to another human entering Xen, since we see other humans in HEV Suits throughout the dimension. Other than that, clean-cut!

MatPat, you were talking about how Marc Laidlaw said that other Nihilanths were captured in the past... In the new leaked plot to Half Life 2 Episode 3, Marc talks about how Dr. Breen, after death, had his mind transferred into the body of a giant slug-like creature. This was done to him by the Combine. It is very plausible then that when Marc said their were other Nihilanths previously "captured" that he meant a Nihilanth had his mind transferred into a new body by the combine, only in this case, instead of being put into a giant slug body, a more humanoid, possibly combine body. This would make sense since a combine being that *could* teleport would be a powerful asset to them. When doctor Breen was put into the giant slug, he said he preferred death to living in that form, it was probably painful. If a Nihilanth went through the same thing and then escaped, of course he would be an enemy of the combine and of course he would want revenge! He was their experiment and they would want to get him back! If he wanted revenge, it would make sense calling them to earth and forming alliances with earthlings like Gordon. It could be him preparing for war against them as payback. Another thing that supports this theory is real-life phantom limb syndrome, in which a patient that has lost a limb would still feel that limb. When you see the G-man always touching his tie/chest area, it could be Phantom limb syndrome due to him no longer having his third arm.... But hey that's just a theory! Thanks for reading!

Breen is turned to a grub, and while I like the idea of a nihilanth getting his conscience moved into a different body, the true combine aren't very humanoid at all. The only true combine we see that aren't human/transhuman are the advisors, and they're giant beans essentially. I'm glad this has at least people talking about half life again though.
