@@hrudayaranjansahoo2781 Maybe consistency is overrated. :) Take another genius, Ivanchuk: he doesn't always play like a genius, but when he does he can make even Kasparov look like an 1800. And those games will still be enjoyable a hundred years from now.

@@crazymulgogi I don't think consistency is overrated. :). Just because someone played a few games brilliantly, it does not mean that the person is better than the rest. Since every chess game is a new one, what matters is how one player can think "good" for a longer duration of time in his / her career. It can easily take a small "slip of mind" to lose track of a tactic and, as Rubinstein once said, "A brilliancy is achieved only if your opponent makes a mistake". Taking Ivanchuk as an example, he is a great player -- no doubt. But Kasparov was able to perform better for a really long time. Sure he lost to Ivanchuk a few times, but since he was consistent in winning matches, he was the world champion.

But let me just tell you this: everybody loves Ivanchuk, while few people love Kasparov.. a legendary player whose games are still studied, but not the only one who counts. It's great to be on top consistently, but let's not forget that the world of chess needs all those other personalities, the numbers two, three and so on, just as much as the number one. You can't be the number one unless the rest keeps playing and trying to take you down. There are no winners without losers. In the end, chess is about ideas and creativity. An exciting draw is better than a boring win.

Saw this game in snippets(Qg6 etc) in various social media but was waiting for your analysis to watch it fully and I must say it didn't disappoint!! Thanks Dan, you the man

Totally agree. I've watched Daniel since he was involved with the TV team that covered the Short vs Kasparov match in the early 90s and he's been my favourite analyst/commentator ever since.

Daniel is a very special player. After Magnus, I always follow his games. I hope he wins a big tournament soon and get recognized for his brilliancy and new ideas. And also being brave to try them at this level.

Beautiful game

Great master class in the Italian, seemingly the opening of the moment, from Dubov. Definitely an opening that needs more consideration on my part I should think.. Interesting how Karijakin played castles King side anyway, despite your warnings of the danger of the knight being pinned. h3 and Kh2 were certainly a stroke of genius as well. All of the games covered so far would certainly be a worthy selection for game of the year.

It’s a great game and my pick for the top of the year. Although I was worried when KZread suggested a video to me with a sensational title. I hate it when I get faked out with checkbait.

"Karjakin, not a bad opponent". Understatement of the year! In fact, to produce this jewel against a strong positional player, endgame technician and defender like Karjakin (whose nickname is "Minister of Defence") is nearly impossible. Nearly, that is.

Grandiose game by Dubov. You should see him on a high bar! What an athlete!!!! What a chess player!!! No wonder Carlsen picked him up as his second.... Also, Dubov has got a great sense of humor and Russian media loves to interview him as he has funny stories and observations to tell about the top GM's of the world....

"The computer reckons black is okay" (6:25) It looks to me as one of these positions where Alphazero defeats stockfish. Curious which colour Alphazero or some other AI would pick

6 ' "The computer thinks that Black is fine". Wow! At a furtive glance Black's position just looks horrendously bad, even resignable. Hard to imagine that a GM like Karjakin, one of the strongest players in the world, could have ended up in such a mess in the early middle game. Amazing stuff!

2:19 computers do in fact approve. You just need to have a computer with strong processors that can analyze very deep into the lines. Pro chess players in the Elite like Dubov have these kind of computers

Black's bishop in b6 was very passive and away from the king. Can it be a good idea to play the black dark square bishop to Be7 in the opening?

dubov is hands down the nezhmetdinov of this era

i think Bf6 was preparition since Qe8 and 0-0 are very human moves and he defenitely looked at it but Qg6 was an over the board fibd since he already played some small inaccuracies before Qg6

Such slander against the Møller Attack! I agree that it isn’t very good if Black knows what he’s doing, but Black does need to walk a bit of a tightrope, so it scores quite well for White until about 2000 opposition.

Karjakin needed to win the game in order to win the tournament right? This is probably why he didn't play Qd6. He probably saw that it was a clear draw at best (and most possibly) so he decided to complicate the game

Karjakin is an objective player and I don't think that had any bearing on his decision-making in the game. A draw would have given him shared first. I just think he was completely discombobulated by Dubov's play.

In his interview Dubov said that the idea is Andrey Skvortsov (not sure who that is), and that Skvortsov played it against Anand.
