Game Show Cheats & Scandals

These are the three fascinating stories of the biggest scandals in TV game show history.
Perhaps the most famous game show cheat: Charles Ingram aka the Coughing Major, along with his wife Diana and fellow contestant, Tecwen Whittock, who came up with a plan to win Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
Let's throw it back to the 1950s, when game shows and quiz shows first became popular. Shows like Dotto, $64,000 Question and Twenty-One dominated the ratings, but turns out the shows were rigged. Contestants like Herb Stempel and Charles Van Doren were cast almost like actors by the producers to play their roles to keep sponsors happy. So how did it all get exposed?
Finally, Michael Larson, whose ingenious plan left Press Your Luck host, contestants, audience and producers completely astounded. Find out how he hacked the system to outsmart 1980s hit show.

Actually (glasses pushed up) nobody in the studio thought he was cheating. There was a documentary about this some years back, and I’ve also had the good fortune to meet and work with actual network executives who were there when it happened. The idea that somebody might memorize the patterns had been brought up when the series was in development, and the concern was always dismissed with a “Pfft, what are the odds of THAT happening?” In that studio, while he was doing what he did, the reaction in the control room was closer to “Oh shit, he’s done it.” They knew immediately.

Yeah as a huge game show fan it always bothers me when people say he cheated. Even calling a scandal seems like a falsehood. I mean sure the producers were shocked but it wasn't in disgust but shock of he he was able to notice the pattern and use it. This was concerning as they felt like he could have cheated but figured out he just studied the pattern so much that he could use it to win a huge prize. I'm pretty sure that after this they changed the pattern to be a lot more random so it showed that he really just exposed a flaw in the show and wasn't cheating.

The fact they only had 5 different patterns back then, I'm kind of surprising somebody didn't do this sooner. I did read that after this happened with Larson, they did replace the 5 original patterns with 5 new ones (most likely as a temp measure to throw anybody that tried it after his episode's airing). Then in August 1984, it was further reprogrammed with 32 different patterns, which would be pretty much impossible to cheat that unless somebody had a photographic memory. For modern versions of Press Your Luck being done today, I could see some additional patterns being used, with the possibility of it randomly switching between multiple patterns on the fly, making it pretty random for anybody that tried and next to impossible to memorize. This is just a guess, I have no evidence of this.

It was rare enough that many seasons didn't feature a top prize winner so it is even possible a single win in a season is partially covered by insurance. This also means that anyone that does win is going to be looked at very carefully because we all know insurance companies do not like to pay.

@@jeremywj their policy actually paid out up to 5 million. The insurance company paid all prizes of 500k and 1 million. The deductible on this policy is/was also 1.5 million, so the show still had to pay out a HUGE deductible. The ins company ended up suing the show because they said the questions were too easy so too many people were winning and they were losing too much money. Not sure when that was or the outcome, though. So I'm sure that means they're using a different company now and a, as a result, a different policy.

People have criticized Drew for underselling it, but, to be honest, I can't blame him, because in all the years before that, no one, but no one, got a Showcase bid exact (many have gotten one-bids exactly right, and some have gotten small prize guesses in pricing games exactly right, but no one did it with a Showcase up until then).

In light of the quiz show scandals, networks not only implemented a policing system called "Standards and Practices" to ensure that no cheating is being done, and that the games are kept fair and random. They also implemented limits on how many times or days a contestant can be on a show, how much money they can win or both. NBC limited the amount of days or times they can be on a show. ABC limited the amount of times or days to five and implemented a limit on winnings like: 1972- $20,000 and 1982- $50,000. CBS implemented several limits on winnings seen here: 1972-1978: $25,000 1978-1982: $25,000-$35,000 1982-1984: $25,000-$50,000 1984-1986: $50,000-$75,000* (* denotes hard cap on winnings being implemented after Michael Larson took CBS and "Press Your Luck" for $110,237) Also starting on top of the $50,000-$75,000* they put limits on how many times a player can be on a show usually five days with "Body Language" imposing a six day limit. 1986-1992: $75,000-$100,000* 1992-2006: $125,000* Since 2006 there is no limit on winnings.
