"A lion does not concern himself with the opinions of a sheep" Whenever I hear the Rains of Castemere, I can't help but think about Tywin. I don't know if you know the backstory of this ballad, but it actually is about Tywin; a House (I don't remember the name) was trying to slowly overthrow the Lannisters, but Tywin's father, Tytos, was too weak to react, so Tywin put together a little army and killed every member of that family in the Castle of Castamere

"Lord Tywin did not suffer disloyalty in his vassals. He had extinguished the proud Reynes of Castamere and the ancient Tarbecks of Tarbeck Hall root and branch when he was still half a boy. The singers had even made a rather gloomy song of it. Some years later, when Lord Farman of Faircastle grew truculent, Lord Tywin sent an envoy bearing a lute instead of a letter. But once he’d heard “The Rains of Castamere” echoing through his hall, Lord Farman gave no further trouble." G.R.R. Martin, ASoS

When Catelyn, Robb and his wife were killed in the Red wedding due to Tywin and Walder's scheme, this song was played. When Joffrey died in the Purple wedding, this song was played. When Tywin was killed by his own son, this song was played. When Walder Frey and all his men were killed, this song was played. I like how the ones who wronged others, the song came full circle for them.

For me, this version represents the essence of the Lannisters. From their start, the climb for the power and their fall. 0:00-1:13. The Start. Calm and subtle, slowly rising to respect and recognition. You could say that this was when Lann, the Clever began to give the first steps to grandiosity. 1:37-2:30 This part is about Tywin. His journey to make House Lannister great after his father's stupid decisions until his fall. From the destruction of House Reyne until his death by the hands of Tyrion. 2:35-3:35. It's about Cersei and Jaime. Cersei's madness destroying everything in her way, until she and Jaime leave the world, just like they came, together. Brilliant version. When I read the Red Wedding chapter in Storm of Swords, I'll hear this.

I am amending my initial reply. I propose this new interpretation: First part - a more subtle performance, still imposing respect and projecting the power of Lannister. It talks about defiance, disloyalty and rivalry. I wouldn't associate it to Tywin as much as Tyrion. Tyrion was the small man with "a very large shadow", and he knew how to defeat those who tried to outrun him. Second part - an evolution in power. It has strength, it is firm. It starts off at the part talking about pride. It is representing the continuation of the legacy of Tywin Lannister and the fight against those who dare defy the family. The second part represents Jaime and his contribution to the Lannister legacy. Third part - an all-out storm. Very strong performance. All references to honor and pride have been left out. It starts off at the "aftermath". After Lannister has had his revenge, where all that's left of the Lord of Castamere are his words and his halls are rained on in ruin. It shows what the blind fury and the madness of revenge have brought: complete destruction. All those who hurt the Lannisters will pay the capital price, no matter the cost. This is, indeed, Cersei's part. Do with this as you will.

Imagine being such a powerful family that all of Westeroes feared and knew the meaning behind the song “The Rains of Castamere”. Robb was still a child during the Red Wedding and so that’s probably why he couldn’t recognise the song.

THANK YOU! I am reading through all these comments that are completely missing the point. This song is TRAGIC! It is the story of not 1, but 2 great houses of the Westerlands, COMPLETELY eliminated by the ruthless Tywin Lannister. I do mean completely as well - one of the houses of the rebellion hid in their mines, knowing Tywin couldn't attack them in the mines. What he DIDN'T calculate was Tywin sealing the entrances, ordering a nearby river dammed and re-routed, and having the entire family drowned as the river leaked into the mines and steadily fill until every single person within drowned. That is what this song is. A cold reminder of the danger of crossing paths with the Golden Lions of House Lannister.

When...? In the War of the Five Kings there were 5 SEPARATE factions, all of them jockeying for position with each other. They weren't all united in fear against Tywin, Tywin actually had to make alliances with a bunch of other factions (Frey, Bolton, Tyrell) just to avoid getting curb-stomped by a 15 year old boy. If you look at his actual history Tywin is a pretty average military commander, losing more battles than he wins and using subterfuge to win wars. Don't get me wrong, that's certainly an impressive feat, but it's hardly the sort of thing that inspires fear in your enemies, as evidenced by so many other factions constantly attacking the Lannisters when they weren't bolstered by support from other great houses.
