My guess it derives from the name "Herbert", which is often shortened to its diminutive form "Herb". Since Herbert is a kinda out-of-fashion name by the time Dan was coming of age (the Eighties and Nineties), anyone growing up in that era with that name would undoubtedly be seen as having a dorky name. It also helps few, if any (definitely none that I know of offhand), English dialects from the US pronounce "herb", as in "herbs and spices", with the H not being silent.

This is the first I've heard of this! After some research... this is weird. I find it hard to believe they got divorced just over something like that. There must've been something else, too, right? Maybe they just weren't really "in love" anymore? Maybe their romance died down to a friendship? It's just... somewhat of a small thing to base such a big decision on (at least, it seems small to me).
